Workshop Tuesday February 9, 2021 Wendy Frieden, Instructor The Seminole and Miccosukee Indians, living in isolated areas of the Florida swamps, began using hand cranked machines obtained from traders in the 10’s. As early as the 120’s, these people used horizontal bands of simple patchwork in their . This workshop will introduce the techniques used for Seminole Patchwork. By sewing strips together, cross cutting and sewing the slices back together in offset patterns, beautiful geometric designs are created. These designs appear intricate and difficult, but they are much simpler than they look! Bands can be created with narrow pieces to create accent strips or scaled larger to fill a border or an entire quilt. In this virtual workshop, I will teach the three Seminole Patchwork patterns shown to the left in the 20” x 20” sample. This can be used for a throw pillow, wall hanging or center of a medallion quilt. A print fabric with coordinating solids/blenders would look great!

If time allows, we will also discuss the two additional Patchwork Patterns in this 20” x 2” Rainbow wall hanging.

Purchase of a Seminole Patchwork book is strongly recommended for this course. Written instructions will be provided for only the three Seminole Designs in the workshop sample. Books or your own imagination will be required for additional designs. Any book on the topic from your collection or the library will illustrate dozens of different patterns which can be created. Two books I recommend: Basic Seminole Patchwork by Cheryl Greider Bradkin Includes 56 small scale designs (available new & used on Amazon) Simply Seminole by Dorothy Hanisko Larger designs for quilt tops (available used on Amazon)
