O the An excellent catechesis tool to celebrate the Advent and Christmas season P with your family is with the popular tradition of the Jesse Tree. The Jesse Tree is a special tree (usually an actual tree, or a paper tree) that visually Jesse Tree recreates the genealogy of Jesus as presented in the Catholic Bible, beginning with Adam and Eve from Genesis through to the birth of the Baby Jesus in Bethlehem. Each ancestor of Jesus featured on the Jesse Tree plays an important role in Salvation History and is represented by a symbol that allows that ancestor to be easily recognized. For example, Jacob is represented with a ladder ornament that recalls the story of Jacob’s vision of a ladder descending from heaven to earth. The symbol is featured as an ornament that hangs on the Jesse Tree. This is a great way for kids to learn their Bible stories and to help them understand how important every individual is and how they each have a role to play in Salvation History. The Jesse Tree takes its creativity from well-known verses in the Catholic Bible. Although Jesse Trees are a fun activity that can be completed all at one time, many families also use the Jesse Tree as a type of Advent Calendar to count down the days of December until Christmas. The Jesse Tree ornaments are usually hung from bottom to top as Christmas approaches. Each day of the Advent season kids can learn a different Bible story involving the ancestors of Jesus, and it’s an excellent way to keep them focused on Christ and the joyful anticipation of the Advent season. Encourage children to study the symbols depicted on each ornament, and then read together the related Bible passage. As we move through the four weeks of Advent, the Jesse Tree helps us to see clearly through the ages God’s incredible plan to send Jesus as our Savior. Check our Facebook page daily to see the different ornaments on Fr. Marc’s Jesse Tree along with corresponding Scriptures and prayers!

Who did you come to see? A versionGospel of this question is posedMeditation by Jesus many times in the Gospels. He asks it of Andrew and John when they begin to follow him. He asks it of Mary Magdalene in the garden of the resurrection. He asks it in today’s . “What did you go out to the desert to see?” There is something innately human about “seeing.” Animals have eyes — some with much more powerful vision than our own — but that’s not the kind of seeing Jesus is talking about. We could phrase the question several other ways. “What are you looking for?” “What are you longing for?” “Whom do you seek?”

It is in seeing for ourselves that our suspicions or hypotheses are confirmed, that our desires discover their fulfillment, and that we can rest for a moment in certainty. John the Baptist sought certainty of Jesus’ identity. “Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?” Jesus sends word to him based on the testimony of sight, observations of the mighty deeds Jesus has begun to work. “Go and tell John what you hear and see.”

God recognizes our desire to see. In the Incarnation, the Word is made flesh. The invisible is made visible. The supernatural is made manifest in an infant who can do little more than the most natural of movements as he feeds, cries, sleeps. We don’t need to wait for Christmas to see God. The work of God is all around us. Those blinded by sin “regain their sight.” People overcome backgrounds of poverty and violence to make world-changing contributions. Addicts grow and heal. Truth is spoken, and people listen. Let’s pray for the grace to see God’s movement in our lives this week. How have you seen the work of God?
