Bloomsbury Corridor – Northern section to Tavistock Square

The northern section of the Bloomsbury Corridor is the area bounded to the north by Euston Road, and extends south to . It includes Upper , Tavistock Square and Woburn Place. The area is used heavily by cyclists, buses, and general traffic. This part of the Bloomsbury Corridor is largely car dominated.

Issues along this section of the corridor are:

Pedestrians • 9 pedestrians have been injured in the last 3 years trying to cross the road in this section of the corridor • Most of the pedestrian crossings are confusing and cluttered • Narrow pavements, especially at Tavistock Square, and wide vehicle lanes at junctions make the pedestrian environment difficult and unattractive

Bloomsbury Corridor today and the proposed impr o Northern section: Euston Road to Tavistock Square The current layout of the streets and public spaces in the Bloomsbury corridor could be improved. Below we highlight the current issues in the Bloomsbury Corridor between Euston Road and TavistockS

The northbound bus stop is located 50 metres south of the junction of Upper Woburn Place/Euston Road. This creates congestion and difficulties for all users moving around this section. We are proposing to relocate the bus stop from opposite No.16 Upper Woburn Place to a new location further south (outside Cora Hotel).

The current road layout north of Tavistock Square is The northbound bus stop – looking confusing and raises safety issues. A large number of south pedestrians cross Upper Woburn Place, especially opposite Woburn Walk, where there is no pedestrian crossing facility. We are proposing to install a zebra crossing opposite Woburn Walk and provide a widened footway and parking bays outside Endsleigh Court.

The zebra located at is very close to the trees and the junction with Tavistock Square, making it difficult for drivers to clearly see the crossing. Zebra crossing outside Tavistock We are proposing to relocate the existing zebra House crossing 5 metres north of its current location to improve safety. 21625 B Corridor Combined 3/7/08 08:55 Page 3

Cycling • Segregated cycle lanes along Tavistock Place have resulted in a significant increase in cycle traffic • The segregated cycle lane along Tavistock Square reduces pavement width for pedestrians • Several of the junctions place cyclists at a disadvantage in comparison to other traffic • 13 cyclists have been injured on Upper Woburn Place in the last 3 years

Public Transport • The bus stop at the north west corner of Upper Woburn Place adds to traffic congestion

kSquare and describe our proposals:

At the junction of Tavistock Square/Tavistock Place/ Woburn Place there are pedestrian and cycle safety issues and there have been several incidents. We propose to modify this junction to provide pedestrians with more footway space and add advanced cycle stop lines (safe areas for cyclists to wait in front of general traffic at junctions). Tavistock Square/Tavistock Place/ Woburn Place junction looking south Woburn Place is particularly dangerous for cyclists, with safety concerns raised about the taxi rank located in the centre of the road. There is also a lack of pedestrian crossing facilities in this area. We propose to widen the bus lane at Woburn Place to 4.5 metres to provide more space for cyclists going south from Tavistock Square to Russell Square. We also propose to remove the taxi rank to reduce any potential conflicts and install a pedestrian zebra crossing (additional Woburn Place looking south space for taxis will be provided in Russell Square. 21625 B Corridor Combined 3/7/08 08:55 Page 4 21625 B Corridor Combined 3/7/08 08:55 Page 5
