INTRODUCTION Nature of the Problem and its Setting In 1953, when the Land Reform was launched, the Bolivian Government proceeded to transform agriculture from traditional to modern forms and methods. Although initially a change in land tenure arrangements, the Land Reform was intended to have far-reaching effects upon productive aspects of agriculture. Since inception of the reform, increased agricultural production, both to improve farmers' standard of living and to reduce the deficit in the balance of payments, has been one of the main concerns of the National Government in establishing policies for development of agri­ culture. A recent study (Clark 1968) has shown that any decrease in pro­ duction after 1953, especially in the supply reaching the cities, was not a direct result of the changes in land tenure effected by the Land Reform. Some reductions in agricultural supply were inevitable consequences of a popular Revolution (of which Land Reform was only one component) whose major aim was to destroy the minority-based power structure and to create a more broadly based government (Clark 1970, pp. 52-53). Within Government, both before and after the reform, there has existed the conviction that a necessary Ingredient of agricultural development is a strong program of research and extension. This conviction stemmed from the realization of very low levels of education and technology within the agricultural sector. Policies were not always enacted in accordance with 2 that conviction mainly because of budgetary constraints. However, in recent years, renewed emphasis has been placed upon research and exten­ sion work revolving around the Experimental Stations. In the high plateau region, known as the Altiplano, the Ministry of Agriculture maintains three experimental stations: Belén, by Lake Titi- kaka; Patacamaya, at the southern edge of the Department of La Paz; and Chinoli, in the Department of Potosl. The Experimental Station of Pataca­ maya, founded in 1958, has received a larger share of support and is viewed by the National Government as a pilot project in testing the role an ex­ perimental station can play in the development of the surrounding area. Although founded as an Experimental Station primarily for the improve­ ment of sheep, Patacamaya has also been quite successful in crop improve­ ments. Research in potato, quinua and forages has already yielded con- eiderable increases in production. Recent informal experiences with gladiola and some vegetables seem to open new possibilities. And, of course, there is continuous work being done in improving sheep through cross-breeding with imported animals and through better feeding and management. Formal extension activities by the Station began in 1963. In 1966, the Development Area of Patacamaya was established and the cooperative firm was chosen as the framework within which extension work would pro­ ceed. Apparently, the activities and results of the Experimental Station are largely responsible for the new drive for progress which is quite noticeable throughout most of the Development Area. 3 Given the experience accumulated so far and the planning being done for

Introduction: The Tacana In the mid 1980s, a time of redemocratization and structural adjustment policies in Bolivia, consultations about a region suitable for field research on the situation of indigenous peoples in the context of “Amazonian development” led me to the Province of Iturralde in the lowland north of the Department of La Paz (Figure 1). The culture of its indigenous inhabitants, the Tacana,1 had been documented by German researchers in the early 1950s (Hissink & Hahn 1961; 1984). Also, under the motto La Marcha al Norte, the region was the focus of large infrastructure and agro industrial projects which had already stimulated spontaneous colonization, but local people had little information about these activities nor support to defend their rights and interests. Between 1985 and 1988, I conducted about a year of village level field re- search in the region, mainly in Tumupasa, an ex-Franciscan mission among the Tacana founded in 1713 and transferred to its current location around 1770, San- ta Ana, a mixed community founded in 1971, and 25 de Mayo, a highland colonist cooperative whose members had settled between Tumupasa and Santa Ana from 1979 1 Tacana branch of the Pano-Tacanan language family, whose other current members are the Araona, Cavineño, Ese Ejja, and Reyesano (Maropa).

El libro revela el conocimiento local que mujeres y hombres del Altiplano Norte fueron construyendo año tras año, siendo éste transmitido de generación en generación. “Conocimiento Local en el Cultivo de la Papa” es un libro de gran aporte al presentar panoramas de la vida de productores, mostrando la estructura, roles y funciones de los miembros de las familias alrededor del cultivo de la papa. El libro visibiliza la gran importancia de los saberes locales y del apoyo de instituciones ligadas al desarrollo para el progreso de sus comunidades, ello a través de la implementación de tecnologías que mejoran los sistemas de producción en torno al cultivo de la papa.     Municipio de Patacamaya (Agosto 2002 - enero 2003) Diario de Ángela Copaja En agosto Donde Ángela conoce, antes que nada, el esplendor y derro- che de las fiestas en Patacamaya, y luego se instala para comenzar a trabajar JUEVES 8. Hoy fue mi primer día, estaba histérica, anoche casi no pude dormir y esta mañana tuve que madrugar para tomar la flota y estar en la Alcaldía a las 8:30 a.m. El horario normal es a las 8:00 de la mañana, pero el intenso frío que se viene registrando obligó a instaurar un horario de invierno (que se acaba esta semana). Vine con mi mamá, tomamos la flota a Oruro de las 6:30, llegamos a Patacamaya casi a las ocho y media, y como ya era tarde, tuvimos que tomar un taxi (no sabía que habían por aquí) para llegar a la Al- caldía, pues queda lejos de la carretera. Después de dejarme en mi "trabajo" se fue a buscarme un cuarto, donde se supone me iba a quedar esa noche, pues 51 traje conmigo algunas cosas; me quedaré hoy (jueves) y mañana (viernes) me vuelvo yo solita a La Paz. Ya en la oficina tuve que esperar a que llegara el Profesor Celso (Director de la Dirección Técnica y de Planificación) para que me presentara al Alcalde. Me Revista número 13 • Diciembre 2003 condujo hasta la oficina y me presentó al Profesor Gregorio, el Oficial Mayor, un señor bastante serio que me dio hartísimo miedo pues me trató de una forma muy tosca. Él me presentó al Alcalde, que me dio la bienvenida al Mu- nicipio de Patacamaya muy amablemente.

La historia refiere que la apropiación de tierras comunitarias llevó al surgimiento de caudillos como Tupac Katari y Bartolina Sisa, en homenaje a ellos erigieron un monumento de granito en la plaza principal de Sica Sica, lugar en el que también descansan los restos de quienes protagonizaron la Batalla de Aroma, una de las batallas que permitió la independencia de Bolivia. Que, las principales actividades económicas en la Provincia Aroma, son la ganadería ovina y vacuna y la producción lechera; asimismo, su potencial agrícola se basa en el cultivo de la quinua y la cebada. Que, entre los atractivos turísticos de la Provincia Aroma, destacan el circuito de las iglesias coloniales, las ferias realizadas en cada sección y las aguas termales del balneario de Viscachani.

Dolores Bargues1*, Patricio Artigas1, Rene Angles2, David Osca1, Pamela Duran1, Paola Buchon3, R. Karina Gonzales‑Pomar3, Julio Pinto‑Mendieta3 and Santiago Mas‑Coma1 Abstract Background: Fascioliasis is a snail‑borne zoonotic trematodiasis emerging due to climate changes, anthropogenic environment modifcations, and livestock movements. Many areas where Fasciola hepatica is endemic in humans have been described in Latin America altitude areas. Highest prevalences and intensities were reported from four provinces of the northern Bolivian Altiplano, where preventive chemotherapy is ongoing. New strategies are now incorporated to decrease infection/re‑infection risk, assessment of human infection sources to enable efcient prevention measures, and additionally a One Health initiative in a selected zone. Subsequent extension of these pilot interventions to the remaining Altiplano is key. Methods: To verify reproducibility throughout, 133 specimens from 25 lymnaeid populations representative of the whole Altiplano, and 11 used for population dynamics studies, were analyzed by rDNA ITS2 and ITS1 and mtDNA cox1 and 16S sequencing to assess their classifcation, variability and geographical spread. Results: Lymnaeid populations proved to belong to a monomorphic group, Galba truncatula. Only a single cox1 mutation was found in a local population. Two cox1 haplotypes were new. Comparisons of transmission foci data from the 1990’s with those of 2018 demonstrated an endemic area expansion.

Bolivia Abstract The Department of La Paz has the largest number of wild potato species (Solanum Section Petota Solanaceae) in Bolivia, some of which are rare and threatened by extinction. Solanum achacachense, S. candolleanum, S. circaeifolium, S. okadae, S. soestii and S. virgultorum were all searched for in their type localities and new areas. Isolated specimens of S. achacachense were found in its type localities, while S. candolleanum was found in low density populations. Solanum circaeifolium was also found as isolated specimens or in low density populations in its type localities, but also in new areas. Solanum soestii and S. okadae were found in small, isolated populations. No specimen of S. virgultorum was found at all. The majority of the wild species searched for suffered the attack of pathogenic fungi. Interviews with local farmers revealed the main factors negatively affecting these species to be loss of habitat through urbanization and the use of the land for agriculture and forestry.
