  • Why Early Collective Action Pays Off: Evidence from Setting Protected Geographical Indications
Renewable Agriculture and Food Systems: 32(2); 179–192 doi:10.1017/S1742170516000168 Why early collective action pays off: evidence from setting Protected Geographical Indications Xiomara F. Quiñones-Ruiz1*, Marianne Penker1, Giovanni Belletti2, Andrea Marescotti2 and Silvia Scaramuzzi2 1 Department of Economics and Social Sciences, University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU), Austria. 2 Dipartimento di Scienze per l’Economia e l’Impresa, Università di Firenze. *Corresponding author: [email protected] Accepted 4 April 2016; First published online 22 June 2016 Research Paper Abstract The registration of Geographical Indications (GIs) under the European Union (EU) legislation requires collective action and considerable efforts borne by multiple actors such as producers, processors, public authorities and research centers. We analyze their efforts, risks and benefits by comparing two EU GI registration processes in Italy and Austria, namely the Sorana bean Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) and the Perry from Mostviertel PGI. Results from the insti- tutional and transaction costs analysis suggest that intensive interaction for solving conflicting interests, negotiating quality standards and defining common rules might pay off in indirect benefits and reduced risks. In particular, an in- clusion of diverse and heterogeneous interest groups and a high degree of direct enterprise participation along the GI application process (as observed in the Italian case) generate benefits such as trust and social cohesion, which then support the actual use of the GI label and a better implementation of associated quality standards. A supportive legal framework with assistance from public authorities can back up the community of producers not only in technical aspects, but also as mediators when conflicts seem to be difficult to solve.

  • The Effects of the Legal Protection Geographical Indications: PDO/Pgis in Tuscany
The effects of the legal protection Geographical indications: PDO/PGIs in Tuscany Belletti Giovanni, Brazzini Alessandro and Marescotti Andrea Università di Firenze – Dipartimento di Scienze per l’economia e l’impresa Abstract: Geographical Indications (GIs) are important tools adopted to underline that reputa- tion, qualities and characteristics of a product are strictly linked to its geographical origin. The protection granted to GIs by the law may exert strong effects both on the firms and other stake- holders in the local production system, and also affects the environmental and social sphere of the specific geographic location. Moreover, the use made by firms of the protected GI is in some cas- es far away from its potentiality, and this clearly affects the effects GI protection can have on different dimensions. The GI level of use by firms depends on different factors, including the cost-benefit analysis, the general strategy pursued by firms, and the characteristics of the Product specifications. So far, academic literature has not handled this topic in a systematic perspective. The aim of our work is to show the effects of the GI protection through the analysis of two case-studies related to PDO and PGI products in Tuscany, “Fagiolo di Sorana IGP” (Sorana Bean PGI) and “Pecorino Toscano DOP” (Tuscan Sheep-milk cheese PDO). In particular, the attention has been focused on the strategic decisions that lead farmers and processing firms to decide whether and how to use the protected GI for the production and marketing of their products, and on the effects of the GI protection on firms and local agri-food production systems.

  • Pietrabuona (Tuscany, Italy). Building Archaeology of a Border Settlement Between Lucca and Florence
Pietrabuona (Tuscany, Italy). Building archaeology of a border settlement between Lucca and Florence Gaia LAVORATTI 1 | Antonino MEO 2 1 Dipartimento di Architettura (Università degli Studi di Firenze) | 2 Dipartimento di Civiltà e Forme del Sapere (Università di Pisa) Abstract: The Pietrabuona castle was built by Pietro II, Bishop of Lucca (896-933 AD) on the top of a hill around the Valleriana Valley. After the fail of the first “incastellamento”, a new castle was built in the 12th century, when the new stable demographic consistency allowed the success of the settlement during the Middle and the Modern Ages. In the 14th century Pietrabuona was conquered by Pisa, but brought soon under the Florentine control. The survey campaign (using a combination of a laser scanner and a total station) was carried out by a working group of architects, archaeologists, historians, landscapists and geologists. The synergy of all the skills provided a huge amount of information about the urban and architectural heritage, through the implementation of new protocols. The laser scanning equipment allowed the survey of all the buildings in a few days and a wide range of output that became an essential tool for stratigraphic analysis. In this way it has been possible to identify the buildings’ relative chronology and to analyze the wall building techniques, the architectural elements and the building types. We were also able to define and develop measure- chronology curves, always based on good architectural survey (also in cases of narrow streets, inaccessibility). All these data permitted to know the transformations of the settlement, the technical knowledge, the introduction of new different buildings of the power: from Romanesque Church of S.

  • Pietrabuona Fortress Image-Based Models for Archaeological Dissemination
Pietrabuona fortress Image-based models for archaeological dissemination Alessandro MERLO | Gaia LAVORATTI | Andrea ALIPERTA DiDA: Dipartimento di Architettura – Università degli Studi di Firenze, Italy Abstract: The subject of this paper is the ancient church of San Matteo, built in “La Rocca”, in the medieval settlement of Pietrabuona (Pescia, Pistoia, Italy). This ancient building was built in the XI century and was transformed into a fortification in the XV century, during the battles between Pisa and Florence, but since then it has been abandoned and reduced to ruin. The elaboration of data obtained thanks to a digital survey and the interpretation of such information done by a multidisciplinary research staff have made possible not only the analysis of the distinctive, typological features of the church, but also the analysis of the implementation criteria and stylistic elements that characterize the building. The 3D models are gradually becoming an essential resource for those working in the heritage field, because they introduce potentially innovative applications in the areas of dissemination and preservation: they can be seen as repositories of a variety of data (metric, materic, static, historical, etc.). Starting from laser scanner and digital photogrammetry data through to increasingly refined optimization procedures, it is now possible to obtain a 3D image with greater metric and perceptive reliability in addition to a significant reduction in hardware necessary for visualization. Once a high detail model is well-defined (high-poly), the pipeline presented in this case study allows for the creation of scale models with simplified geometry (low-poly), using the reverse modelling process and modelling techniques taken from the entertainment field.
