ABSTRACT ROBERTS, NATHAN ANDREW. Tapping History: Retrojection, Bridging, and Invented Tradition by North Carolina Craft Brewers (Under the Direction of Dr. Michaela DeSoucey) The growth of the American craft beer market in the past decade offers an exemplary case for examining how localization occurs as a social and contextual process. Although Watson’s (2014a) analysis for the Brewers Association stated that breaking the 3,000 mark for the number of craft brewers in the United States represented a return to the local, there is more to localization than simply where firms are located. This research examines the case of the craft beer market in the Triangle region of North Carolina to understand how localizing markets deal with limited state-level heritage and brewing traditions. Utilizing qualitative methods and drawing upon prior research, I identify strategies for localization. These include: (1) creating a group brewing identity; (2) creating heritage by revising, writing and bridging history; and (3) traditions of invention (Paxson 2013). The use of heritage and traditions represent novel uses of the past, which draw upon retrojection (Berger and Luckmann 1966) of current meanings and understandings into the past, to compel ostensible alignment with the present. SM – 1529 – E PANKAJ GHEMAWAT O – 308 - 029 JORDAN MITCHELL Grolsch: Growing Globally In November 2007, SAB Miller, the world´s second largest brewer,1 announced the friendly takeover of the world’s 51st largest, Royal Grolsch N.V. of the Netherlands, for €816m in cash - 84% more than Grolsch’s value over the previous month. Nick Fell, SABMiller’s Marketing Director, explained the logic of the deal: “[Grolsch is] a fantastic brand. It’s North European, it’s a fantastic product, it’s got unimpeachable brewing credentials and authenticity and credibility. And it’s a damn good product. So for anybody interested in developing their premium beer business, this is an absolute peach of a brand to get hold of… we see huge potential for it in our global footprint, particularly in markets like Latin America and Africa where we’ve got a strong route to market but where the premium beer business is still in its infancy.”2 Grolsch had hitherto focused on developed markets, particularly the UK, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and France, in pursuit of its goal of becoming one of the world’s top 10 global beer brands. Groslch was already the world’s 21st largest global brand, measured by international (non- domestic) volume (see Exhibit 1). International volume had grown to account for slightly over one- half of total volume and, going forward, seemed to offer much more potential. Drinkers often rated Grolsch higher than larger brands, including Heineken, the top global brand as well as the leader in Grolsch’s home market (see Exhibit 2). -

HISTO RK RY A TO M U E R D A O F R T Visit Foley Hoag’s Trademark & Copyright Law blog at trademarkandcopyrightlawblog.com foleyhoag.com SEATTLE TRADEMARK HISTORY TOUR This year, the great city of Seattle, Washington is the location of both the International Trademark Association Annual Meeting (May 19-23) and the American Intellectual Property Law Association Spring Meeting (May 15-17). If you are one of the many lawyers attending these events and you want a Seattle trademark experience, you could do the obvious and visit locations associated with the city’s famous modern brands. Alternatively, you could go back in time a bit further. Washington became the 42nd state in 1889, the same year the Great Seattle Fire destroyed much of the city. A combination of new railroad lines and post-fire construction led to a boom in population and commercial activity. On July 17, 1897, this already-promising economic climate went into hyper-drive when the S.S. Portland arrived from Alaska, heralding the beginning of the Klondike gold rush. The trademark disputes that arose from this economic activity started working their way into the published opinions of the Ninth Circuit and the newly christened Washington Supreme Court in the first decades of the twentieth century. We took a look at the first ten trademark disputes involving the city of Seattle (which date from the turn of the century up to the start of World War I). To our delight, we found them riddled with connections to celebrities, shootouts, world politics and the multicultural fabric of migration in the American west. -

Zeh, Ph.D., Dean Graduate School i Abstract This thesis investigates the enduring presence of gender inequality in the modern craft brewing industry through an analysis of linguistic practices on beer labels, in craft beer documentaries, and through ethnographic inquiry at craft beer spaces, including independent breweries and bottle shops. This project tracks the subtle presence of linguistic and discursive boundary markers that index the preeminence of masculinity as a prerequisite for belonging in the craft industry, while simultaneously subordinating women as accessories to male achievements across multiple sites and in varied contexts. Through textual and qualitative analysis alongside participant observation at several craft brewing environments, I contend that women working in this industry are confronted with narrow stereotypes that limit their potential to be authoritative leaders or experts in their craft. Faced with the classic “trap question,” women who work in the craft brewing industry have little ability to influence the future of craft beer as leaders because they are diminished and distracted by enduring inequality that undermines and frustrates their contributions. -
