Based on Jeffrey Wainwright, George Lansing Raymond, and Liu Xie’s theories, this study was conducted from four perspectives: theme, content, prosody structure and aesthetic features. The purposes of my thesis are to trace the originality of 160 folk songs in Shijing and 47 folk songs in Han yuefu , to illuminate the origin of Chinese folk songs and to demonstrate the secularism reflected in Chinese folk songs. My research makes contribution to the following four areas: it explores the relation between folk songs in Shijing and Han yuefu and compares the similarities and differences between them ; it reveals the poetic kinship between Shijing and Han yuefu; it evaluates the significance of the common people’s compositions; and it displays the unique artistic value and cultural influence of Chinese early folk songs. ii Acknowledgments I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my supervisor Professor Graham Sanders for his supervision, inspirations, and encouragements during my two years M.A study in the Department of East Asian Studies at University of Toronto. -

Chen certifies that this is the approved version of the following dissertation: REPRESENTING TALENTED WOMEN IN EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY CHINESE PAINTING: THIRTEEN FEMALE DISCIPLES SEEKING INSTRUCTION AT THE LAKE PAVILION ________________________________ Chairperson Marsha Haufler Date approved: May 13, 2016 ii Abstract As the first comprehensive art-historical study of the Qing poet Yuan Mei (1716–97) and the female intellectuals in his circle, this dissertation examines the depictions of these women in an eighteenth-century handscroll, Thirteen Female Disciples Seeking Instructions at the Lake Pavilion, related paintings, and the accompanying inscriptions. Created when an increasing number of women turned to the scholarly arts, in particular painting and poetry, these paintings documented the more receptive attitude of literati toward talented women and their support in the social and artistic lives of female intellectuals. These pictures show the women cultivating themselves through literati activities and poetic meditation in nature or gardens, common tropes in portraits of male scholars. The predominantly male patrons, painters, and colophon authors all took part in the formation of the women’s public identities as poets and artists; the first two determined the visual representations, and the third, through writings, confirmed and elaborated on the designated identities. -

Sieber Advisor East Asian Languages and Literatures ABSTRACT This dissertation is a historical ethnographic study on the act of reading in late imperial China. Focusing on the practice and representation of reading, I present a mosaic of how reading was conceptualized, perceived, conducted, and transmitted from the tenth to the eighteenth centuries. My central argument is that reading, or dushu, was an indispensable component in the tapestry of cultural life and occupied a unique position in the landscape of social history in late imperial China. Reading is not merely a psychological act of individuals, but also a set of complicated social practices determined and conditioned by social conventions. The dissertation consists of six chapters. Chapter 1 discusses motivation, scope, methodology, and sources of the study. I introduce a dozen different Chinese terms related to the act of reading. Chapter 2 examines theories and practices of how children were taught to read. Focusing on four main pedagogical procedures, namely memorization, vocalization, punctuation, and explication, I argue that the loud chanting of texts and the constant anxiety of reciting were two of the most prominent themes that ran through both the descriptive and prescriptive discourses on the history of reading in late imperial ii China. -

TENTH-CENTURY CHINA AND BEYOND FUNERARY ART Two Royal Tombs from the Early Liao: Architecture, Pictorial Program, Authorship, Subjectivity Wu Hung "In the absence of Qidan [Khitan] ~ft descriptions of themselves," Nancy Steinhardt writes in her path-breaking Liao Architecture, "Chinese writers of standard histories and other texts have become de facto anthropologists. "1 We have two main Chinese records of Qidan burial customs: a tenth-century reference in the Old History of the Tang (Jiu Tangshu ~®i·-n and an eyewitness account by the Southern Song author Wen Weijian x:'ItFJi. The former says that unlike the Chinese, who have always buried the dead in tombs and held elaborate mortuary rites, Qidan people escort the corpse to the high mountains and place it in a tree. Sons and grandsons do not mourn for their deceased parents and grandparents; instead, parents and grandparents cry from morning to night for a deceased male descendant. 2 Wen Weijian's account focuses more closely on the treatment of the corpse, describing in vivid language how Qidan people cut open the corpse of a noble person and stuff it with fragrant ingredients, how they prick the skin to drain bodily fluids, and finally how they adorn the face of the dry mummy with a gold or silver mask. 3 Widely cited in modem studies of Liao tombs, these historical accounts do accord with some archaeological finds, such as the frequent use of metal masks in aristocratic Qidan tombs. But these records also reveal the distinct mentality of their authors, who were mainly interested in the differences between the Qidan and the Chinese. -

The questions they address with their prolific writing are also central to poetic (and literary) endeavors in general: what is the place of poetry among their political, intellectual, and cultural commitments; how to achieve individual freedom under a weighty textual tradition; and how to reconcile naturalness and craft, spontaneity and method. The poets reckoned with the changes in foundational concepts such as Nature, self, and vital force (qi) in the Neo-Confucian movement. -

ABSTRACT Created by Toshio Takahashi and Shinichi Suzuki, Suzuki Flute School Volume 1 contains a variety of music for the beginner flutist. Children‘s songs, folk music, and romantic and baroque music from Japan, France, America, and Germany provide beautiful tunes for the students to learn. Furthermore, beautiful sound is taught through tonalization, and beautiful character through strong relationships among the parent, teacher, and child. Having taught Suzuki flute classes at the Ohio Contemporary Chinese School (OCCS) since 2003, I‘ve had the opportunity to learn about the beautiful Chinese culture. But I have found that many children of Chinese descent have very little exposure to traditional Chinese music and children‘s songs. Due to historical patterns in China of disposing or recycling music, many of their parents do not know many Chinese songs (at least those without political undertones). The Suzuki method itself does not contain any Chinese songs. The purpose of this document is to provide a supplementary book of Chinese flute music for my students at the OCCS, one tailored to coincide with the pedagogical points of Suzuki Flute School Volume 1. -
