Based on Jeffrey Wainwright, George Lansing Raymond, and Liu Xie’s theories, this study was conducted from four perspectives: theme, content, prosody structure and aesthetic features. The purposes of my thesis are to trace the originality of 160 folk songs in Shijing and 47 folk songs in Han yuefu , to illuminate the origin of Chinese folk songs and to demonstrate the secularism reflected in Chinese folk songs. My research makes contribution to the following four areas: it explores the relation between folk songs in Shijing and Han yuefu and compares the similarities and differences between them ; it reveals the poetic kinship between Shijing and Han yuefu; it evaluates the significance of the common people’s compositions; and it displays the unique artistic value and cultural influence of Chinese early folk songs. ii Acknowledgments I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my supervisor Professor Graham Sanders for his supervision, inspirations, and encouragements during my two years M.A study in the Department of East Asian Studies at University of Toronto. -

The questions they address with their prolific writing are also central to poetic (and literary) endeavors in general: what is the place of poetry among their political, intellectual, and cultural commitments; how to achieve individual freedom under a weighty textual tradition; and how to reconcile naturalness and craft, spontaneity and method. The poets reckoned with the changes in foundational concepts such as Nature, self, and vital force (qi) in the Neo-Confucian movement. -

ABSTRACT Created by Toshio Takahashi and Shinichi Suzuki, Suzuki Flute School Volume 1 contains a variety of music for the beginner flutist. Children‘s songs, folk music, and romantic and baroque music from Japan, France, America, and Germany provide beautiful tunes for the students to learn. Furthermore, beautiful sound is taught through tonalization, and beautiful character through strong relationships among the parent, teacher, and child. Having taught Suzuki flute classes at the Ohio Contemporary Chinese School (OCCS) since 2003, I‘ve had the opportunity to learn about the beautiful Chinese culture. But I have found that many children of Chinese descent have very little exposure to traditional Chinese music and children‘s songs. Due to historical patterns in China of disposing or recycling music, many of their parents do not know many Chinese songs (at least those without political undertones). The Suzuki method itself does not contain any Chinese songs. The purpose of this document is to provide a supplementary book of Chinese flute music for my students at the OCCS, one tailored to coincide with the pedagogical points of Suzuki Flute School Volume 1. -

Master of Arts (Music), May 2019, 88 pp., 1 table, 7 figures, 10 musical examples, references, 94 titles. The rasa theory of Indian aesthetics is concerned with the nature of the genesis of emotions and their corresponding experiences, as well as the condition of being in and experiencing the aesthetic world. According to the Indian aesthetic theory, rasa (“juice” or “essence,” something that is savored, that is tasted) is an embodied aesthetic experienced through an artistic performance. In this thesis, I have investigated how the aesthetics of rasa philosophy account for creative presence and its experiences in Karnatik vocal performances. Beyond the facets of grammar, Karnatik rāga performance signifies a deeper ontological meaning as a way to experience rasa, idiomatically termed as rāga-rasa by South Indian rāga practitioners. A vocal performance of a rāga ideally depends on a singer’s embodied experience of rāga and rāga-bhāva (emotive expression of rāga), as much as it does on his/her theoretical knowledge and skillset of a rāga’s svaras (scale degrees), gamakas (ornamentation), lakṣhaṇās (emblematic phrases), and so on. -

Glancing referencesChinese to it appear in poems dating back to the fifth and sixth centuries.The By the first half of the seventh century, the story’s narrative begins to take shape with the appearance of a brief biography in a history of the Jin (265–420). As recorded in the chapter on “Exemplary Women,” Su Hui 蘇惠 (style name Su Ruolan), a gifted poet native of Shiping (a town located in present-day Shaanxi), wove a brocade of a “reversible circular- picture poem” (huiwen xuantu shi 迴文旋圖詩) for her husband Dou Tao, the prefect of Qingzhou who had been exiled to the place of “flowing sands.” This mournful poem of love’s longing consisted of 840 characters and could be read “circularly, in any direction.” xiv | Introduction to the Calligrams Edition A gloss on the poet Jiang Yan’s fifth-century “Rhapsody on Separation,” also written in the early Tang dynasty, added a scan- dalous spin: although Dou Tao swore not to marry again, soon after his banishment to the desert wastes he married another woman. Only then did Su Hui weave her circular poem for him, as an attempt to win back his heart. The most renowned version of the love story is attributed to Wu Zetian and officially dated 692AD . -

The recent addition of a PhD in Artistic Research to the doctoral program deepens our commitment to understanding musical performance from the perspective of the artist-researcher.
