Report of the Director of the Mario Einaudi Center for International Studies The Einaudi Center is a hub for global activity and the primary forum for interdisciplinary study of global affairs at Cornell. It organizes, catalyzes, and supports multi-disciplinary and collaborative research, teaching, and outreach programs and activities that promote cross-cultural and cross-national knowledge and competence, educate students to become citizens of the world, and contributes to solutions of key economic, environmental, and political problems in the world. Established in 1961, the Center and its programs have made a major contribution to our understanding of how the world works and allowed Cornell to contribute to solving problems of international concern. The Einaudi Center seeks to help bring about a truly international university at Cornell, in which international and comparative perspectives are completely integrated into the intellectual life of the university. The John S. Knight Professor of International Studies resides in the Center, occupied in three-five-year terms by the Center Director. The three other professorships devoted to international studies are: • C. Marks Professor of International Studies (currently held by Prof. Kaushik Basu, Economics) • Walter S. Carpenter, Jr. Professor of International Studies (currently held by Prof. Peter Katzenstein, Government) • Aaron Binenkorb Professor of International Studies (currently held by Prof. Valerie Bunce, Government) 1 The Center has four International Faculty Fellows (IFFs) for 3-year terms from 2014 to 2017, and appointed four more IFFs for the years 2015 to 2018. The Center also has two new post- doctoral fellows for the 2014–15 academic year in the field of foreign policy, security studies, and diplomatic history, and appointed two fellows for 2015–16. Both fellowship programs are described in detail below. In addition, about 750 faculty from departments in every college of the university are affiliated with the Einaudi Center, core programs, and other international programs. Center Highlights The Einaudi Center continued to play a key role in developing and implementing key components of the Global Cornell Initiative that started in July 2013 with the appointment of Fredrik Logevall to serve as Cornell’s Vice Provost for International Affairs while remaining director of the Einaudi Center. It received additional funding through the Vice Provost’s office to launch several new initiatives during this second year. In addition, the Center continued to organize and sponsor a wide range of activities in the area of international studies. It was a very successful year with many highlights and filled auditoriums. The Center focused on seven interdependent and complementary areas: internationalization of Cornell; academic program activities; support for core international programs; support for academic units, programs, faculty, and students; communications; outreach; and administration. Internationalization of Cornell The Center engages in activities that support internationalization across campus and provides opportunities for all units, faculty, staff, and students to network and address internationalization issues. During the 2014–2015 academic year the Executive Director of the Center also assumed the role of Director for VPIA Operations to further the close interaction between the two offices to the benefit of both. The Center invested in several initiatives, including the International Faculty Fellows program, involvement with the Working Group for Engagement and Inclusion in Global Education (GEIGE), activities related to support for language studies and meaningful international experiences for students, faculty forums, the annual international studies and language fair, the 15th annual International Education Week, and the Cornell International Education Network (CIEN). A centerpiece of the Global Cornell Initiative is the appointment of International Faculty Fellows (IFFs) with the Einaudi Center. This new initiative is meant to foster new collaborations between the colleges and the Einaudi Center, to enhance the connectivity of internationalization across campus, and to assist Cornell’s colleges and schools with recruitment and retention of superb faculty whose research and teaching have an international focus. Fellows contribute to the intellectual life of the Mario Einaudi Center for International Studies by hosting workshops in their fields, interacting with various programs housed within the center, and working across disciplines to foster cross-college connections. Nominated by the deans of their respective college/school and chosen by a faculty committee chaired by Vice Provost for International Affairs and Director of the Einaudi Center Fredrik Logevall, fellows are selected on the basis of their internationally focused research, teaching, and scholarly achievements. Andrea Bachner, Comparative Literature (Arts and Sciences); Victoria Beard, City and Regional Planning 2 (Architecture, Art and Planning); Saurabh Mehta, Nutritional Sciences (Human Ecology); and Daniel Selva, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (Engineering), just completed the first year of their three-year terms as International Faculty Fellows. Andrea Bachner is a scholar of Comparative Literature and is using her fellowship to envision her future work in even more intercultural and international directions. During this academic year, she was able to conclude several larger (and some smaller) research projects; to interact and collaborate with faculty associated with the East Asia Program and the Institute for German Cultural Studies; to develop two new courses; and to continue research and related activities on her main research project, an analysis of the intercultural links, exchanges, and analogies between China and Latin America as a reflection on the methodology of intercultural comparison Victoria Beard has expanded the international scope of her teaching and research; the fellowship has supported her to take Cornell students to Indonesia to research collective action to alleviate poverty within local communities, and has allowed her to explore the possibility of expanding her comparative research in Southeast Asia to include Myanmar, in conjunction with the Southeast Asia program’s Myanmar initiative. Saurabh Mehta’s research focuses on improving population health through early detection, diagnosis, and intervention, particularly for infectious disease. He hosted a presentation for the South Asia Program about building a research program in India in December 2014, as well as a seminar

Based on Jeffrey Wainwright, George Lansing Raymond, and Liu Xie’s theories, this study was conducted from four perspectives: theme, content, prosody structure and aesthetic features. The purposes of my thesis are to trace the originality of 160 folk songs in Shijing and 47 folk songs in Han yuefu , to illuminate the origin of Chinese folk songs and to demonstrate the secularism reflected in Chinese folk songs. My research makes contribution to the following four areas: it explores the relation between folk songs in Shijing and Han yuefu and compares the similarities and differences between them ; it reveals the poetic kinship between Shijing and Han yuefu; it evaluates the significance of the common people’s compositions; and it displays the unique artistic value and cultural influence of Chinese early folk songs. ii Acknowledgments I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my supervisor Professor Graham Sanders for his supervision, inspirations, and encouragements during my two years M.A study in the Department of East Asian Studies at University of Toronto.

Stephen Owen Chen Zhang Learning to Write Naturally: The Problem of Southern Song Poetry in the Late Twelfth Century Abstract I inquire into the nature of poetic experience by studying six leading poets in the late twelfth century. The questions they address with their prolific writing are also central to poetic (and literary) endeavors in general: what is the place of poetry among their political, intellectual, and cultural commitments; how to achieve individual freedom under a weighty textual tradition; and how to reconcile naturalness and craft, spontaneity and method. The poets reckoned with the changes in foundational concepts such as Nature, self, and vital force (qi) in the Neo-Confucian movement.

ABSTRACT Created by Toshio Takahashi and Shinichi Suzuki, Suzuki Flute School Volume 1 contains a variety of music for the beginner flutist. Children‘s songs, folk music, and romantic and baroque music from Japan, France, America, and Germany provide beautiful tunes for the students to learn. Furthermore, beautiful sound is taught through tonalization, and beautiful character through strong relationships among the parent, teacher, and child. Having taught Suzuki flute classes at the Ohio Contemporary Chinese School (OCCS) since 2003, I‘ve had the opportunity to learn about the beautiful Chinese culture. But I have found that many children of Chinese descent have very little exposure to traditional Chinese music and children‘s songs. Due to historical patterns in China of disposing or recycling music, many of their parents do not know many Chinese songs (at least those without political undertones). The Suzuki method itself does not contain any Chinese songs. The purpose of this document is to provide a supplementary book of Chinese flute music for my students at the OCCS, one tailored to coincide with the pedagogical points of Suzuki Flute School Volume 1.

Master of Arts (Music), May 2019, 88 pp., 1 table, 7 figures, 10 musical examples, references, 94 titles. The rasa theory of Indian aesthetics is concerned with the nature of the genesis of emotions and their corresponding experiences, as well as the condition of being in and experiencing the aesthetic world. According to the Indian aesthetic theory, rasa (“juice” or “essence,” something that is savored, that is tasted) is an embodied aesthetic experienced through an artistic performance. In this thesis, I have investigated how the aesthetics of rasa philosophy account for creative presence and its experiences in Karnatik vocal performances. Beyond the facets of grammar, Karnatik rāga performance signifies a deeper ontological meaning as a way to experience rasa, idiomatically termed as rāga-rasa by South Indian rāga practitioners. A vocal performance of a rāga ideally depends on a singer’s embodied experience of rāga and rāga-bhāva (emotive expression of rāga), as much as it does on his/her theoretical knowledge and skillset of a rāga’s svaras (scale degrees), gamakas (ornamentation), lakṣhaṇās (emblematic phrases), and so on.

As recorded in the chapter on “Exemplary Women,” Su Hui 蘇惠 (style name Su Ruolan), a gifted poet native of Shiping (a town located in present-day Shaanxi), wove a brocade of a “reversible circular- picture poem” (huiwen xuantu shi 迴文旋圖詩) for her husband Dou Tao, the prefect of Qingzhou who had been exiled to the place of “flowing sands.” This mournful poem of love’s longing consisted of 840 characters and could be read “circularly, in any direction.” xiv | Introduction to the Calligrams Edition A gloss on the poet Jiang Yan’s fifth-century “Rhapsody on Separation,” also written in the early Tang dynasty, added a scan- dalous spin: although Dou Tao swore not to marry again, soon after his banishment to the desert wastes he married another woman. Only then did Su Hui weave her circular poem for him, as an attempt to win back his heart. The most renowned version of the love story is attributed to Wu Zetian and officially dated 692AD .

As one of the leading conservatoires in Scandinavia, the Academy is home to a distinguished faculty of international experts, covering a wide range of aca- demic and artistic disciplines. Our students are sys- tematically encouraged to explore connections between musical practice and research. The recent addition of a PhD in Artistic Research to the doctoral program deepens our commitment to understanding musical performance from the perspective of the artist-researcher. I’m truly pleased to see such a broad rostrum of Photo: David Engmo scholars and performers presenting at the confer- ence and look forward to take part in many discus- sions. It is my hope that the ideas radiating from the Oslo conference will contribute to the further devel- opment of the increasingly essential dialogue between doing, observing, articulating and – ulti- mately – understanding music.
