Works Like a Charm: the Occult Resistance of Nineteenth-Century American Literature
WORKS LIKE A CHARM: THE OCCULT RESISTANCE OF NINETEENTH-CENTURY AMERICAN LITERATURE by Noelle Victoria Dubay A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland August 2020 Abstract Works like a Charm: The Occult Resistance of Nineteenth-Century American Literature finds that the question of whether power could work by occult means—whether magic was real, in other words—was intimately tied, in post-Revolutionary America, to the looming specter of slave revolt. Through an examination of a variety of materials—trial narratives, slave codes, novels and short stories, pamphlets, popular occult ephemera—I argue that U.S. planters and abolitionists alike were animated by reports that spiritual leaders boasting supernatural power headed major rebellions across the Caribbean, most notably in British-ruled Jamaica and French-ruled Saint-Domingue. If, in William Wells Brown’s words, the conjurer or root-doctor of the southern plantation had the power to live as though he was “his own master,” might the same power be capable of toppling slavery’s regimes altogether? This question crossed political lines, as proslavery lawmakers and magistrates as well as antislavery activists sought to describe, manage, and appropriate the threat posed by black conjuration without affirming its claims to supernatural power. Works like a Charm thus situates the U.S. alongside other Atlantic sites of what I call “occult resistance”—a deliberately ambivalent phrase meant to register both the documented use of occult practices to resist slavery and the plantocracy’s resistance to the viability of countervailing powers occulted (i.e., hidden) from their regimes of knowledge—at the same time as it argues that anxiety over African-derived insurrectionary practices was a key factor in the supposed secularization of the West. -

The movie, as the title suggests, follows the journey of a priest as he attempts to excise a demon from within the body of a young girl. These types of sensational pop culture depictions are what inform the majority of people’s conceptions of demons and demonic magic nowadays. Historically, however, human conceptions of demons and magic were more nuanced than those depicted in The Exorcist and similar works. Demons were not only beings to be feared but sources of power to be exploited. Necromancy, a form of demonic magic, was one avenue in which individuals could attempt to gain control over a demon. During the period this thesis explores, 1100-1500 CE, only highly educated men, like clerics, could complete the complicated rituals associated with necromancy. Thus, this study examines the rise of the learned art of clerical necromancy in conjunction with the re-emergence of higher learning in western Europe that developed during the period from 1100-1500 CE. -

A CONTENT-ANALYSIS OF THE SATANIC BIBLE’S DESCRIPTIONS OF MAGIC Carter Timon Abstract In 1966 Anton Szandor LaVey founded the Church of Satan (CoS) in California, and by 1969 published The Satanic Bible (1969). While many believe that the use of magic has declined in the Western world, LaVeyan Satanism according to The Satanic Bible actively includes magic while embracing rationalist philosophy. Satanism is an understudied New Religious Movement (NRM) and little is understood about its core tenets and practices. This paper uses content analysis of The Satanic Bible to understand how LaVey originally presents the workings of Satanic magic to his Western audience. -

Magic and the Supernatural in the African American Slave Culture and Society by Maura Mcnamara
Magic and the Supernatural in the African American Slave Culture and Society By Maura McNamara This paper was written for History 396.006: Transformation of the Witch of American Culture. The course was taught by Professor Carol Karlsen in Winter 2010. Although historians have previously explored the role of magic in the African American culture, the more specific question of how slaves defined supernatural agency from their own perspective has yet to be investigated. The purpose of my research is to examine slave folklore and personal testimonies about the paranormal to ascertain the beliefs and practices of supernaturalism among enslaved people in the antebellum American South. Analyzing how these sources portray instances of bewitchment, Voodooism, and spiritual possession, I assess their impact on the slave experiences. Furthermore, I investigate the inconsistency between evil spirits’ inhabitance of slave individuals, cited in oral histories, with the protective and healing conjuration activities attributed to slaves in the secondary sources. While folk tales cite victimization by Voodoo or bewitchment as punitive measures and former slave interviews depict fear affiliated with presumed witches and spirits, supernatural practitioners were highly regarded within their communities. Thus, in evaluating how slaves understood the supernatural, I seek to reconcile its negative connotation within a culture that simultaneously embraced magical practices. Much has been written about the African American religious experience that highlights the importance of magic in slave culture. These sources demonstrate that practices associated with spirit worship were incorporated into the slaves’ daily routines, such as healing rituals, conjuration practices, and religious veneration. However, the question of how slaves actually perceived supernaturalism is rarely addressed. -

African Diaspora 9 (2016) 39–60 brill.com/afdi African Power West African Mediums Catering to Surinamese Clients in the Netherlands Amber Gemmeke* University of Bayreuth, Germany [email protected] Abstract This paper explores how West African migrants’ movements impacts their religious imagery and that of those they encounter in the diaspora. It specifically addresses how, through the circulation of objects, rituals, and themselves, West Africans and Black Dutchmen of Surinamese descent link, in a Dutch urban setting, spiritual empower- ing and protection to the African soil. West African ‘mediums’ offer services such as divination and amulet making since about twenty years in the Netherlands. Dutch- Surinamese clients form a large part of their clientele, soliciting a connection to Afri- can, ancestral spiritual power, a power which West African mediums enforce through the use of herbs imported from West Africa and by rituals, such as animal sacrifices and libations, arranged for in West Africa. This paper explores how West Africans and Dutchmen of Surinamese descent, through a remarkable mix of repertoires alluding to notions of Africa, Sufi Islam, Winti, and Western divination, creatively reinvent a shared understanding of ‘African power’.
