New Beginnings:

Interview with President ThomasKeefe E D I TO R´S NOTE

Fromelcome to the spring Editor2010 edition of Tower, a celebration of new Wbeginnings at the . Most notable, of course, is the interview with President Thomas W. Keefe who speaks passionately and eloquently of his vision for the University, one which includes alumni, parents, and all those who cherish this institution and what it represents. The Haggerty Science Center recently celebrated its 25th anniversary. Included as a part of the festivities were stories from science alumni who are forging new paths in their disciplines, avenues which began here at UD. We know that you will enjoy reading their stories and hearing about the events surrounding the celebration. The landscape in and around the University is changing. The new residence hall opened in January, the DART station is scheduled to begin service in late 2011, and Stadium is now a part of history. Stories about each of these events are contained in this issue. New College of Business Dean Geralyn Franklin shares her plans for the COB, and the University welcomes the return of Bainard Cowan and Stefan Novinski. Both continue the legacies of their famous families yet are fashioning their unique contributions as well. The School of Ministry has a new degree path and Catherine Hall, once home to many of our alumni during their student years, will be the SOM’s new campus headquarters. The National Alumni Board is creating new initiatives to reach out to students and an alumnus, Fraser Holmes ’09, returns to the University as baseball coach. We also have a new section of Tower devoted to stories from alumni relating to the current issue’s theme. The featured story for this issue is from an alumnus Gene Wolande ’78. We encourage you to submit contributions for future issues once a theme is announced. Beginning with the next issue, we also will feature letters from you relating to this issue. You may send those to me at [email protected]. It’s an exciting time as the blossoming peach trees announce spring’s arrival and as the campus and University welcome a new beginning.

New Entry Plaza to Connect Campus with DART Station

Construction for the new University of Dallas DART station is underway and service is expected to begin in December 2011. In anticipation of an increased number of guests arriving on campus via DART, the University of Dallas has begun planning for a new entry plaza located on the northeast corner of campus. The new entry plaza will include some familiar architectural elements. Lyle Novinski, adjunct professor emeritus of art, has assisted the University with a variety of architectural design projects and is again working with the University on the concepts for a campus entrance and walkway. Concepts for the entry plaza include zipper-brick columns, lantern-style lighting, and landscaping around Madonna Pond. A pathway from the plaza into the main campus will begin at the plaza, circle around the Haggerty Art Village, and end at the Tower magazine will be following the Art History Building. New Beginnings:

Interview with President Thomas Keefe.

Thomas Keefe on a Mission…Possible! by Jackie Sears

Thomas W. Keefe, the eighth President of the University of Dallas, is passionately and urgently committed to UD’s being recognized by a much larger population for the quality of work produced here.

“ Ino s many ways, the University still reflects the efforts and innovation of Donald and Louise Cowan, both audacious, courageous educators who created a model that was new, innovative, and fresh. I want UD to be seen as a strong educational contributor that continues the very best of the combined visions of Eugene Constantin, Jr., Edward Maher, Bishop Gorman, and the Sisters of St. Maryf o Namur. The greatness of UD is its commitment to its Core and its fidelity to and love for the Catholic faith. The combination of the core, the Catholic faith, and the Rome program make UD a truly distinctive, unique academic institution second to none.”

Since arriving in the fall of 2009, Khong’s love for UD has only grown. “It’s a hidden gem,” she says. “I never dreamed of finding such a strong concentration of great minds. Now that I am immersed in the Core, I see the world in a different way. A lot of people may feel that reading the Iliad and Plato and Aristotle has no relevance, but from being here, I know it’s relevant. It builds character. The Core is providing UD students with daily insight all while teaching morals and values.” Although it is challenging to be so far away from home, Khong’s family is very supportive. “I’ve got to do this,” she says. “I am here for a reason. Braniff Graduate School of Liberal Arts: A Preparation for Life

The Braniff Graduate School of Liberal Arts has an extraordinarily high placement rate for its graduates. Dr. David Sweet, dean and Institute of Philosophic Studies director, attributes much of the reason for this success to the three disciplines’ (literature, philosophy, and politics) sharing a core curriculum. Originally conceived by Dr. Louise Cowan and Dr. Wilmoore Kendall, UD has the only Ph.D. degree program in the U.S. utilizing a core curriculum in the . A specific canon of great texts of the Western intellectual tradition forms the basis for the core curriculum which is then augmented by a study of one of the three specific disciplines. A study of literature, for instance, is enhanced and defined within the light of philosophy and politics.
