She surfaced 5 times during the exercise and laid wreaths to commemorate the deaths of two shipmates killed in an accident in HMS TIRELESS during the last ICEX. On a lighter note they also played a game of cricket, with a polar bear sentry looking out from the bridge! Lieutenant Commander Hugh C J Mcrae
Lieutenant Commander Hugh C J McRae Hugh Charles James McRae was born on 29th November 1909, the only son of Sir Charles James Hugh McRea Kt JP and Lady Edith Sophia McRea (nee Farnie). He had one sister Marjorie. When growing-up the family home was in Hendon. Hugh joined Lord Williams's Grammar School in 1918, and then in 1926 joined the Royal Navy as an officer cadet at the training school HMS Worcester. He was appointed a Midshipman in 1927 and went on to serve on a number of ships. He married Frances Mary Mason in Hendon in 1935 and they set-up their family home at Airandene, Wise Lane, Mill Hill, Middlesex. However when Hugh was stationed in China in 1936, Frances moved there too, albeit having to sail on a commercial liner – the Perseus – that departed Liverpool in September 1936. A daughter Jean was born in Shanghai in 1937. After serving in China for two years, Hugh returned to the UK and joined the destroyer HMS Grafton in July 1938. The Grafton was assigned to the 1st Destroyer Flotilla in the Mediterranean Fleet and his wife and daughter set up home in Malta in January 1939. In June 1940, during the evacuation from Dunkirk, and after successfully rescuing 1600 troops, the Grafton was struck by a torpedo from U-62., with the captain and 14 others killed, the ship was too badly damaged to be towed to safety, and she was sunk by gunfire from HMS Ivanhoe. Lieutenant McRea was subsequently Mentioned in Despatches, and promoted to Lieutenant Commander, taking over command of the captured French torpedo boat Branlebas. -

He soon became qualified as a gunner at HMS Excellent and then joined the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal in October 1956. In January 1959 Fred joined the Royal Naval Barracks in Portsmouth and by May of the same year he was with HMS Adamant, a submarine depot ship in Faslane, Scotland. In June 1960 Fred joined HMS Cavalier in Singapore, which was part of the 8th Destroyer Squadron based in the Far East. After that he changed branches at HMS Excellent and joined the Provost Staff, Portland as a Leading Patrolman in May 1962. By July 1965 he had joined HMS Terror, in Singapore, where he served in the Fleet Mail Office. Fred one week before sailing for Canada, August 1976. Fred returned to the United Kingdom in 1967 and was posted to HMS Condor. He served the Condor until May 1968 when he joined HMS Nubian, a Tribal Class Frigate serving mainly in the Middle East. -
Introduction This Is a Hardback Reprint of the Original Book, Published in 2011
Destroyer D01 – the story of HMS Caprice 1942 - 1979 Introduction This is a hardback reprint of the original book, published in 2011. I have made some revisions and additions from information received since then. The idea for this book came from the HMS Caprice (1968) Association; originally to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Caprice’s memorable cruise around the world in 1968. However, with input from the Association’s website and from material provided from many who had served aboard during the destroyer’s 30 years service it became obvious that we had become the de facto archives for the ship’s entire history. Despite its D01 pennant number Caprice was not the Royal Navy's first destroyer! She was, however, 'one of the best' to many who served in her. She also was the first of her class to be launched and the last to finally decommission. This, then, is the story of HMS Caprice and of all those who served in her during her service with the fleet from 1943 to 1973. I have tried to include as much human interest material as possible – a warship is much more than just steel and guns – it’s all about the men who live, work and play in her. Those who man the guns, keep watch, scrub the decks, cook the food, operate and maintain the machinery, keep a lookout, monitor the radar and sonar, it is they that make a warship what it is. Although we are nominally claiming copyright for this book anyone may freely use the information and images contained within, providing it is not for commercial profit. -

Abstract JULIAN CORBETT AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF A MARITIME STRATEGY by SAMUEL E. ROGERS NOVEMBER, 2018 Director: DR. WADE G. DUDLEY DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY Sir Julian Corbett (1854-1922) is one of the two most influential theorists of sea power. He defined maritime operations, limited war, and our understanding of the “British Way of War,” while also foreshadowing the Great War at Sea. Corbett’s lasting theoretical contributions to strategic thought are captured in Some Principles of Maritime Strategy (1911). It remains a centerpiece of military and international relations theory and continues to be studied in professional military education alongside Thucydides, Sun Tzu, Antoine-Henri Jomini, Carl von Clausewitz, and Alfred Thayer Mahan. Corbett’s influential theories were shaped by multiple influences, including Mahan, Corbett’s own study of British sea power, his reading and understanding of Clausewitz’s On War, and Admiral John Fisher’s naval revolution at the turn of the twentieth century. While Mahan linked sea power with national power, Corbett illuminated this relationship and displayed a keen understanding, developed through his own historical study, of the limits of sea power, and war more broadly, as an instrument of national policy. His influential theory on the role of sea power in the geopolitical context of the European balance of power at the turn of the twentieth century is a clear reflection of Britain’s rapidly changing strategic environment and the equally rapid changes in military technology. Heavily influenced by Admiral Fisher, Corbett, building on the work of Mahan and military theorist Carl von Clausewitz, defined maritime strategy, limited war, command of the sea, and, at the height of the British Empire, laid the ground work for understanding a “British way of war.” Corbett was first and foremost a historian and a professional military educator.
