  • Architecture As Frozen Music: Italy and Russia in the Context of Cultural Relations in the 18Th -19Th Centuries
Athens Journal of Humanities & Arts - Volume 4, Issue 2 – Pages 123-132 Architecture as Frozen Music: Italy and Russia in the Context of Cultural Relations in the 18th -19th Centuries By Tatiana Samsonova This article deals with the two kinds of art, architecture and music, in their stylistic mutual influence on the historical background of St. Petersburgʼs founding and developing as the new capital of the Russian Empire in the early 18th century. The author highlights the importance of Italian architects and musicians in the formation of modern culture in Russia and shows how the main features of Baroque and Classicism are reflected both in the architecture and music thanks to the influence of the Italian masters. For the first time the issue of the "Russian bel canto" formation resulted from the Italian maestros working in Russia in 18–19 centuries is revealed. Russian-Italian relations originated in the 18th century and covered various cultural phenomena. Their impact is vividly seen in architecture and music in St. Petersburg, which was founded in 1703 by the Russian Emperor Peter the Great whose strong desire was to turn Russia into Europe. As the famous Russian poet Alexander Pushkin wrote in his "The Bronze Horseman" (1834), "the Emperor cut a Europe window." For St. Petersburg construction as a new Russian capital outstanding Italian architects were invited. The first Italian architect, who came to St. Petersburg, was Domenico Trezzini (1670- 1734), a famous European urban designer and engineer. In the period of 1703- 1716 he was the only architect working in St. Petersburg and the Head of City Development Office.

Knowledge of what was played is almost nonexistent outside Russia; within Russian musical circles much is known and remembered from personal experience, but as is often the case with events comfortably within living memory, it has not yet been a subject for research. With regard to Russian sacred music, links with Russian Orthodoxy mean that its fate was bound up with official Soviet attitudes to the church itself, which were themselves shifting and contradictory over the seventy-four-year Soviet period.

  • Scraping the Rust Off Berezovsky's Demofoonte
Min-Ad: Israel Studies in Musicology Online Giulio Minniti – Scraping the Rust off Berezovsky’s Demofoonte Scraping the Rust off Berezovsky’s Demofoonte GIULIO MINNITI Maxim Berezovsky (early 1740s–77) was the first Russian composer of European art music, and, as such, merits a special place in the history of Russian music. However, his life is shrouded in a lack of biographic information, and literature of past centuries has much mythicized his figure, even to the extent of culminating the narration with a suicide—that seems today dubious at the least.1 According to Marina Ritzarev, P.A. Smirnov (Maxim Sozontovich Berezovsky, 1841), Nestor Kuklonik (Maxim Berezovsky, 1844), and Vera Zhakova (Maxim Berezovsky, 1932–36) are the writers who mainly contributed to turning his biography into an hagiography. These works contributed to forging the myth of Berezovsky in “the darkest, most chauvinistic periods of Russian history, those of Nikolai I and Stalin, and appealed to Russian nationalism at its worst.”2 What is certain is that Berezovsky spent more than a decade playing in operas at Oranienbaum,3 and studying singing and composition in St. Petersburg. Since the imperial capital of that time was full of Italian maestri, he had every opportunity to absorb Italian music styles and features. In 1769, he left St. Petersburg to pursue a career in Italy.4 We may understand from this, that times were now ripe for Russians to take an active part in the Western musical tradition. He settled first in Bologna, where he was permitted acceptance into the prestigious Accademia Filarmonica directed by Padre Martini.5 Subsequently, resulting from his connections with Count Alexsej Orlov (1737–1808),6 who was also a general in the military, Berezovsky worked in the Tuscan cities of Livorno and Pisa.
