The Old Man and the Sea Outline

I. Introduction A. In The Old Man and the Sea, the main character is an old fisherman named Santiago. B. He is a unique character. C. He has done many great feats, yet he is modest. 1. Modest because he does not care what others think. D. THESIS: Santiago is viewed by the younger fishermen as a laughing stock, the older fisherman as pitiable, but only the boy, Manolin, sees him as the hero that he is.

II. Younger fisherman A. Look down on Santiago 1. “They sat on the Terrace and many of the fisherman made fun of the old man” ( 11). 2. make fun of him bc he has not caught in 84 days. a. think they are better B. Change their minds when S. returns w/ . 1. “How is he?” (Hemingway 122). 2. Proves they care. C. Younger fishermen make fun of S. at first, but change minds by end.

III. Older fishermen A. Pity S. 1. “They looked at him and were sad” (Hemingway 11). 2. Pity him bc they know how good he used to be. B. When S. returns, they show their concern. 1. “He was eighteen feet from nose to tail” (Hemingway 122). C. Older fishermen don’t change. They care, but feel sorry.

IV. Manolin A. Sees S. as a father and hero. 1. “The old man taught the boy to fish and the boy loved him” (Hemingway 10). B. M. cares for him. 1. Gives him food and bait C. Cries when S. returns. 1. “He did not care that they saw him crying” (Hemingway 122). D. M. respects S. 1. Respects him bc he truly knows him. a. knows that S. is someone to look up to.

V. Conclusion A. The young fishermen make fun of Santiago, but then see his feat and are awed. B.The old fishermen pity him and care for him. C. However, only Manolin sees him accurately. 1. He cares out of deep respect, not pity. D. Manolin is the one person who sees Santiago as a hero.
