UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA 1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Literature (from Latin Litterae (Plural); letter) is the art of written work, and is not confined to Published sources (although, under some circumtances, unpublished sources can also be exempt). Roberts and Jacob (1993:1) said,

“Literature refers to compositions that tell stories, dramatize situation, express emotions, and nonfiction." Before the invention of writing, literary works were necessarily spoken or sung, and were retained only as long as living people performed them. From the statement, it is concluded that three are kinds of literature, namely: (1) novel (a work of prose fiction written in the narrative, usually in the form of stories), (2) drama (literature designed to be performed by actors who played works of art orally among the players (dialogue), (3) poetry

(expresses a conversation or interchange that is grounded in the most deeply felt experiences of human beings).

Carter and McRae (1997:3) said,”Literature is as od as human language, and as new as tomorrow’s sunrise. And literature is every where, not only in books, but in videos, television, radio, computers, newspapers in all the media of communication where a story in told or an image created.”

Literature represents a language or a people, culture, and tradition. But, literature is more important than just a historical or culture artifact. Literature introduce us to new worlds or experiences. We learn about books and literature.

We may even grow and evolve through our literary journey with books.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA Ultimately, we may discover meaning in literature by looking at what the author says and we may received the author’s message.

The word ‘novel’ is derived from Italian word ‘novella’ that used to describe a short, compact, boardly realistic tale popular during the medieval period. Until the seventeenth century ‘novel’ if it was used at all, meant a short story of the kind written and collected by Boccaccio (1313:75) in his decameron.

By about 1700, he had got something like its present meaning, which, as the shorter oxford dictionary tell us, is ‘a factious prose narrative of considerable length in which character and action representative of real life are portrayed in a plot of more or less complexeity’. In other word a novel, as we understand it today, is a story longer, more realistic and more complicated than the Italian novella as written by Boccaccio and other writers at the time. The novel is now the most widely read in all of kinds of literature, and the new from of such kind of prose was then called ‘novel’(novel means ‘new’).

Novel is a story which tells about someone life. Novels do not, however, present a documentary picture of life. Along side the fact that novels look at people in society, the other major characteristic of the genre is that novels tell a story. In fact, novel tend to tell the some few stories time and time.

Richard Taylor (1981:460) said that “Novel is a form of literary work.

Novel is normally a prose work of quite some length and complexity, which attempts to reflect and express something of the quality or value of human experience or conduct”.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA Some of novels are fiction and some based on true stories. Both of those not only entertain but also give meaning messages and impression to readers.

Most people are concerned with ordinary people and their problems in the societies in which the find themselves (John Peck and Martin Cpyle,1998:102).

Novel have Intrinsic Elements and Extrinsic Elements. Wellek& Warren

(1956:75:135) said, “ an intrinsic element, the element also comparises a number of extrinsic elements. The element in question among other, is the state of individual subjectivity authors who have attitudes, beliefs, and outlook on life all of which will affect the work that he wrote. In short, element of the author biographies will also determine the pattern works it produces. Extrinsic element next is psychology, psychology of the author either in the form (which includes the process of creativity), psychology readers, as well as the application of psychological principles in the works. the division of the intrinsic elements of the structure works belonging traditional Martial Arts is the division based on the form and content elements-a dichotomous division of real people with tittle objective received. Extrinsic elements (extrinsic) are the elements that are beyond the works of Martial Arts, but indirectly affect the building os system of the organism’s Martial Arts. Extrinsic elements of a novel must be still seen as something important.Intrinsic elements (intrinsic) are the elements that build the literary work itself. Elements are what because the literary present as a work of

Martial Arts. Intrinsic elements of a novel element (directly) participate and build the story. The intrinsic elements of novel are plot, theme, setting, point of view, and character. Plotis the literary element that describes the structure of a story. It

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA shows arrangement of events and actions within a story.Settingis the time and place of the action. Theme is the idea of the story. Point of view is the perspective from which a story is told. And character, character is a person in a story, not an ordinary person but a someone who only exist in the words of the story.

Character is one of the intrinsic elements. The character has an important role in the story. Besides, it makes the story alive. Character is also viewed as strategic positions to carry a message or something that the author wants to convey in the story. So, a character which represents a person becomes something interest in the story. As Holman states that character most often used to refer to a person in a fictional story (23). In other opinions states that character in a novel can be differentiated into several kinds based on point of view, character can be categorized into several at once, for example as main character protagonist and character's antagonist (Foster 44).

Characters are what make stories. Without a character, there is no story to tell, only a lot of scenery. Many characters in literature, television series, and movies have a huge impact on people. Some people like to live their lives through these characters, who appear to have more exciting lives. Also, these characters may seem so real and inspirational, that people forget they are fictional.

Characters become so important to the audience, that cities across the country hold conventions in which people pay a lot of money to dress and act as their favorite.

In this paper, the writer will discuss the main characters in a novel Harry

Potter and the Philopher’s stone. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s stone is

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA thefirst novel in the Harry Potter series and J. K. Rowling's debut novel, first published in 1997 by Bloomsbury. It was published in the United States as Harry

Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by Scholastic Corporation in 1998.

The writer decided to choose A Description of Main Characters in

J.K.Rowling’s Novel: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s stone as the subject of this paper because the writer thinks that the story of the novel is very unique because is talk about wizard school and also so many the great wizard in the world. Then, this story tells about the death and resist it.

Based on short explanation above, the writer is interested in raising main character as the topic and take J.K.Rowling’s novel : Harry potter and the philosopher’stone as the finding source. This paper gives a brief description about the main character found in the novel.

1.2 Problem of the Study

(1) The problem of the study isHow are the main characters portrayed in

J.K.Rowling’snovel : Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s stone?

1.3 Scope of the Study

There are many important aspects can be discussed in the novel. In writing this paper, the writer only foccus about the intrinsict elements of the novel that’s talk about the description of the main characters. And foccus to described of the main characters from the novel by statements of the author.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA 1.4 Objective of the Study

The Objective of the study is :

(1) To describe the main character in the novel.

1.5 Significance of the Study

The study is absolutely significant to guide the reader in learning elements of the intrinsic in the novel, and to become a refrence for subsequent researchers in descripting the elements of character in the novel.

1.6 Method of The Study

In writing this paper the writer used library research method, such as the writer read the novel for several time to make her understand about the story. The writer browsed data from internet to find the datas of the author and also the writer read a book of the literature science to complete the paper.

In finding the data, the writer used descriptive qualitative method, then made conclusion about it. Bunging (2001:290) says,

“Penggunaanstrategideskriptifkualitatifdimulaidarianalisis yang terhimpundarisuatupenelitiankemudianbergerakkearahpembentukankesimpulankat egoriatauciri – ciriumumtertentu. ( The use of qualitative descriptive strategy starts with an analysis of various aggregate data from a research then moves towards the establishment of conclusion category of certain common.)

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA 2. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

2.1 Definition of Novel

The word ‘novel’ is derived from Italian word ‘novella’ that used to describe a short, compact, boardly realistic tale popular during the medieval period. Until the seventeenth century ‘novel’ if it was used at all, meant a short story of the kind written and collected by Boccaccio (1313:75) in his decameron.

Novel is collecting of story in chapter by chapter but it still have related in one others that describes fictional characters and events, usually in the form of a sequential story. It also as a literary work that is has been appreciated by many people because it has entertained them.

Novel is a story which tells about someone life. Novels do not, however, present a documentary picture of life. Extrinsic elements of a novel must be still seen as something important.Intrinsic elements (intrinsic) are the elements that build the

Plotis the literary element that describes the structure of a story, It shows arrangement of events and actions within a story.Settingis the time and place of the action. Theme is the idea of the story. Point of view is the perspective from which a story is told. And Character, character is a person in a story, not an ordinary person but a someone who only exist in the words of the story.

2.2 Definition of Character

Character is a person in a story or a play (Duffy and Pettit, 1953: 24). In fiction, a character may be defined as a verbal representation of a human being.

Through action, speech, description, and commentary, authors potray. Characters who are worth caring about, rooting for, and even loving, although there are also characters you may laugh at, dislike, or even hate. Roberts and Jacob (1983:131) in their book Literature: an introduction to reading and writing stated, that character may be defined as a verbal.

The character has an important role in the story. Besides, it makes the story alive. Character is also viewed as strategic positions to carry a message or something that the author wants to convey in the story. So, a character which represents a person becomes something interest in the story. As Holman states that character most often used to refer to a person in a fictional story (23).

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA In other opinions states that character in a novel can be differentiated into several kinds based on point of view, character can be categorized into several at once, for example as main character protagonist and character's antagonist (Foster

44).

The general character in a story, whether he is sympatric or an unsymphatic person, is related to the protagonist, they forced arrayed against him, whether person or things, they are the antagonist (Perrine, 1978: 43).

In disclosed characters in fiction, authors use five ways to present their characters, (1) Action, what characters do is our best way to understand what they are. For example, walking in the woods is recreation for most people, and it shows little about their characters. As ordinary human beings, fictional characters do not necessarily understand how they may be changing or why they do the things they do. Nevertheless, their actions express their characters. Action may also signal qualities such as naivete, weakness, deceit, trong, inner conflicts, or a realization or growth of some sort. (2) Descriptions, both personal and environmental.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA Appearance and environment reveal much about a character’s social and economic status, of course, but they also tell us more about character traits. (3)

Dramatic statements and thoughts. Although the speeches of most characters are functional – essential to keep the story moving along – they provide material from which you can draw conclusions. (4) Statements by other character. By studying what characters say about each other. (5) Statements by the author speaking as storyteller or observer. What the author, speaking with the authorial voice, says about a character is usually accurate, and the authorial voice can be accepted factually.

2.3 Types of Characters

The British novelist and critic E. M. Forster, in his critical work Aspect of

the Novel, calls the two major types “round” and “flat”.

2.3.1. Round Characters.

The basic trait of round characters is that they recognize, change with, or adjust to circumtances. The round character – usually the main figure in a story – profits from experience and undergoes a change or alteration, which may be shown in (1) an action or actions, (2) the realization of new strength and therefore the affirmation of previous decisions, (3) the acceptance of a new condition, or (4) the discovery of unrecognized truths.

Because round they usually play a major role in a story, round characters often called the hero or heroine. Many main characters are anything but heroic, however, and it is therefore preferable to use the more neutral word protagonist.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA The protagonist is the central to the action, moves against an antagonist, and exhibits the ability to adapt to new circumtances.

To degree that round characters are both individual and sometimes unpredictable, and because they undergo change or growth, they are dynamic.

2.3.2. Flat Characters

In contrast, flat characters do not grow. They remain the same because they may be stupid or insentive or lacking in knowledge or insight. They end where they begin and are static, not dynamic. But flat characters are not therefore worthless, for they usually highlight the development of round characters.

Usually, flat character are minor ( e.g., relatives, acquaintances, functionaries), although not all minor characters are necessarily flat.

2.4 Main Character

The British novelist and critic E. M. Forster, said that, round characters

that calls main character that also dynamic, are protagonist and antagonist.

• The protagonist is the central to the action, moves against an

antagonist, and exhibits the ability to adapt to new circumtances.

Classically protagonist derived from good will, however, this does not

always to be true.

• The antagonist is character of force that opposes the protagonist. The antagonist, when there is one, provides the story conflict.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA 3. DESCRIPTION AND FINDINGS

3.1 Description

In the novel the writer found main characters that divided by 2 types, protagonist and antagonist.

• PROTAGONIST

(1) Harry Potter

The son of James and Lily Potter and nephew of Vernon and Petunia

Dursley.Harry Potter is the hero of the story. Orphaned as a baby, he is brought up by his aunt and uncle, the Dursleys, maltreated by them, and tormented by their obnoxious son, Dudley. At the beginning of the book, Harry is a skinny, sloppy, isolated from his family, the constant victim of his cousin's bullying, and marked with a lightning-shaped scar on his forehead (the result of Voldemort's failed attempt to kill him during his infancy).

After his discovery of his magical abilities and his introduction to the and , Harry begins to grow in confidence, strength, and courage until he becomes a worthy protagonist, capable of facing off against the

Dark Lord himself by the end of the book. Harry is particularly affected by the deaths of his parents and much of his behavior is informed by his loneliness and desire to avenge their wrongful deaths. Harry also distinguishes himself with his unexcepted brilliance at , his loyalty to his friends, and his modesty, a trait is particularly surprising in the figure lauded as "the boy who lived" across

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA thewizarding world.Yet even after he becomes famous, Harry never loses his modesty and humility.

Even by the end of the story, when he has obtained the Philosopher’s

Stone and saved Hogwarts (and perhaps the whole world) from Voldemort, Harry does not revel in his success. He simply asks Dumbledore a few factual questions and is satisfied with the answers, never expecting any praise. Moreover, he does not wish to use his powers to fulfill grandiose wishes. Dumbledore wisely knows that, unlike Voldemort, Harry will desire only to get the magic stone, not to use it.

He does not covet riches or power, or harbor any secret wild ambition; he just wants to make sure that the stone and its power do not fall into the wrong hands.

The simplicity of his desire is part of what makes him a hero. Much of his humility can be attributed to Professor Dumbledore's decision to place him in the

Dursley household after the death of his parents, rather than force him to endure the constant attention of the wizarding world. Because of his background, Harry often views himself as an unexceptional character, which makes his achievements in the wizarding world all the more impressive.

(2)

Hermione’s character develops significantly over the course of the story and sheds light on Harry’s character as well. At the outset, she is an annoying perfectionist, a goody-two-shoes who has read all the books for her classes in advance, has learned all about Hogwarts, and never breaks the rules. When she first speaks to Harry on the train ride to school, she is eager to impress him with

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA her knowledge, whereas Harry only wants to make friends. Her intellectual talents are indeed worthy of pride, as we find out later when she scores 112 percent on her final exam. But we sense that her show-off side is a defense against her feelings of inferiority, because she comes from a family and, like Harry, is unfamiliar with the wizard world. In both Hermione and Harry we see that learning wizardry requires a great deal of social adjustment and self-confidence.

Hermione’s development into a likable character and a friend begins in the troll episode, when Harry and Ron are reprimanded for trying to save her from the monster and she coolly delivers a bold-faced lie to the teacher. The little girl who has been abiding by all the school rules now dares to lie to her superiors, and a new friendship is born. Hermione’s decision to support her friends rather than obey the rules showcases what is perhaps truly valuable about Harry’s Hogwarts experience. The school teaches him not just facts from books and how to follow procedures, but also—and perhaps more important—loyalty, compassion for others, and solidarity.

(3) Ron Weasley

The youngest son of the Weasley family and Harry's best friend.

Characterized by his modesty, shyness, occasional insecurity, and thirst to escape the ever-looming shadows of his successful brothers, Ron proves himself to be a loyal friend to both Harry and Hermione and a brilliant player of wizarding chess.

Although Ron acknowledges the difficulties of being the youngest son of a poor wizarding family (resulting in constant hand-me-downs), he rarely expresses any

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA resentment to his family and desires only to become individually successful and significant. As a wizard, Ron is mediocre, often needing Hermione's help for spells and homework assignments, but he is able to scrape by academically and never fails to perform during dangerous situations.

(4) Professor

The kind, wise head of Hogwarts. Though he is a famous wizard,

Dumbledore is as humble and adorable as his name suggests. While other school officials, such as Professor McGonagall, are obsessed with the rules, Dumbledore respects them (as his warnings against entering the Forbidden Forest remind us) but does not exaggerate their importance. He appears to have an almost superhuman level of wisdom, knowledge, and personal understanding, and it seems that he may have set up the whole quest for the Sorcerer’s Stone so that

Harry could prove himself.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA • ANTAGONIST

(5) Voldemort

A great wizard gone bad. When he killed Harry’s parents, Voldemort gave

Harry a lightning-shaped scar. Voldemort has thus shaped Harry’s life so that

Harry’s ultimate destruction of him appears as a kind of vengeance. Voldemort, whose name in French means either “flight of death” or “theft of death,” is associated both with high-flying magic and with deceit throughout the story. He is determined to escape death by finding the Philosopher’s Stone. Voldemort’s weak point is that he cannot understand love, and thus cannot touch Harry’s body, which still bears the traces of Harry’s mother’s love for her son.

(6)

A first-year student in Slytherin House and Harry's particular enemy while at Hogwarts.Described as blonde with a pale, pointed face,an arrogant student and

Harry’s nemesis.Malfoy, whose name translates roughly to “dragon of bad faith,” is a rich snob from a long line of wizards who feels entitled to the Hogwarts experience. He makes fun of the poorer Ron Weasley and advises Harry to choose his friends more carefully. As the story progresses, Malfoy becomes more and more inimical to Harry and his friends, and there is a hint that he may grow up to become another Voldemort.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA (7) Professor Quirrell

A stuttering and seemingly harmless man, and a professor of Defense against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts. Quirrell appears as nervous and squirrelly as his name suggests for most of the story. It is he, for example, who nearly faints when announcing the news that a troll is loose in the school. It turns out later, however, that Quirrell has faked his withdrawing meekness and is actually a cold- blooded conniver.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA 3.2 Findings

• PROTAGONIST

(1) Harry Potter

The protagonist of the story, who is gradually transformed from timid weakling to powerful hero by the end, when Harry got and saved the philosopher’s stone from the evil wizard, voldemort. It maked him become a hero.Yet even after he becomes famous, Harry never loses his modesty and humility.

“ And Sir, there’s one more thing...

” Just the one?”

“ How did I get the Stone out of the Mirror?’’

“ Ah, now, I’m glad you asked me that. It was one of my more brilliant ideas, and between you and me, that’s saying something. You see, only one who wanted to find the Stone – find it, but not use it – would be able to get it, otherwise they’d just see themselves making gold or drinking Elixir of life.” (J.K.Rowling; Publish by Bloomsbury; 2014; 323)

Harry also distinguishes himself with his unexcepted brilliance at

Quidditch,

“ Potter, this is Oliver Wood – I’ve found you a seeker”

“Are you serious, Professor?”

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA “ Absolutely,” said Professor McGonagall crisply. the boy’s a natural. I’ve never seen anything like it. Was that your first time on a broomstick, Potter?”

“Your father would have been proud, “ she said. “ He was an excellent Quidditch player himself.”

Harry had just finished telling Ron what happened when he’d left the grounds with Professor McGonagall.

“ Seeker?” Ron said. “ But first-years never – you must be the youngest house player in about – “ (J.K.Rowling; Publish by Bloomsbury; 2014; 163)

“ Ron! Ron! Where are you? The game’s over! Harry’s won! We’ve won!

Gryffindor are in the lead!” shrieked Hermione. (J.K.Rowling; Publish by

Bloomsbury; 2014; 241)

His loyalty to his friends,

“I’ve just thought – Hermione, What about her?, she doesn’t know about the troll.”

” Hermione had become a bit more relaxed about breaking rules since Harry and

Ron had saved her from the mountain troll an she was much nicer for it.”

(J.K.Rowling; Publish by Bloomsbury; 2014; 194)

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA His modesty, nerve, and courage,

“ Third – to Mr Harry Potter.... “ said Dumbledore. The room went deadly quiet.”... for pure nerve and outstanding courage, I award Gryffindor house sixty point.” (J.K.Rowling; Publish by Bloomsbury; 2014; 329)

“ You drink that,” said Harry. “ No, listen – get back and get Ron – grab brooms from the flying-key room, they’ll get you out of the trapdoor and past Fluffy – go straight to the owlery and send Hedwig to Dumbledore, we need him. I might be able to hold Snape off for a while, but I’m no match for him really.”

“ But Harry – what if You-Know-Who’s with him?”

“Well – I was lucky one, wasn’t I?” said Harry, pointing at his scar. “I might get lucky again.” (J.K.Rowling; Publish by Bloomsbury; 2014; 307-308)

“ The Harry Potter?” The last thing Harry saw before the hat dropped over his eyes was the Hall full of people craining to get a good look at him. Next second he was looking at the black inside of the hat. He waited.

“ Hmm,” said a small voice in his ear. “Difficult. Verry difficult. Plenty of courage, I see. Not a bad mind, either. There’s talent, oh my goodness, yes – and a nice thirst to prove yourself, now that’s interesting... so where shall I put you?”

(J.K.Rowling; Publish by Bloomsbury; 2014; 129)

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA Harry gripped the edges of the stool and thought, “Not Slytherin, not Slytherin.”

“Not Slytherin, eh?” said the small voice. “ Are you sure? You could be great, you know, it’s all here in your head, and Slytherin will help you on the way to greatness, no doubt about that – no ? Well, if you’re sure – better be

GRYFFINDOR!” (J.K.Rowling; Publish by Bloomsbury; 2014; 130)

a trait is particularly surprising in the figure lauded as "the boy who lived" across the wizarding worldmaked him become a famous boy even a legend that’s why Dumbledore bring him to his aunt and uncle, The Dursley, to protect himself until he’s ready.

” What they’re saying,“ she pressed on, “is that last night Voldemort turned up in

Godric’s Hollow. He went to find the Potters. The rumour is that Lily and James

Potter are – are – that they’re – dead.” (J.K.Rowling; Publish by Bloomsbury;

2014;12)

“ That’s not all. They’re saying he tried to kill the Potter’s son, Harry. But – He couldn’t. He couldn’t kill that little boy. No one knows why, or how, but they’re saying that when he couldn’t kill Harry Potter, Voldemort’s power somehow broke – and that’s why he’s gone. (J.K.Rowling; Publish by Bloomsbury;2014;13)

“ I’ve come to bring Harry to his aunt and uncle. They’re the only family he has left now.”

“ It’s the best place for him, “said Dumbledore firmly. I’ve written them a letter.”

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA “ A letter?” repeated Professor McGonagall faintly. “Really, Dumbledore, you think you can explain all this in a letter? These people will never understand him!

He’ll be famous – a legend – I wouldn’t be surprised if today was known as Harry

Potter Day in future – there will be books written about Harry – every child in our world wil know his name!” (J.K.Rowling; Publish by Bloomsbury; 2014;14)

” To Harry Potter _ the boy who lived!” (J.K.Rowling; Publish by Bloomsbury;

2014;18)

“ I’m Harry Potter,” said Harry.

“ Are you really?” said Hermione. “ I know all about you, of course – I got a few extra books for background reading, and you’re in Modern Magical History and

The Rise and Fall of the Dark Arts and Great Wizarding Events of the Twentieth

Century.” (J.K.Rowling; Publish by Bloomsbury; 2014;113)

Harry is a skinny, sloppy, isolated from his family, the constant victim of his cousin's bullying, and marked with a lightning-shaped scar on his forehead

(the result of Voldemort's failed attempt to kill him during his infancy).

“ Perhaps it had something to do with living in a dark cupboard, but Harry had always been small and skinny for his age. He looked even smaller and skinnier than he really was because all he had to wear were old clothes of Dudley’s amd

Dudley was about four times bigger than he was. Harry had a thin face, knobbly knees, black hair and bright green eyes. He wore round glasses held together with a lot of Sellotape because of all the times Dudley had punched him on the nose.

The only thing Harry liked about his own appearance was a very thin scar on his

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA forehead which was shaped like a bolt of lightning.” (J.K.Rowling; Publish by

Bloomsbury; 2014; 21)

(2) Hermione Granger

Hermione’s character develops significantly over the course of the story and sheds light on Harry’s character as well. At the outset, she is clever, an annoying perfectionist, a goody-two-shoes who has read all the books for her classes in advance, has learned all about Hogwarts, and never breaks the rules.

”´Are you sure that’s a real spell? “ said the girl. “ Well, it’s not very good, it it?

I’ve tried a few simple spells just for practice and it’s all worked for me. No body in my family’s magic at all, it was ever such a surprise when I got my letter, but I was ever so pleased, of course, I mean, it’s the very best school of witchcraft there is, I’ve learnt all our set books off by heart, of course, I just hope it will be enough

_ I’m Hermione Granger, by the way, who are you?” She said all this very fast.

(J.K.Rowling; Publish by Bloomsbury; 2014; 112)

“ Are you really?” said Hermione. “ I know all about you, of course – I got a few extra books for background reading, and you’re in Modern Magical History and

The Rise and Fall of the Dark Arts and Great Wizarding Events of the Twentieth

Century.” (J.K.Rowling; Publish by Bloomsbury; 2014; 113)

“ No one was talking much except Hermione Granger, who was whispering very fast about all the spells she’d learnt and wondering which one she’d need.”

(J.K.Rowling; Publish by Bloomsbury; 2014; 123)

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA “ Hermione took out a list of subjects and titles she had decided to search.”

(J.K.Rowling; Publish by Bloomsbury; 2014; 212)

“ You’re saying it wrong,” Harry heard Hermione snap. It’s Wing-gar-dium Levi- o-sa, make the “gar” nice and long.”

“You do it, then, if you’re so clever,” Ron snarled.

“Hermione rolled up the sleeves of her gown, flicked her wand and said,

“WingardimLeviosa!” Their feather rose off the desk and hovered about four feet above their heads.”

“ Oh, well done!” cried Professor Flitwick, clapping. “ Everyone see here, Miss

Granger’s done it!” (J.K.Rowling; Publish by Bloomsbury; 2014; 184)

“ Brilliant,” said Hermione. “ Thisin’t magic – it’s logic – a logic, they’d be stuck in here for ever.”

“ But so will we, won’t we?”

“ Of course not,” said Hermione. Everything we need is here on this paper. Seven bottles: three are poison; two are wine; one will get us safely though the black fire and one will get us back though the purple.”

“ But how do we know which to drink?”

“ Give me a minute.” Hermione read the paper several times. Then she walked up and down the line of bottles, muttering to herself and pointing at them. At last, she

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA clapped her hands. “ Got it,” she said. “ The smallest bottle will get us though the black fire – towards the Stone.” (J.K.Rowling; Publish by Bloomsbury; 2014;307)

“Second – to Miss Hermione Granger... for the use of cool logic in the face of fire,

I award Gryffindor house fifty points.”

”Please, Professor McGonagall – they were looking for me” Hermione had managed to get to her feet at last. “ I went looking for the troll beacause I – I thought I could deal with it on my own – you know, because I’ve read all about them.”Hermione Granger telling a downright lie to a teacher.“ If they had’nt found me, I’d be dead now.” (J.K.Rowling; Publish by Bloomsbury; 2014; 190)

Hermione’s decision to support her friends rather than obey the rules. The school teaches him not just facts from books and how to follow procedures, but also—and perhaps more important—loyalty, compassion for others, and solidarity.

“ I never thought to look in here!” she whispered excitedly. “ I got this out of library weeks ago for a bit of light reading.” Hermione helped Harry to found information about the Philosopher’s Stone. (J.K.Rowling; Publish by

Bloomsbury; 2014; 236)

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA “ Harry – you’re a great wizard, you know.”

“ I’m not as good as you,” said Harry, very embarrassed, as she let go of him.

“ Me!” said Hermione. “ Books! and cleverness! There are more important things

– friendship and bravery and – oh Harry – be careful! (J.K.Rowling; Publish by

Bloomsbury; 2014; 308)

(3) Ron Weasley

A shy, modest boy who comes from an impoverished wizard family.

“Excusme me,” Harry said to the plump woman.

“ Hullo, dear,” she said. “ First time at Hogwarts? Ron’s new, too.” She pointed at the last and youngest of her sons. He was tall, thin and gangling, with freckles, big hands and feet and a long nose.

Ron’s mediocrity despite his wizard background reminds us that success at

Hogwarts is based solely on talent and hard work, not on family connections. He lacks Harry’s gusto and charisma, but his loyalty and help are useful to Harry throughout their adventures. Ron’s willingness to be beaten up by the monstrous chess queen shows how selfless and generous he is.

“ Ron pulled out his own wand – not knowing what he was going to do he heard himself cry the first spell that came into his head : “ WingardiumLeviosa!”the troll had been knoked out (J.K.Rowling; Publish by Bloomsbury; 2014; 189)

” Hermione had become a bit more relaxed about breaking rules since Harry and

Ron had saved her from the mountain troll an she was much nicer for it.”

(J.K.Rowling; Publish by Bloomsbury; 2014; 194)

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA “ I know what you’re thinking about, Harry, that mirror. Don’t go back tonight.”

“Why not?” said Harry

“ Idunno, I’ve just got a bad feeling about it – and anyway, you’ve had too many close shaves already. Filch, Snape, and Mrs Norris are wandering around. So what if they can’t see you? What if they walk into you? What if you knock something over? I’m serious, Harry, don’t go.” (J.K.Rowling; Publish by Bloomsbury;

2014;228)

“ The white queen turned her blank face towards him. “Yes...” said Ron softly,

“it’s the only way... I’ve got to be taken.”

“NO!” Harry and Hermione shouted.

“ That’s chess!” snapped Ron. “ You’ve got to make some sacrifices! I’ll make my move and she’ll take me – that leaves you free to checkmate the king, Harry!”

(J.K.Rowling; Publish by Bloomsbury; 2014; 304)

“ First – to Mr Ronald Weasly...” said Dumbledore.

Ron went purple in the face, he looked like a radish with bad sunburn

“ For the best-played game of chess Hogwarts has seen in may years, I award

Gryffindor house fifty points.” (J.K.Rowling; Publish by Bloomsbury; 2014; 328)

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA (4) Professor Albus Dumbledore

The kind, wise head of Hogwarts. Though he is a famous wizard,

Dumbledore is as humble and adorable as his name suggests. He appears to have an almost superhuman level of wisdom, knowledge, and personal understanding, and it seems that he may have set up the whole quest for the Philosopher’s Stone so that Harry could prove himself.

“ Albus Dumbledore, currently Headmaster of Hogwarts.Considered by many the greatest wizard of modern times, Professor Dumbledore is particulary famous for his defeat of the Dark wizard Grindelwald in 1945, for the discovery of the twelve uses of dragon’s blood and his work on alchemy with his partner, Nicolas Flamel.

Professor Dumbledore enjoys chamber music and tenpin bowling.” (J.K.Rowling;

Publish by Bloomsbury; 2014; 109)

” Harry, everyone says Dumbledore’s the only one You-Know-Who was ever afraid of. With Dumbledore around, You-Know-Who won’t touch you.”

(J.K.Rowling; Publish by Bloomsbury; 2014; 280)

“ No, it isn’t,” said Harry thoughtfully. “He’s a funny man, Dumbledore. I think he sort of wanted to give me a chance. I think he knows more or less everything that goes on here, you know. I reckon he had a pretty good idea we were going to try, and instead of stopping us, he just taught us enough to help. I don’t think it was an accident he let me find how the Mirror worked. It’s almost like he thought

I had the right to face Voldemort if I could...” (J.K.Rowling; Publish by

Bloomsbury; 2014; 325)

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA “Ah, now, I’m glad you asked me that. It was one of my more brilliant ideas, and between you and me, that’s saying something. • ANTAGONIST

(5)

A great wizard gone bad.The Dark Lord.A murderer.crafty. Voldemort’s weak point is that he cannot understand love, and thus cannot touch Harry’s body, which still bears the traces of Harry’s mother’s love for her son.

“” What they’re saying,“ she pressed on, “is that last night Voldemort turned up in

Godric’s Hollow. He went to find the Potters. The rumour is that Lily and James

Potter are – are – that they’re – dead.” (J.K.Rowling; Publish by Bloomsbury;

2014; 12)

“ That’s not all. They’re saying he tried to kill the Potter’s son, Harry. But – He couldn’t. He couldn’t kill that little boy. No one knows why, or how, but they’re saying that when he couldn’t kill Harry Potter, Voldemort’s power somehow broke – and that’s why he’s gone. (J.K.Rowling; Publish by Bloomsbury;

2014;13)

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA “ After all he’s done... all the people he’s killed... he couldn’t kill a little boy? It’s just astounding... of all the things to stop him... but how in the name of heaven did

Harry survive?” (J.K.Rowling; Publish by Bloomsbury; 2014; 13)

“ Don’t be a fool,” snarled the face.”Better save your own life and join me... or you’ll meet the same end as your parents... They died begging me for mercy...”

“ LIAR!” Harry shouted suddenly.

“ Quirrell was walking backwards at him, so that Voldemort could still see him.

The evil face was now smiling.”

“ How touching...” it hissed. “I always value bravery... Yes, boy, you parents were brave... I killed your father first and he put up a courageous fight... but your mother needn’t have died... she was trying to protect you... Now give me the stone

, unless you want her to died in vain.” (J.K.Rowling; Publish by Bloomsbury;

2014; 316)

“ Then kill him, fool, and be done!” screeched Voldemort.” (J.K.Rowling; Publish by Bloomsbury; 2014; 317)

“ If there is one thing Voldemort cannot understand, it is love. He didn’t realize that love as powerfull as your mother’s for you leaves its own mark. Not a scar, no visible sign... to have been loved so deeply, even though the person who loved us is gone, will give us some protection for ever. it is in your very skin.”

(J.K.Rowling; Publish by Bloomsbury; 2014; 321)

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA (6) Draco Malfoy

A first-year student in Slytherin House and Harry's particular enemy while at Hogwarts.Described as blonde with a pale, pointed face,an arrogant student and

Harry’s nemesis.

“ Three boys entered and Harry recognized the middle one at once : it was the pale boy from Madame Malkin’s robe shop. He was looking at Harry with a lot more interest that he’d shown back in Diagon Alley.

“ Oh this is Crabbe and this is Goyle,” said the pale boy carelessly, noticing where

Harry was looking.” And my name’s Malfoy, Draco Malfoy.”

“ Think my name’s funny, do you? No need to ask who you are. My father told me all the Weasleys have red hair, freckles and more children than they can afford.”

“ You’ll soon find out some wizarding families are much better than others,

Potter. You don’t want to go making friends with the wrong sort. I can help you there.” (J.K.Rowling; Publish by Bloomsbury; 2014; 115-116)

“ Malfoy smiled nastily. I think I’ll leave it somewhere for Longbottom to collect

– how about – up a tree?” (J.K.Rowling; Publish by Bloomsbury; 2014; 158)

“ Oh, yeah?” said Malfoy, trying to sneer, but looking worried.” (J.K.Rowling;

Publish by Bloomsbury; 2014; 159)

“ Malfoy seized the package from Harry and felt it.” That’s a broomstick,” he said, throwing it back to harry with a mixture of jealousy and spite on his face. “

You’ll be for it this time, Potter, first-years aren’t allowed them. “ (J.K.Rowling;

Publish by Bloomsbury; 2014; 177)

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA “ I do feel so sory, “ said Draco Malfoy, one potions class, “ for all those people who have to stay at Hogwarts for Christmas because they’re not wanted at home.”

“ SoMalfoy, jealous and angry, had gone back to taunting Harry about having no proper family.” (J.K.Rowling; Publish by Bloomsbury; 2014; 209)

“ Someone had poked Ron in the back of the head. it was Malfoy. “ Oh, sorry,

Weasley, didn’t see you there. “ Malfoy grinned broadly at Crabbe and Goyle.”

“ See, there’s Potter, who’s got no parents, then there’s the Weasley’s, who’ve got no money – you should be on the team, Longbottom, you’ve got no brains.”

(J.K.Rowling; Publish by Bloomsbury; 2014; 239)

(7) Professor Quirrell

A stuttering and seemingly harmless man.A greedy and ambition.A man who has faked his withdrawing meekness and is actually a cold-blooded conniver.

“ A pale young man made his way forward, very nervously. One of his eyes was twitching.

“ ProfessorQuirrell!” said Hagrid.

“P-P-Potter,” stammered Professor Quirrell, grasping Harry’s hand, “c-can’t t-tell you how p-pleased I am to meet you.” (J.K.Rowling; Publish by Bloomsbury;

2014; 75)

“ The man with two faces. It was Quirrell.”

“ No, no, no. I tried to kill you. Your friend Miss Granger accidentally knocked me over as she rushed to set fire to Snape at that Quidditch match. She broke my eye contact with you. Another few seconds and I’d have got you off that broom.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA I’d have managed it before then if Snape hadn’t been muttering a counter-curse, trying to save you.” (J.K.Rowling; Publish by Bloomsbury; 2014; 310-311)

“ Quirrell’s voice tailed away. Harry was remembering his trip to Diagon Alley – how could he have been so stupid ?he’d seen Quirrell there that very day, shaken hands with him in the Leaky Cauldron. Quirrell cursed under his breath.”

(J.K.Rowling; Publish by Bloomsbury; 2014; 313)

“ Quirrell, full of hatred, greed and ambition, sharing his soul with Voldemort, could not touch you for this reason. It was agony to touch a person marked by something so good.” (J.K.Rowling; Publish by Bloomsbury; 2014; 322)

The Biography of J.K.Rowling

Joanne Rowling, CH, OBE, FRSL, FRCPE (/ˈroʊlɪŋ/; born 31 July 1965), who writes under the pen names J. K. Rowling and Robert Galbraith, is a British novelist, film and television producer, screenwriter and philanthropist, best known as the author of the Harry Potter fantasy series. The books have gained worldwide attention, won multiple awards, and sold more than 400 million copies.[1] They have become the best-selling book series in history[2] and been the basis for a series of films, over which Rowling had overall approval on the scripts[3] and was a producer on the final films in the series.[4]

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA Born in Yate, Gloucestershire, England, Rowling was working as a researcher and bilingual secretary for Amnesty International when she conceived the idea for the Harry Potter series while on a delayed train from Manchester to

London in 1990.[5] The seven-year period that followed saw the death of her mother, birth of her first child, divorce from her first husband and relative poverty until the first novel in the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, was published in 1997. There were six sequels, of which the last, Harry Potter and the

Deathly Hallows, was released in 2007. Since then, Rowling has written four books for adult readers: The Casual Vacancy (2012) and—under the pseudonym

Robert Galbraith—the crime fiction novels The Cuckoo's Calling (2013), The

Silkworm (2014) and Career of Evil (2015).[6]

Rowling has lived a "rags to riches" life story, in which she progressed from living on state benefits to multi-millionaire status within five years. She is the United Kingdom's best-selling living author, with sales in excess of £238M.[7]
