SAMPL Nicht zu unrecht wird Kärnten als das Land der Seen bezeichnet, besitzt es doch eine Vielzahl stehender Gewässer verschiedener Größe. Doch liegt der Reiz der Kärntner Seenwelt nicht so sehr in der Aus­ dehnung ihrer Seen, sondern in ihrer außerordentlichen Mannigfaltig­ keit. Die Vorzüge der Kärntner Seen liegen neben dieser reizvollen und abwechslungsreichen Landschaft in den besonderen Temperaturverhält­ nissen während des Sommers. Die hohe sommerliche Oberflächentempe­ ratur der Kärntner Seen erklärt sich aus dem Zusammenwirken von morphologischen, klimatischen und hydrographischen Gegebenheiten. Die Lage des Kärntner Seengebietes in einem allseits von Gebirgszügen um­ randeten Becken verhindert eine stärkere Luftbewegung über den Seen. Im übrigen ist aber auch die Sonneneinstrahlung relativ hoch. Ein dritter, nicht minder wichtiger Faktor ist die Tatsache, daß sämtliche Seen nur sehr schwach durchströmt werden, was vor allem dadurch zustande kommt, daß sie abseits größerer Flußsysteme gelegen, relativ kleine Einzugsgebiete haben. Aus diesen drei Gründen: geschützte Lage, geringe Luftbewegung und langsame Wassererneuerung, bildet sich im Sommer eine Wasserschichtung aus, die sich beispielsweise von den Seen der Nordalpen durch eine besondere thermische Stabilität auszeichnet. Be­ kanntlich wird der Wasserkörper eines Sees in drei Stockwerke unter­ teilt; in ein Epilimnion (sommerliche Warmwasserschicht an der Ober­ fläche), ein Metalimnion (thermische Sprungschicht) und ein Hypolimnion (kalte Tiefenschicht). Das Epilimnion der Kärntner Seen ist infolge des Dichteunterschiedes von den darunter liegenden Wassermassen deutlich abgesetzt. Dies hat zur Folge, daß während dieses Schichtungsbildes ein Austausch zwischen epilimnischem und hypolimnischem Wasser sehr *) Dieser Beitrag bezieht sich auf den Stand Frühjahr 1973.
