international cricket host.
Brisbane has been totally snubbed as a venue for the Women’s T20 World Cup in 2020 and will host just four matches in the men’s World Cup.
It has done so badly that Geelong’s Kardinia Park (six men’s games), Hobart’s Bellerive Oval (eight games) and Canberra’s Manuka Oval (five games) will host more games than the Gabba even though Brisbane’s will be of superior quality.

Brisbane will host a group of women’s teams for general practice and trial matches but the fact that no state will host fewer tournament games than Queensland is a chastening bottom line.
Sydney (14 games) will host almost four times as many games as Brisbane.
Assistant Minister for Tourism Industry Development, Meaghan Scanlon, tried to dress mutton up as lamb at a shallow, unconvincing press conference on Tuesday by urging Queensland fans to support the women’s trial games because “it is really important to know we are supporting women in sport.”
When you are reduced to spruiking trial matches you really have hit the bottom

of the barrel.
If the Government genuinely felt it was “really important” to support women’s sport surprising it did not try and get one of their tournament matches.
State governments are asked to bid for World Cup matches and the weak effort of the Labor Government is reminiscent of the coalition’s almost non-existent bid for matches in their 2015 World Cup, which left Brisbane’s big game a washed out one-dayer against Bangladesh.
“Obviously they are really competitive these bids, unfortunately we were not able to get that (women’s games) but I want to encourage as many people as possible to come along and support these matches,” Scanlon said.

Queensland’s poor result in the World T20 bidding process follows unofficial confirmation Brisbane will miss out on one of four Tests against India next summer and get one of two lesser games against Sri Lanka in January.
The Gabba has been left behind in the stadium wars by redeveloped grounds in Adelaide and Perth though the state’s politicians still live in denial with Queensland tourism minister Kate Jones saying in a press release “Queenslanders know the Gabba is the best venue in the world to watch http;//www.couriermail.com.au/sport/cricket/2020-world-t20-geel...han-gabba-as--venues/news-story/9d00ac10520a997127575f8bd791e31dPage 3 of 4 2020 World T20 tournament; Gabba ; Assistant Minister for Tourism industry Development Meaghan Scanlon | The Courier-Mail 7/3/18, 2:24 pm
cricket.”
This is at odds with the view of Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland who rates it the fifth best ground in Australia, never mind the world.
