När jag skriver detta står sommaren för dörren och det är snart dags att trycka årets upplaga av Sjuttonhundratal. Detta nummer har anförtrotts en gästredaktion av tre litteraturvetare och en retoriker i Uppsala, doktorand Tim Berndtsson, filo- sofie doktor Annie Mattsson, professor Otto Fischer och professor Ann Öhrberg, som med hjälp av medförfattare utvecklar ämnet 1700-talets handskriftskulturer. Numret inleds med redaktörernas övergripande tankar och informativa forsk- ningsbakgrund och följs av fem tematiska artiklar skrivna av Tim Berndtsson, Helga Müllneritsch, Liv Helene Willumsen, Randi Skjelmo och Ruth Hemstad. De diskuterar vad det innebär att läsa och skriva handskrivna texter när trycket också fanns som möjlighet. Hur uppfattades manuskriptet av 1700-talets samtid? Just detta århundrade var en övergångsperiod till vår moderna tid, då handskriften blev något exklusivt och ofta hemligt/personligt medan trycket mångfaldigades till allt lägre kostnad. Artiklarna behandlar avslutningen på en lång historisk pe- riod då manuskript och tryckta skrifter samexisterade i samlingar och i läsarnas medvetande på ett mer integrerat sätt än idag. Bara drygt tvåhundrafemtio år har förflutit, men nu betraktas manuskript och tryckta skrifter på ett självklart sätt som två skilda medier. De katalogiseras i olika databaser, bevaras ofta på olika institutioner och utforskas av varsitt specia- listskrå. Detta temanummer aktualiserar en diskussion om vilken betydelse detta får för vår kunskap om 1700-talet. Vad händer med analysen av textligt innehåll när forskningen har blivit avhängig digital katalogisering som bortser från pro- veniens, ordning och form – förutom just det faktum huruvida texten är tryckt eller inte? Många forskare delar säkert den erfarenhet som jag nyligen gjorde, nämligen de besvärliga följderna av den kategoriska uppdelningen mellan tryckt och hand- skriven text. Det var et utkast til Oslo katedralskoles historie fra ca. 1150 til omkring 1800, skrevet av Einar Aas (1857–1941). Den som tok initiativet til å gjøre noe med dette var Anders Langangen, pensjonert lektor ved skolen, og gjennom mange år en drivkraft for beskjeftigelse med skolens historie. I 2012 fikk han med seg to tidligere kolleger, Hilde Sejersted og Tore Haakensen, samt Arild Eilif Aasbo, et barnebarn av Aas. Gjen- nom to år arbeidet denne gruppen med å omforme håndskrif- tet til en digital versjon, og, ettersom arbeidet skred frem: med å gjennomgå teksten. Det var på dette tidspunktet at Vibeke Roggen ble invitert med i redaksjonen; hun er førsteamanu- ensis i latin ved Universitetet i Oslo med forskningsarbeider relatert til Oslo katedralskole i eldre tid. Manuskriptet som redaksjonen har hatt som utgangspunkt for sitt arbeid, bærer preg av å være et utkast. Det er tydelig mindre gjennomarbeidet enn Aas’ publiserte skolehistorier: Stavanger katedralskoles historie 1243–1826 (1925) og Kristi- ansands katedralskoles historie 1642–1908 (1932), foruten Kristia- nia katedralskoles historie i det nittende århundre (1935).

Gradvis ble det vage formet til et gjennomførbart prosjekt. Etter to års dypdykk i spissfindig emosjonshistorisk teori/metodologi er det på tide å takke alle som har holdt ut med en historikeraspirant halvt til stede i bøkenes verden og halvt i den virkelige. Først og fremst må jeg takke kona for oppmuntring og støtte hele veien, og for å ha lest korrektur på utallige utkast.     Notes from Val Hvidston, Box 2751, Tisdale, Saskatchewan, Canada S0E 1T0 The following story “They Came From Kviteseid” is a collection of stories, letters and news articles about Houkom and Kirkebø families from Kviteseid, Norway. Of particular interest to me is the story about Ole Bjørnsen Haukom, my great-great-great-great grandfather. Originally these were all written in Norwegian and Dordi Round of California spent considerable time translating them into English. I first learned of Dordi’s books “They Came From Kviteseid - Part I” and “They Came From Kviteseid - Part II” (referred to as TCFK - Part I and II) in 2001 while reading the delightful book “Here Come the Norwegians” written by Carol Schwinkendorf Hansen (also an Ole Bjørnsen descendant). I emailed to Carol and asked her how I could get a copy of TCFK - Part I and II. Carol wrote back and gave me Dordi Round’s mailing address. I wrote to Dordi explaining who I was, a descendant of Ole Bjørnsen) and asked if she had any copies of her books. She did not and at the age of 80 did not find it easy to arrange to have her own book copied however she offered to contact Helen Forbes (another Ole Bjørnsen descendant by his third wife Torgjerd - Helen is a good friend to Dordi) and see if Helen could do that for me. A few months later, I was extremely pleased to receive my very own copy of TCFK - Part I and II. Dordi is an interesting person. She has no Norwegian blood but she calls Norway her “Shangri- la”.

    “Der blev dygtig politiseret…” Politisk kulturdannelse i Øvre Telemark rundt 1814 Gunnar Bolstad 12/2010 1 ENGLISH SUMMARY This essay is about the formative processes that paved the way for the political participation among farmers from the Norwegian county Telemark before and after 1814, when Norway first earned its independence from Denmark with its own constitution and shortly after succumbed to a union with Sweden. The essay focuses on the careers of four different farmers; Talleiv Huvestad, Aasmund Norgaard, Ole Bjørnsen and Ole Blom, who all contributed, each in their own way, to the development of a strong political culture among the farmers. The theoretical perspective is based on theories on social networks, as they are originally expressed by the American sociologist Walter W. Powell, further developed by a group of Swedish historians at the University of Uppsala. The essay is inspired by the on-going research project at the Volda University College on the connection between “the two cultures” of peasant farmers and the local elite. My ambition has been to show how the four agrarian politicians made both allies and enemies with top civil servants and upper class merchants, both locally and nationally. They don’t seem to have been severely restrained by the paternalistic system that characterised the society at the time. A local parish priest, the nationally renowned poet Jens Zetlitz, played an important role as a cultural and political ally of at least two of the four farmers in the essay. While the elite’s mantra was to avoid “politicising”, the farmers’ only option was to do the opposite: Fighting against nobility and in favour of a fair distribution of military service and other societal duties, they had to discard the elite’s established political and cultural norms in order to succeed with their claims.

These solutions ultimately transformed a region of conflict or negative peace, to a zone of positive peace. The thesis will answer the following questions: 1) How have the solutions that underlie the Nordic Peace transcended causes for conflict? And 2) are there universal potentials in the Nordic solutions? This will be elucidated through an in depth analysis of three historical cases that would shape and transform the region after 1814, the year marking the onset of the Nordic Peace and its subsequent paradigm shift.
