Since then, more than two decades have elapsed and the location of the event has been changed to the immense and representative new congress centre “darmstadtium”. After having received close to 1000 experts at ISAL 2017, it would be a great pleasure to welcome international designers, engi- neers, scientists and decision makers in automotive lighting industry at the ISAL 2019. A lot of research and development focuses on communication between automat- ed vehicles and other road users as well as on high resolution adaptive high beam to improve the visibility distance and general driving comfort for front lighting. Further research topics include adaptive rear lights to minimize dis- comfort and maximize road safety for following cars. In the meantime, new challenges for the automotive lighting community arise in the form of energy efficient lighting for purely electric vehicles and lighting design and functions for autonomous driving. ISAL 2019 will surely encourage the exchange between lighting engineers, road safety experts and regulative bodies. They will have the opportunity to present the most recent results of research and development to continue the established traditions of this conference to be able to promote a bright future for automo- tive lighting. Laboratory of Lighting Technology The Technische Universität Darmstadt was founded in 1877 and established the worldwide first professorial chair for electrical engineering in 1882. One of the first lectures included electrical lighting technology. In this tradition, the Laboratory of Lighting Technology was founded in 1956. Prof. Jainski set an emphasis on traffic lighting. Prof. Schmidt-Clausen succee- ded Prof. Jainski in 1982 as head of the laboratory and, through successful rese- arch, strengthened its national and international reputation. It was him who realized the need for an international conference for automotive lighting and founded a new international symposium called “Progress in Automotive Lighting”. Since the appointment of Prof. Tran Quoc Khanh in October 2006, the Laborato- ry of Lighting Technology has gained even more renown in the field of road lighting. Many studies in the field of automotive lighting have been conducted since and published in relevant media. 4 ISAL 2019 Steering Board Dr.-Ing. C. Allgeier, OSRAM Continental GmbH, GER D. While ASEAN is a prime example of intraregional production networks, supply chains that connect ASEAN and India have not been studied indepth. Therefore, this paper investigates the Indian automotive industry, which is composed of automobile original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and parts and components producers, and other supply chain connections to the neighbouring ASEAN region. This study is structured as follows. First, we will take a look at the historic development of the automotive industry in India, as it provides the context for the development of companies and their capabilities that are crucial determinants for their ability to join supply chains. The investigation will not 51 be limited to Indian firms because as case studies of the ASEAN region forcefully demonstrate, foreign OEMs and parts suppliers may use developing and emerging markets as specialised production bases of their global and regional supply chains.
