HOLY CROSS CRUSADER ATHLETES OF THE YEAR 1990-1991 Ann Lambiotte Joe Segretti We're not sure what the six Crusader Athletes of the Year have in common, but we do know that they've provided the campus with many thrills over the last year: JOE SEGRETTI was simply one one of the best running backs to ever break tackles on the Hill. He coasted to the Patriot League Most Valuable Player Award; rushed for his third straight 1,000-yard season (a Patriot League leading 1143 yards); and rushed for the second-most yards ever at Holy Cross (3,461). Joe has signed as a free agent with the Super Bowl Champion New York Giants and will hopefully make the team come fall. CRAIG CALLAHAN followed proudly in the tradition of great Holy Cross linebackers like Rob McGovern and Chris Maruca, as he was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year. Craig was named to five post-season teams and averaged a mind- boggling total of 14.2 sacks a game. Hopefully he will catch on with the New Orleans Saints, with whom he signed as a free agent this week. DAVE LEONARD is capping an incredible career with another stellar season on the mound for H.C. baseball team. As of Thursday, he owned six of the teams eleven wins, placed second in the Patriot League for strikeouts and ERA, and had secured Mary Helen Walker Dave Leonard Athlete of the Week honors twice in the Patriot League. The major league baseball draft is in May, eft and many major league teams could do a lot worse. JIM NAIRUS matured into a force in his senior year for the Purple. Averaging over 18 points and eight rebounds a game, Jim was named Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year; he is also a potential second-round pick in the June NBA Draft. No one will forget the clutch threes he buried against Boston College and Lehigh, and even if the NBA doesn't work out, maybe a career in medicine will. MARY HELEN WALKER was, pound for pound, sex for sex, the best athlete on the Hill this year. In her first injury-free season, Mary Helen almost 1? single-handedly brought Coach Gibbons and company their first NCAA win ever, pushing the team past Maryland in a memorable game at the Hart Center. Says Gibbons, "I've never coached a better player." ANN LAMBIOTTE represents everything we wanted from the Crusader Athlete of the Year. After a season-ending knee injury in the Patriot League Championships, Ann improbably came back to notch ten points against Auburn in the second round of the NCAA Tournament despite almost no mobility from her ravaged knee. It was easily the most stunning and courageous performance of a memorable year. Craig Callahan Jim Nairus
