A Tribute to the Life of Jack Grayburn. Preface
A Tribute to The Life of Jack Grayburn. Preface. To be President of our great rugby club is an honour and a privilege, especially so when one considers the many illustrious members in our 90 odd years of history. We live now in very different times. The first members of Chiltern RFC will have experienced, some at first hand the almost unbearably tragic events of the World War 1. As the club grew in the 1930s the shadow of war once again fell over Europe and men such as Jack Grayburn knew what could befall them should another conflict unfold. It is difficult for us now to comprehend the sacrifices that war dictates, the destruction of families, communities, a way of life. But those Chiltern rugby players in the late 1930s must have known what might be expected of them, and must have trusted that they would rise to the challenge, and must have known that some of them would not return. Our honours board at the club has 22 names on it, a club with perhaps 60 playing members in 1939. This ratio speaks for itself, a number that is shocking and humbling; and however many times this refrain is repeated it is no less true: they died so that we might have a future, a future to enjoy the manifold benefits of a good life in a free society. And surely each one of those Chiltern players who went to war and did not return would rejoice that our club continues and is in fine shape, upholding the same values, embodying all that is best in sport and comradeship. -

Involvement of Partner City Wrocław/Oleśnica World War II
Involvement of partner city Wrocław/Oleśnica World War II Author: Piotr Michałowski 20.02.2016 Poland, the liberated state as created in 1918 after the end of the WWI, was dreamed of for many years. When it appeared, the happiness didn’t last for a long time. Poland was in that time deeply into inside conflicts and when building the governing system it was romantic to think that in an environment of growing powers, like the Third Reich or Soviet Russia, the country would be left untouched. The German philosopher Edmund Husserl would say that Poland was deep in the Lifeworld (Lebenswelt) -sometimes defined as a bubble- that it is hard to put on an equal rule with the others. In his ‘Crisis of the European Science and Transcendental Phenomenology’ (published in 1936) he wrote: “In whatever way we may be conscious of the world as a universal horizon, as a coherent universe of existing objects, we -each “I-the-man” and all of us together- belong to the world as though living with one another in the world; and the world is the world, valid for our consciousness as existing precisely through this ‘living together’”1. World War II started on the 1st of September, 1939 with an attack on the Polish harbour in Gdańsk in the west and with the bombing of the city of Wieluń in central Poland. The country was invaded by Nazi Germany from the West and on the 17 th of September from the East by Soviet Russia. The second date, after The War ended, would be forbidden to mention due to Soviet propaganda. -

Luftwaffe Airfields 1935-45 Russia (incl. Ukraine, Belarus & Bessarabia) By Henry L. deZeng IV Kharkov-Rogan I Photo credit: U.S. National Archives, Photographic and Cartographic Division.; taken 14 Sept. 1941. Kharkov-Rogan I was built in 1930 for use as a military flight school. It had 8 medium and large aircraft hangars and 1 very large repair hangar, approx. 40 permanent barrack buildings, 3 workshops, admin buildings and storage structures, an oval athletic track and other facilities all grouped along the W boundary and SW corner of the landing area. There were about 10 additional structures along the S boundary that may have been for aircraft servicing and stores. Additionally, there were 22 blast bays for twin-engine and single-engine aircraft spaced along the W and S boundaries of the landing area. A separate supply dump with its own rail spur was approx. 1 km S of the airfield. Nearly all of these buildings had been destroyed or badly damaged by 1944, the majority of them blown up by the retreating Germans. Edition: February 2020 Airfields Russia (incl. Ukraine, Belarus & Bessarabia) Introduction Conventions 1. For the purpose of this reference work, “Russia” generally means the territory belonging to the country in September 1939, the month of the German attack on Poland and the generally accepted beginning of World War II, including that part of eastern Poland (i.e., Belarus, Belorussia, Weissruthenien) and western Ukraine annexed by the Soviet Union on 29 September 1939 following the USSR’s invasion of Poland on 17 September 1939. Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina were seized by the USSR between 26 June and 3 July 1940.
