A Tribute to The Life of Jack Grayburn. Preface. To be President of our great rugby club is an honour and a privilege, especially so when one considers the many illustrious members in our 90 odd years of history. We live now in very different times. The first members of Chiltern RFC will have experienced, some at first hand the almost unbearably tragic events of the World War 1. As the club grew in the 1930s the shadow of war once again fell over Europe and men such as Jack Grayburn knew what could befall them should another conflict unfold. It is difficult for us now to comprehend the sacrifices that war dictates, the destruction of families, communities, a way of life. But those Chiltern rugby players in the late 1930s must have known what might be expected of them, and must have trusted that they would rise to the challenge, and must have known that some of them would not return. Our honours board at the club has 22 names on it, a club with perhaps 60 playing members in 1939. This ratio speaks for itself, a number that is shocking and humbling; and however many times this refrain is repeated it is no less true: they died so that we might have a future, a future to enjoy the manifold benefits of a good life in a free society. And surely each one of those Chiltern players who went to war and did not return would rejoice that our club continues and is in fine shape, upholding the same values, embodying all that is best in sport and comradeship. -

BIOGRAPHY UNITED STATES AIR FORCE MAJOR DUSTIN S. PUETT Maj Dustin S. Puett is Chief, Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) Flight Systems Requirements Branch, Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC), Barksdale Air Force Base (AFB), La. As Branch Chief of ICBM Flight Systems Requirements Maj Puett Serves as command lead for future ICBM flight systems. Additionally, he plans, integrates, and executes multiple program interfaces to ensure program success. He leads division weapons & tactics efforts and is responsible advising leaders on ICBM tactics, techniques, and procedures. Furthermore, the Major is also responsible for developing all ICBM system training plans and strategies. Maj Puett is a 2007 graduate from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology. He has served in various leadership and staff positions during his career which include ICBM Combat Crew Commander, ICBM Weapons and Tactics Planner and Trainer, a tour as a Flight Commander and Division Chief at Squadron Officer College, and an assignment to Air Force Global Strike Command where he served as Deputy Chief, Strategic Studies and Wargaming Branch. Prior to his current assignment he served as the Deputy Chief, Strategic Basing and Total Force Integration Branch, Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC), Barksdale Air Force Base (AFB), La. His wartime experience includes a tour as the Aide-de-Camp for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) & 9th Air Expeditionary Task Force - Afghanistan Commander at Headquarters, Resolute Support (NATO), Kabul, Afghanistan. He was responsible for the planning, coordinating, and execution of the Commander’s travel. Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base Historical Brief Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base is a Royal Thai Air Force facility, which is also being used as a civil airport. It is located near the city of Ubon Ratchathani, in the Ubon Ratchathani Province, about 250 miles northeast of Bangkok. During the Vietnam War it was a front-line base of the United States Air Force. The host wing at Ubon was the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing, arriving in November 1966. Comprising the flying units were four F-4D "Phantom" tactical fighter squadrons. Also assigned to the wing was the 16th Special Operations Squadron, which flew AC-130 "Spectre" gunships. The 13th Bomb Squadron was assigned from September 1970 until April 1972, flying the B-57G The 13th flew mostly night interdiction missions against North Vietnamese truck traffic on the Ho Chi Minh trail. At the peak of operations in 1969, the units assigned to Ubon RTAFB were the following: Host Unit - 8th Tactical Fighter Wing • 16th Special Operations Squadron - 4 AC-130As, 1 AC-123K, 7 C-130As • 25th, 433rd, 435th Tactical Fighter Squadron - 70 RF-4Ds • Det 3, 38th Air Rescue And Recovery Squadron (ARRS) - 2 HH-43s, 12 O-2s • Tenant units at Ubon RTAFB included the 23rd Tactical Air Support Squadron flying the OV- 10. The 23rd's "Rustic FAC's" flew missions in support of ground forces, interdiction missions and armed convoy support. Another tenant, the 3rd Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Group performed a vital support role in crash rescue, aircrew recovery and evacuation missions. -

In contrast, working in cooperation with ground forces, as tactical forces later did, was viewed as a subordinate role to the army‘s infantry and therefore upheld notions that the AAC was little more than an alternate means of delivering artillery. When President Franklin Delano Roosevelt called for a significantly expanded air arsenal and war plan in 1939, AAC strategists saw an opportunity to make an impression. Eager to exert their sovereignty, and sold on the efficacy of heavy bombers, AAC leaders answered the president‘s call with a strategic air doctrine and war plans built around the use of heavy bombers. The AAC, renamed the Army Air Forces (AAF) in 1941, eventually put the tactical squadrons into play in Europe, and thus tactical leaders spent 1943 and the beginning of 1944 preparing tactical air units for three missions: achieving and maintaining air superiority, isolating the battlefield, and providing air support for ground forces. -

Dedicated to the men and women of the USAF past, present, and future, it records significant events and achievements from 18 September 1947 through 9 April 1997. Since its establishment, the USAF has played a significant role in the events that have shaped modem history. Initially, the reassuring drone of USAF transports announced the aerial lifeline that broke the Berlin blockade, the Cold War’s first test of wills. In the tense decades that followed, the USAF deployed a strategic force of nuclear- capable intercontinental bombers and missiles that deterred open armed conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union. During the Cold War’s deadly flash points, USAF jets roared through the skies of Korea and Southeast Asia, wresting air superiority from their communist opponents and bringing air power to the support of friendly ground forces. In the great global competition for the hearts and minds of the Third World, hundreds of USAF humanitarian missions relieved victims of war, famine, and natural disaster. The Air Force performed similar disaster relief services on the home front. Over Grenada, Panama, and Libya, the USAF participated in key contingency actions that presaged post-Cold War operations. In the aftermath of the Cold War the USAF became deeply involved in constructing a new world order. As the Soviet Union disintegrated, USAF flights succored the populations of the newly independent states. -
