Chapter III
My Internship Activities
In this chapter, I would like to explain my internship activities at Wonderful Solo.
My activities are divided into two, main activity and additional activities. This chapter
also explains about the problems that I faced during the internship and the solutions.
Activity in General I conducted the internship at Wonderful Solo started from November 24 until December 24, 2018. The workdays at Wonderful Solo are from Monday until Saturday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. I did the internship activity under Mr. Bias Rio’s supervision. During the internship I did activities, those were main activity and additional activity. The main activity was translating articles of Wonderful Solo’s website and Instagram posts. While the additional activity was reviewing the promotion location. In a month I translated 28 articles. The articles were about Solo, including food, destination location, hotel, shopping center etc. The result of my translation will be uploaded later when the website is ready to go full bilingual.
The articles that are on the Wonderful Solo website are not only written by one person, but by many authors. I classified existing articles according to the theme to
make it easier for me to translate later. By grouping it according to the theme, I did not
need to go back and forth in finding the same reference when I found difficult words
and terms.
Some of my translations were checked by my friends while the rest of them
were checked by staff. When some of my translations were incorrect I had to revise my
translation. After the translations have been revised, I submitted it to the Wonderful
Solo. Translations that have been received will be used later when the Wonderful Solo
website has a bilingual interface.
I also had some problems while translating articles at the Wonderful Solo. In
translating artciles, aside from looking for the sources on the internet or the books I also
discussing it with my friends and staffs in Wonderful Solo. In order to produce the
accurate, acceptable, and readable, cooperationcommit to userbetween staff and interns is needed.

The Tools Used for Translation Activity
Laptop
During conducting the internship, laptop was an important tool in finishing
my translation. I used laptop to retype the articles. The results of my translations
were kept in a folder of my laptop.
Dictionaries
Dictionaries were very helpful during the translation process. When I did not know the meaning of words, I could use the dictionary to find out the meaning. I used different dictionaries, such as Meriam Webster, and KBBI (Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia) from my laptop. The Internet (Interconnected Network) With the Internet I can find meaning of the words that I do not understand. In the articles that I have translated, there are many new terms that are not in the dictionary.
The Main Activity Process The main activity in Wonderful Solo was translating articles on the Wonderful Solo website and Instagram posts. The total number of articles reaches seventy-five. Thus, each person got about twenty articles. After determining which article was my part, I began to translate the articles. According to Nababan (1999:25), process of translation is in three steps: 1) analysis of source language text; 2) transferring the
meaning; and 3) restructuring.
1. Analyzing the source text
The first step when I did the translation was analyzing the article. This step was
taken to understand the message in the article. I did the step by reading the whole article
before starting to translate it. By understanding what the author wants I will be able to
easily translate the articles without losing their purpose.
Table 3.1 Example of analyzing
Source Text Target Text

sapi (bagian dalam tubuh sapi). Di situlah
letak ‘Kere’-nya. Kok bisa?
In this step I found the term Sate Kere which is satay made from tempeh
gembus, but in this sentence it was explained that Sate Kere in here is made from meat
and innards. If I did not analyze the text then I would assume that Sate Kere here is a
satay made from tempeh gembus.
2. Transferring the meaning
After analyzed the article, the next step was transferring the meaning. Before translating the whole text, I highlighted the difficult words first. After highlighted the difficult words, I looked the meaning of the difficult words. I used the dictionary and internet to help me transfer the meaning from source language to target language.
Table 3.2 Example of transferring Source Text Target Text Soto daging atau soto ayam dari mangkok There is Soto Sapi (Soto with beef) and kecil sampai piringan, tinggal pesan saja Soto Ayam (Soto with chicken) from small sesuai selera. Istimewanya di Soto Seger to big plates which you can order as you Hj. Fatimah ada lauk yang disajikan wish. The special thing about Soto Seger berjajar di meja sak maceme. Jajanan Hj. ati, sate telur puyuh dan kawan-kawannya. cracker, chicken satay, liver satay, quail
egg satay, and etc.
In Table 3.2, I used the borrowing technique to translate soto. Soto is a typical
Indonesian food that cannot be found outside the country. The food similar to soto is
clear soup, but the main ingredients for making clear soup with is very different from
soto, thus if I translated it into clear soup, people who read can misunderstand it.

In the Table 3.3, the first step I did was translated the paragraph directly into target language. The technique I used in this text was literal technique because the source text is easy to understand and the structure is also not messy.
3. Rechecking and restructuring After I finished transferring, I checked the results of the translation again. I asked my friends and staffs to check the results of my translation. I also restructured the translation in order to make the readers easily to understand the translation. Table 3.4 Example of rechecking and restructuring Source Text Target Text Edited Target Text Kampung Jamu Nguter Kampung Jamu Nguter have Kampung Jamu Nguter

Jamu is also a typical Indonesian drink that cannot be found outside the country. By adding a detailed description of what is jamu, the reader is expected to understand the text more easily. In sentence “Beragam merk jamu rumahan dengan kode usaha departemen kesehatan dan industri kecil banyak ditawarkan” I changed the translation of “kode

“licensed” because the term licensed is used more frequently in the target text..
Problems during translating articles
When translating articles in Wonderful Solo I faced several problems, such as
difficult words, food names, and informal words.
1. Difficult words
When translating articles in Wonderful Solo I faced several problems, such as
difficult words, food names, and informal words. To solve the problems, I used
dictionary to find the meaning, searched the words in internet, and discussed with my
friend and staffs.

In this case, gowes is another word for cycler. The origin of gowes is not clear,
some said it comes from the go-west word and some also said that the word comes from the Java language yowes which means never mind. After I asked the staff and my friends, they told me to translate Pecinta Gowes into Cycling Lovers.
2. Food Names When translating the article in Wonderful Solo, I found the names of food, which I'm not sure if there is an English version. Table 3.6 Example of Food Names Source Text Target Text Es kepal milo, jajanan yang baru saja hits Es Kepal Milo, the drink that recently masih bertengger didepan gang, went viral, laid in front of alleys, menyambut kami. welcomed us.

In this case, I found the word Es Kepal Milo in source text language but I did not
find any Es Kepal Milo in western cultcommiture. Es to Kepal user Milo can be translated to Fist-Like perpustakaan.uns.ac.id digilib.uns.ac.id12
Milo Ice. Because either the Es Kepal Milo or Fist-like Milo Ice are both strange words
to outsiders, I decided to use Es Kepal Milo.
In the next paragraph I also found the word es buah which if translated would be
fruit ice. When I found out what fruit ice is, I think fruit ice is different from es buah in
Indonesia. Fruit ice in another country is a drink made with fruit, but you cannot see the
shape of the fruit anymore, while es buah is a drink consist of chopped fruits. After I
discussed with my friends, I decided to use es buah.
3. Informal Words When translating articles in Wonderful Solo I found informal words of Indonesia language that could not be translated. Table 3.7 Example of Informal Words Source Text Target Text Wuih, gimana rasanya ya ikan Salmon Mmm, how’s the taste of salmon cooked diolah dengan ala barbeque disajikan in barbeque style and barbeque sauce? So dengan saos steak. Uenak, pastinya Guys. tasty of course! In this case the word Wuih and Uenak are informal words that are not in KBBI, especially Wuih. While Uenak in KKBI is the informal word of enak (delicious). After looked into some food blog, I found out that instead of delicious the term tasty is used more frequently.
I translated Wuih into “Mmm” because in target text “Mmm” is an expression of
delight when tasting something delicious.
Translating Instagram Posts from Indonesia to English
Aside from translated the articles in Wonderful Solo Website I also have duty to
translated the text that would be posted in Instagram every day. The post is usually
accompanied by at least one picture to attract the reader's attention. In addition, I also
translated promotion content that will be posted on Instagram. Below are the examples
of the translation:

Additional Activities Besides translated articles and Instagram post, I also have additional activity.
The activity was reviewing restaurants or hotels. The review was done with my friend
and the staffs. The review was done to promote the place, in accordance with previous
agreement. The promotion package has many variations. Some of the package are:
Instagram, Instagram + website, Instagram + website + YouTube, and company profile.
After the review was done, the copywriter will write a review of visited location.
When I was there, the finished review was then translated into English language.
Afterward, the review will be posted on Instagram, Website or YouTube.
In the additional activates, we went to various place, such as MadBottle Cafe,
Laksana Inn, and Ayam Geprak Nori Solo.
