ACROSS WORKS and VREME FILM STUDIO Present Documentary Film
ACROSS WORKS and VREME FILM STUDIO present documentary film by Stefan Valdobrev short synopsis Following the quest of a man's awkward dream to be named after his favorite football club, the film director brings us close to a Bulgarian builder and his memorable mates, and creates a moving portrait of contemporary Bulgaria with its bewildered and confused people, so disappointed by the life in the country that they migrate to their own substitute reality. The journey starts in Svishtov, a small town on the bank of the river Danube, tells the story of the protagonist's struggle with the authorities, leads us all the way to Old Trafford Stadium, where he meets his idol, the Manchester United top-striker Dimitar Berbatov, and ends up back home, raising questions about identity, about who we are and who we want to be. full synopsis A single 48-year-old man from a small town on the bank of the river Danube lives alone with his mother and his cat called Beckham. The only thing of meaning in his life is his love for a football club. He is one of the millions who become significant through the successes of their idols. But there's something special about him: his name. In 1999 Manchester United are playing Bayern Munich in the Champions League final and are losing 1:0 in the 89th minute. On the verge of despair, this passionate Bulgarian fan declares that if his team somehow manage to win the match, he will change his name to Manchester United. In the next two minutes the "red devils" do the impossible, scoring two goals to win the trophy, and that's how Marin Zdravkov Levidzhov starts his ten- year odyssey through court, churches and authorities, hoping that one day he will wake up as Manchester United Zdravkov Levidzhov. -

Dimitar Mockup Foldout
DIMITAR ANAKIEV AT THE TOMBSTONE KRAJ NADGROBNIKA DIMITAR ANAKIEV AT THE TOMBSTONE KRAJ NADGROBNIKA HAIKU ILLUSTRATIONS BY DRAGAN PERIC´ RED MOON PRESS 2002 FOREWORD The 23 poems collected in At the Tombstone were writ- ten in the summer and autumn of 2001 in the village of Groznatovci which is located in the foothills near Mount Gromada (local name Vrtop) on the border between Serbia and Bulgaria. I spent my idyllic youth in this natural wilderness where my father was born and ultimately buried. This collection is dedicated to him, as well as to the Balkan tradition which is still alive and well. The pagan and animistic spirit of these people, living outside the ken of modern civilization and deeply connected to their mythology and to nature, interwoven with the spiritu- ality they find in the Orthodox Church, and mixed with the remnants of Turkish customs left behind from the times of the Ottoman occupation, were strong and continual stimuli to me. The classical haiku form of 5-7-5 syllables seemed to me nec- essary to express such complex feelings, both epic and lyric, as well as providing the structure wherein I could make us of local topics, both seasonal and non-seasonal. I began my investigation of the Balkan’s cultural top- ics for potential application in poetry in 1995, supported through the work and personal help of Hiroshi Yamasaki Vukelic and Srba Mitrovic, and have continued it through col- laboration´ with Ban’ya Natsuishi.´ It pleases me to be able to share some Balkan topics here with an English readership, and for this I must thank Jim Kacian for his willingness to follow the poetic and cultural ethos specific to these Balkan poems in his excellent English translations. -

A HISTORY of the FESTIVAL BAND According to Stefan Kitanov - Kita
A HISTORY OF THE FESTIVAL BAND according to Stefan Kitanov - Kita I met Peter Georgiev – Pesheto in 1988. We were sitting together during the rehearsals of the “Sredets” choir. We were both tenors. I joined the choir in the autumn, soon after my daughter Ana was born. In the spring of 1989, the choir went on a tour in Greece. Pesheto said that he would bring his guitar. Then I knew he was a musician! I took my guitar too. In the bus, on the way to Athens, we prepared the first repertoair of Kita and Pesheto and we performed it at Omonia Square, right after the bus arrived there. After the 10th of November 1989 Pesheto went to play in restaurants in Norway and I went on the street and became one of the first buskers in Sofia after the democratic changes. It was an incredible time. In the beginning I played in underpasses, because it was cold – the underpass in front of the “Pliska” hotel was the warmest. In the spring, my favourite sport was in front of a bench on “Vitosha” blvd., on the corner with “Neofit Rilski” str. Then Pesheto came back and joined me. We played in the underpass of “Pliska”, the National Palace of Culture and Eagle’s Bridge, on “My spot” at Vitosha blvd., in front of the “Sveta Nedelya” church... Several times we were joined by the Danish clown Luna, with whom we made a short video in front of the National Palace of Culture. It was the end of april-may 1992.
