    ACROSS WORKS and VREME FILM STUDIO present documentary film by Stefan Valdobrev short synopsis Following the quest of a man's awkward dream to be named after his favorite football club, the film director brings us close to a Bulgarian builder and his memorable mates, and creates a moving portrait of contemporary Bulgaria with its bewildered and confused people, so disappointed by the life in the country that they migrate to their own substitute reality. The journey starts in Svishtov, a small town on the bank of the river Danube, tells the story of the protagonist's struggle with the authorities, leads us all the way to Old Trafford Stadium, where he meets his idol, the Manchester United top-striker Dimitar Berbatov, and ends up back home, raising questions about identity, about who we are and who we want to be. full synopsis A single 48-year-old man from a small town on the bank of the river Danube lives alone with his mother and his cat called Beckham. The only thing of meaning in his life is his love for a football club. He is one of the millions who become significant through the successes of their idols. But there's something special about him: his name. In 1999 Manchester United are playing Bayern Munich in the Champions League final and are losing 1:0 in the 89th minute. On the verge of despair, this passionate Bulgarian fan declares that if his team somehow manage to win the match, he will change his name to Manchester United. In the next two minutes the "red devils" do the impossible, scoring two goals to win the trophy, and that's how Marin Zdravkov Levidzhov starts his ten- year odyssey through court, churches and authorities, hoping that one day he will wake up as Manchester United Zdravkov Levidzhov.

    Post-Socialist Blues Within Real Existing Capitalism: Anti-Communism, Neoliberalisation, Fascism by Bozhin Stiliyanov Traykov A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Sociology University of Alberta © Bozhin Stiliyanov Traykov, 2020 Abstract This project draws on Alex William’s (2020) contribution to Gramscian studies with the concept of complex hegemony as an emergent, dynamic and fragile process of acquiring power in socio- political economic systems. It examines anti-communism as an ideological element of neoliberal complex hegemony in Bulgaria. By employing a Gramcian politico-historical analysis I explore examples of material and discursive ideological practices of anti-communism. I show that in Bulgaria, anti-communism strives to operate as hegemonic, common-sensual ideology through legislative acts, production of historiography, cultural and educational texts, and newly invented traditions. The project examines the process of rehabilitation of fascist figures and rise of extreme nationalism, together with discrediting of the anti-fascist struggle and demonizing of the welfare state within the totalitarian framework of anti-communism. Historians Enzo Traverso (2016, 2019), Domenico Losurdo (2011) and Ishay Landa (2010, 2016) have traced the undemocratic roots of economic liberalism and its (now silenced) support of fascism against the “Bolshevik threat.” They have shown that, whether enunciated by fascist regimes or by (neo)liberal intellectuals, anti-communism is deeply undemocratic and shares deep mass-phobic disdain for political organizing of the majority. In this dissertation I argue that, in Bulgaria, anti- communism has not only opened the ideological space for extreme right and fascist politics, it has demoralized left political organizing by attacking any attempts for a politics of socio- economic justice as tyrannical.

    THE JUDGEMENT SADILISHTETO By Stefan KOMANDAREV Synopsis Short In a small and poor village in Bulgaria, located close to the border with Turkey and Greece, Mityo loses his job and is forced to accept to work for his former commander in order to keep his house and pay his loans. His job is to smuggle illegal immigrants from Syria through the Bulgarian-Turkish border into the EU. Since the death of his wife, the relations between Mityo and his son are strained. The revelation of a terrible secret will force Mityo to face the past, in order to regain his internal peace and find forgiveness from his son. Long The story takes place nowadays, in a small and poor village in Bulgaria, which is located close to the border with Turkey and Greece. Mityo (45) lives with his son Vasko (18). The relations between the two of them are strained after the recent death of Fanka – Mityo’s wife and mother of Vasko. The situation is getting even worse – the dairy, where Mityo has worked for 15 years, went bankrupt. He remains unemployed and he can’t cover the payments on the loan, which he has taken several years ago for the treatment of Fanka. There is a real danger that Mityo and Vasco end up homeless – the family house serves as a guarantee of the mortgage. Fallen into deadlock Mityo accepts to work for his former commander from the time when he served in the military – the Captain. His job is to smuggle illegal immigrants from Syria through the Bulgarian-Turkish border into the EU.

    A HISTORY OF THE FESTIVAL BAND according to Stefan Kitanov - Kita I met Peter Georgiev – Pesheto in 1988. We were sitting together during the rehearsals of the “Sredets” choir. We were both tenors. I joined the choir in the autumn, soon after my daughter Ana was born. In the spring of 1989, the choir went on a tour in Greece. Pesheto said that he would bring his guitar. Then I knew he was a musician! I took my guitar too. In the bus, on the way to Athens, we prepared the first repertoair of Kita and Pesheto and we performed it at Omonia Square, right after the bus arrived there. After the 10th of November 1989 Pesheto went to play in restaurants in Norway and I went on the street and became one of the first buskers in Sofia after the democratic changes. It was an incredible time. In the beginning I played in underpasses, because it was cold – the underpass in front of the “Pliska” hotel was the warmest. In the spring, my favourite sport was in front of a bench on “Vitosha” blvd., on the corner with “Neofit Rilski” str. Then Pesheto came back and joined me. We played in the underpass of “Pliska”, the National Palace of Culture and Eagle’s Bridge, on “My spot” at Vitosha blvd., in front of the “Sveta Nedelya” church... Several times we were joined by the Danish clown Luna, with whom we made a short video in front of the National Palace of Culture. It was the end of april-may 1992.

Daily data of S&P 500, Nikkei 225 and VN-Index from January 01, 2012 to May 31, 2016 is used. In terms of estimation, the GARCH model is used to estimate volatilities in these stock markets; the Granger Causality Test is used to examine volatility spillover; and the test for causality in the frequency domain by Jorg Breitung and Bertrand Candelon (2006) is used to examine the volatility spillover at different frequencies. The empirical results provide two main contri- butions: (i) there is a significant volatility spillover from the United States to the Vietnamese stock markets, but the evidence of volatility spillover from the Japa- nese to the Vietnamese stock market is not found; and (ii) the volatility spillover may vary across frequency spectrum bands. To our best understanding, volatility spillover analysis using frequency domain approach was not previously reported in literature.
