Dear Patrons of the Scottsdale International Film Festival,

When the revelatory moment At the same time, her comments and your vote of confidence 10 came to me to create this years ago allowed me to comprehend the sacred trust that it is to Festival 10 years ago, I was program a film festival. I never lose sight of the responsibility I bear actually thinking about you. when choosing the that comprise your viewing experience. During that instantaneous jolt of inspiration, within that As this Festival rounds out its first decade, there continue to be flurry of synapses, I vividly many galvanizing as well as polarizing reasons to seek out the healing recall, thinking, “There must properties of great art, great film and great conversation. My wish be a zillion people like me who is that you laugh, cry, get schooled, and do some schooling of your want to see more foreign own. When you go home, I want you to mull the films over in your film brought to the Valley!” In head and wake up the next morning with a lasting impression about the initial months of planning, it was absolutely inconceivable to me the movies you have experienced and the Festival itself. We may not that I might be wrong about you. Yet, in those final, pivotal 17 days be two weeks long, we may not sport a red carpet, and we may not leading up to the fledgling opening night, I really wasn’t sure if anyone, brag about record-breaking attendance figures of 50,000. But, we let alone a ‘zillion people,’ would show up at the Harkins Camelview will see films from here and abroad that resonate and challenge us on Friday, Sept. 28, 2001. To my everlasting joy and amazement, to think and act in innovative and new ways. many of you came to support foreign film, and by association, foreign lands, foreign ways of life and foreign peoples. I admired the pluck I will close by acknowledging the hundreds of people who have helped and determination of the 2,500 attendees to reunite our community me over these past 10 years to keep the Scottsdale International with the world in such a humanistic gesture of goodwill. Festival a going concern. I could not and would not have done this without the unwavering support of legions of volunteers, family At the time, one attendee told me that she regarded the Scottsdale members, friends, donors, sponsors, foundations, and allies. Film Festival as a way to begin the healing process. She said, “I don’t want to be afraid of other people and other cultures because of what See YOU at the Festival! happened to us as a nation. I want to expose myself to other people and cultures and not fear our differences. And, I want to be around other people right now to share a good conversation after the films. I no longer want to sit at home in isolation, and this Festival came along at the right time. I saw the article in the paper and thought ‘this is the perfect way to make my way back into the world.’” Did I set out Amy Ettinger - Executive Director & Founder to create a Festival that made such an impact on our community? I would be lying if I told you my original aspirations were that grandiose.

A YEAR AGO IN WINTER is a subtle, powerful drama about loss and reckoning. A Bavarian family struggles to pick up the pieces in the aftermath of a favored son’s death but, emotionally numb to the impact it has had, they proceed by keeping up appearances. The mother’s commission of a portrait of her two children, however, acts as a catalyst for delving into the psychic drama beneath their frozen surfaces. Her daughter Lilli, a dancer, (in a subtle and deeply resonant performance by the striking Karoline Herfurth) is haunted by questions raised in the wake of her beloved younger brother’s demise. She careens along impervious to the interventions staged by her parents, until she and the painter, Max, (Josef Bierbichler) strike up a surprisingly rich friendship that speaks eloquently to the deepest ties between art and life. ~ Mill Valley Film Festival

Part 1 begins during Mesrine’s military stint in Algeria, where the rush of power sends him home, looking for more of the same. Falling in with the local crime boss (Gérard Depardieu), Mesrine takes to the role of gangster like he was born to it. Handsome, bold and quick-witted, he is soon kidnapping millionaires and robbing banks, two at a time. His larkish exploits become brutally serious, however, once he flees to Canada and lands in the savage, “escape-proof” St. Vincent de Paul prison. Mesrine, of course, escapes in spectacular fashion, hungrier and more radical than ever. ~ San Francisco International Film Festival
