So, when I first got my hands on Kristy’s book, I was blown away by the quality of the book, the high artistic level of the art, the little extras such as a color wheel and a commentary section about the drawings intended to capture the imagination of the colorist. If you’ve compared Kristy’s books to the hundreds of coloring books on the market you know they are gems, whether you use watercolor or not. Creations and creators like this are rare.” – Steve Mitchell, youtube.com/mindofwatercolor/stevemitchellstudios.com “You can tell Kristy is a watercolor artist herself—the images in the coloring books are both generously sized with open spaces for washes, and intricate for those of us who love itty bitty details! I love to use my finished pages in frames, on cards, or anything I can dream up. The Painterly Days watercolor coloring books are a treat for advanced painters and beginners alike.” – Kristina Werner, designer/youtube.com/kwernerdesign/kwernerdesign.com OTHER ITEMS YOU MAY ENJOY! • Title: Get the London Look: Anna Neagle As the Emblem of British Fashion and Femininity in Maytime in Mayfair (1949). Between 19
Title: Get the London Look: Anna Neagle as the Emblem of British Fashion and Femininity in Maytime in Mayfair (1949). Between 1947 and 1952, the top British female star at the domestic box office was Anna Neagle. She had displaced Margaret Lockwood, who had achieved the top position during the war years with her turns as dangerous and subversive women in Gainsborough pictures such as The Man in Grey (Arliss, 1943) and, most famously, The Wicked Lady (Arliss, 1945). In both films Lockwood co-starred with James Mason, the brooding, somewhat sadistic idol to a legion of female fans. Mason, mirroring Lockwood’s popularity, was the top male star of 1945 and his appeal was a ‘combination of romantic allure and Sadean fascination’ (Evans 2001: 108) – an appeal that meshed with Lockwood’s ‘unity of transgression and sexual appetite’ (Babington 2001: 94). Aimed at a largely female audience, the Gainsborough melodramas provided escapism and the danger and sexual allure of the characters and stars resulted in a skewing of ‘moral logic’ (Leach 2004: 67), which Jeffrey Richards reads as revelatory of the wartime dislocation of moral values (Richards 1985: 292). With the end of the war, however, there came a reclamation of traditional values, not least in British cinema. In the years immediately following the war, there was a distinct pattern in British films that foregrounded ‘the British people’ as hero, a pattern following the wartime work of Humphrey Jennings in providing images of a united Britain; and the idea image of a Briton was a figure of restraint, good-humour and self-deprecation.

It argues that the biopic is a necessary category because producers, reviewers and cinemagoers have significant investments in biographical subjects, and because biopics construct a ‘public history’ for a broad audience.

  • The Queen, Aging Femininity and the Recuperation of the Monarchy
Celebrity, Performance, and Aging: The shaping of Attitude and Expression in Modern Culture The Queen, aging femininity and the recuperation of the monarchy Dr. Josephine Dolan The University of the West of England Faculty of Creative Arts Department of Culture, Media, Drama St. Matthias Campus Oldbury Court Road Fishponds Bristol, UK BS16 2JP e-mail: [email protected] Tel: +44 (0)117 32 84440 Fax: +44(0)117 32 84417 Placing nationalism firmly in the social and cultural, Benedict Anderson suggests that mass print media is pivotal to the longitudinal emergence of an ‘imagined political community [that is] imagined as both inherently limited and sovereign" (p.6) in that it enables people separated both temporally and spatially to imagine that they have common bonds. Anderson’s concept of a mediated “imagined community” works equally well in relation to technologies such as film, television and the world wide web - and their complex interfaces – since it can be argued that the global reach of this complex media web is a necessary precursor to ongoing formulations of nationalism’s limited sovereignty. Anderson also suggests that the decline of monarchy is a general trait of nationalism. However, with its resilient monarchy, British nationalism runs counter to this general trend. Indeed, the discursive construction of the monarchy as a centuries old continuity that transcends the vagaries of time and the fortunes of economic and political shifts plays a key role in securing the hegemony of British nationalism. However, this link between the monarchy and British nationalism is contested and was severely threatened in the late 1990s when as many as 50% of Britons were expressing republican views.

  • British National Cinema
British national cinema With films as diverse as Bhaji on the Beach, The Dam Busters, Mrs Miniver, Trainspotting, The Draughtsman's Contract, and Prick Up Your Ears, twentieth- century British cinema has produced wide-ranging notions of British culture, identity and nationhood. British National Cinema is a comprehensive introduction to the British film industry within an economic, political and social context. Describing the development of the British film industry, from the Lumière brothers’ first screening in London in 1896 through to the dominance of Hollywood and the severe financial crises which affected Goldcrest, Handmade Films and Palace Pictures in the late 1980s and 1990s, Sarah Street explores the relationship between British cinema and British society. Using the notions of ‘official’ and ‘unofficial’ cinema, the author demonstrates how British cinema has been both ‘respectable’ and ‘disreputable’ according to the prevailing notions of what constitutes good cinema. British National Cinema analyses the politics of film and establishes the difficult context within which British producers and directors have worked. Sarah Street questions why British film-making, production and distribution have always been subject to government apathy and financial stringency. In a comparison of Britain and Hollywood, the author asks to what extent was there a 'star system' in Britain and what was its real historical and social function. An examination of genres associated with British film, such as Ealing comedies, Hammer horror and 'heritage' films, confirms the eclectic nature of British cinema. In a final evaluation of British film, she examines the existence of 'other cinemas': film-making which challenges the traditional concept of cinema and operates outside mainstream structures in order to deconstruct and replace classical styles and conventions.
