  • The Meanders of Wearer–Clothing Relationships
    sustainability Article From Wearing Off to Wearing On: The Meanders of Wearer–Clothing Relationships Ana Neto * and João Ferreira CIAUD, Lisbon School of Architecture, University of Lisbon, Rua Sá Nogueira, 1349-063 Lisboa, Portugal; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected] Received: 30 June 2020; Accepted: 28 August 2020; Published: 4 September 2020 Abstract: The current patterns of production and consumption of clothes are known for their negative impacts on our planet, and the efforts towards a responsible fashion system must come from industry and users alike. Whereas the fashion industry may focus on achieving eco-efficiency, designers need to engage the wearers in long-term commitment with their clothes to counteract the ongoing increase of textile waste. However, current design strategies for product attachment have proven that it is difficult to succeed at this mission. In this paper we introduce the focus and theoretical framework of a research project that aims to study the relationship between wearers and clothes. We present our research perspective through a literature review that is supported by empirical testimonies of dozens of women, whose words illustrate the complexity of human relationships with garments. When we compare our connection with clothes to interpersonal love relationships, we find that the similarities are significant enough to justify a different approach in design practice, and we suggest a re-focus on the existing wearer–clothing relationships. Keywords: wearer–clothing relationship;

In the educational setting, female students are required to take additional steps to ensure that they are not disrupting the learning environment at school (Glickman, 2016). These additional steps are laid out in educational policies like dress codes, which state the dress code rules, the rationales for those dress code rules, and the sanctions attached to dress code violations.

    Close to the Skin: A Revealing look at Lingerie Wedding gown House of Worth, France ca. 1878 Silk faille; silk embroidery; glass pearls; lace #67.446 Charles Frederick Worth (1825-1895) is considered the founder of haute couture. This early Worth creation illustrates his patronage by wealthy Americans, who had to travel to Paris to purchase their custom made dresses. Sarah Noyes Tibbets wore this dress when she married John Wool Griswold on January 15, 1878. Petticoat ca. 1878 Cotton #67.446c This petticoat was probably coordinated to go with the elaborate wedding gown by Charles Frederick Worth, made for Sarah Noyes Tibbett. The fineness of the cotton petticoat matches that of the gown. • A Study on the Characteristics of 20Th Century Womenfs Undergarments
    IJCC, Vol. 6, No. 2, 83 〜92(2003) 15 A Study on the Characteristics of 20th Century Womenfs Undergarments Seo-Hee Lee and Hyeon-Ju Kim* Assistant Professor, Dept, of Fashion and Beauty, Konyang University Instructor, Dept, of Clothing Science, Seoul Women's University* (Received June 23, 2003) Abstract This study aims to classify -women's undergarments of the 20th century by periods, and to examine their characteristics. The research method consists of a literature study based on relevant documentary records and a demonstrative analysis of graphic data collected from each reference. The features of women's under garments obtained from the study are as fallows: First, silhouette changes of outer garments appear to influence the type and style of a new undergarment. Second, technological development results in a new type of undergarments. Third, the development of new material appears to influence functions and design of undergarments. Fourth, social changes including the development of sports affects the changes of undergarments. As seen so far, the form or type, material, and color in undergarment diversify when fashion changes become varied and rapid. As shown before the 20th century, the importance of undergarment's type, farm, and function gradually reduces according to the changes of -women's mind due to their social participation, although it still plays a role in correcting the shape of an outer garment based on the outer silhouette. The design also clearly shows the extremes of maximization and minimization of decoration. Key words : undergarment, modern fashion, lingerie, infra apparel the beginning of the 20th century, corsets and I.

    (UN)COVERING: EXAMINING HOW FEMALE YOUTH IN TORONTO SCHOOLS USE STYLE TO CONTEST NORMATIVE IDEALS OF GIRLHOOD BROOKE CHRISTIAN ASHLEY CAFARO A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF EDUCATION GRADUATE PROGRAM IN EDUCATION YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO SEPTEMBER 2015 © BROOKE CHRISTIAN ASHLEY CAFARO, 2015 ii Abstract This thesis examines how girls in Canadian schools contest dress codes in order to negotiate their identity. I will engage in a critical dialogue that reshapes the discourse of women’s equality in new ways by refocusing our attention towards how young girls negotiate in the gaps and fissures of the normative ideal to contest and expand the narrative of girlhood. This research has broad social implications for both educational institutions and society to examine how patriarchal and colonial discourses seek to control female students’ bodies and how female students’ respond in the moments of interruption to enact power, agency and construct their identity. It will also demonstrate how educational institutions can deny contestations of the regulatory ideal by foreclosing female students’ interruptions instead of allowing them to develop into a politics. iii Acknowledgments This research was supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my advisor Dr. Mario Di Paolantonio for his continuous support of my work, for his patience, motivation, and immense knowledge. His guidance helped push me to think deeper about my research and maintain the quality of the writing of this thesis. I could not imagine having a better advisor and mentor for my Master’s Thesis.
