  • The Meanders of Wearer–Clothing Relationships
    sustainability Article From Wearing Off to Wearing On: The Meanders of Wearer–Clothing Relationships Ana Neto * and João Ferreira CIAUD, Lisbon School of Architecture, University of Lisbon, Rua Sá Nogueira, 1349-063 Lisboa, Portugal; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected] Received: 30 June 2020; Accepted: 28 August 2020; Published: 4 September 2020 Abstract: The current patterns of production and consumption of clothes are known for their negative impacts on our planet, and the efforts towards a responsible fashion system must come from industry and users alike. Whereas the fashion industry may focus on achieving eco-efficiency, designers need to engage the wearers in long-term commitment with their clothes to counteract the ongoing increase of textile waste. However, current design strategies for product attachment have proven that it is difficult to succeed at this mission. In this paper we introduce the focus and theoretical framework of a research project that aims to study the relationship between wearers and clothes. We present our research perspective through a literature review that is supported by empirical testimonies of dozens of women, whose words illustrate the complexity of human relationships with garments. When we compare our connection with clothes to interpersonal love relationships, we find that the similarities are significant enough to justify a different approach in design practice, and we suggest a re-focus on the existing wearer–clothing relationships. Keywords: wearer–clothing relationship;

  • Close to the Skin: a Revealing Look at Lingerie
    Close to the Skin: A Revealing look at Lingerie Wedding gown House of Worth, France ca. 1878 Silk faille; silk embroidery; glass pearls; lace #67.446 Charles Frederick Worth (1825-1895) is considered the founder of haute couture. This early Worth creation illustrates his patronage by wealthy Americans, who had to travel to Paris to purchase their custom made dresses. Sarah Noyes Tibbets wore this dress when she married John Wool Griswold on January 15, 1878. Petticoat ca. 1878 Cotton #67.446c This petticoat was probably coordinated to go with the elaborate wedding gown by Charles Frederick Worth, made for Sarah Noyes Tibbett. The fineness of the cotton petticoat matches that of the gown. Pantaloons or drawers United States 1870s Plain weave light brown mixed fiber (silk, cotton, and/or wool) #57.920 Hoop skirt United States Ca. 1870 Steel springs; cotton twill tape No acc. # Hoop skirts could on occasion flip up, due to tripping or high wind. Pantaloons, or drawers, proved helpful in covering the legs if such a faux paus occurred. Corset R & G Corset Co. 1875-1900 White twill-weave cotton, lace, steel #67.591 Close to the Skin: A Revealing look at Lingerie Dress 1925-1930 Floral print silk chiffon with pink silk faille underdress. #59.379 Simpler, sheerer dresses in fashion in the 1920s often borrowed elements from undergarments. This example has a pink slip that is integral to the sheer overdress, including a matching printed hem that extends below the outer hemline. The edge of the wide collar is finished in a manner similar to fine lingerie.

  • Kafka's Law-Writing Apparatus: a Study in Torture, a Study in Discipline
    Kafka's Law-Writing Apparatus: A Study in Torture, A Study in Discipline Daniel W. Boyer* INTRODUCTION Franz Kafka's short story In the Penal Colony begins with an officer touting the elegant design of an Apparatus used to punish and execute prisoners on a colonized island. From the outset, we learn that this officer is "quite familiar" with the device.' His zeal in describing it to the explorer, who has been asked to observe and critique the efficacy of its continued use as a disciplinary tool, is part private obsession with its unique mode of torture and part desperation to save it from being annulled by the current Commandant of the colony. Indeed, the Apparatus appears to be on the brink of desuetude. The officer recognizes that he is its sole 2 advocate and that all former adherents have "skulked out of sight." While the officer credits the colony's previous Commandant with its invention, he has been charged with keeping and implementing the "guiding plans," which serve as a programming code to control the movements of the three parts of the Apparatus-the Designer, the Bed, and the Harrow.3 Each of these parts serves a specific function, yet their motions must correspond precisely to achieve a successful execution.4 The Designer, the sole province of the officer, acts as the programming center of the machine, into which the officer enters his "guiding plans."5 The officer claims that he has only to enter this code; afterwards, the Apparatus performs the execution all on its own.6 The Bed holds the condemned man while it rapidly vibrates his body to conform to the * Attorney, Salt Lake City, Utah.
