Holy Week Easter in Malta and Gozo is not just a weekend event, it is a celebrated for whole week leading and building up to Easter weekend. Starting on the Friday prior to Good Friday, the Statue of Our Lady of Sorrows is carried in a procession through the streets of Valletta and many other small towns and villages. This starts off the celebrations for the Easter week. Maundy Thursday Maundy Thursday – the eve of Good Friday. This is when the ‘seven visits’ takes place, traditionally people visit seven different alters in seven different churches to pay homage to the Alter’s of Repose. Good Friday Good Friday is a day of mourning and can be a sombre day. Churches take down the ornamental decorations and no bells are rung and then procession run through the streets of all towns and villages. Malta does have some special and spectacular processions particularly Zebbug which is renowned for its extravagance, use of horses and involves hundreds of cast members making this a big tourist attraction. In Gozo the most notable procession can be seen in Xaghra. Easter Sunday While Saturday remains a slightly sombre moment, Easter Sunday is a real celebration day with Church bells ringing out and more spectacular processions where people line the streets carrying statues of the Risen Christ with bands playing festive tunes.

    LANGUAGE MAINTENANCE AND LANGUAGE SHIFT OF THE MALTESE MIGRANTS IN CANADA L YDIA SCIRIHA 1. INTRODUCTION It is a widely accepted fact that mother tongue maintenance in immigrant families is not easy when the host country's official language is different from the immigrants' first language. There are a number of studies which have documented language maintenance and/or language loss of different ethnic communities such as the Norwegian-Americans (Haugen: 1956), the French Canadians (Lieberson: 1972), the German-Hungarians (Gal: 1979), the Pennsylvanian-Germans (Huffines: 1980), the Chinese-Canadians (Lin & Stanford: 1983), the Albanians living in Greece (Tsitsipis: 1983), the Indian community of Taos in New Mexico (Fasold: 1985), the Lebanese immigrants in Australia (Taft: 1989) and the Maltese-Australians (Cauchi: 1990). Similarly, this short study discusses the lanaguage use of three generations of the same family of Maltese-Canadians living in Toronto, Canada. 2. LOCATION OF THE GROUP The community which was chosen for this study is located in one particular area in Toronto known as "The Junction Area" which has a relatively high percentage of Maltese-Canadians. Around this area the Maltese community built the church of St Paul the Apostle, which is run by the Franciscan Fathers from the Province of Malta. Close to the Maltese church there are a number of businesses run by Maltese such as a coffee shop, a bakery, a barber shop and a Maltese restaurant. Maltese clubs such as the Melita Soccer Club and the Malta Band Club and a recreational centre called the Malta Park, are located in the vicinity of ~e Maltese church.

    Nicholas Zammit Nicholas Zammit (1815–1899) was a Maltese medical doctor, an architect, an artistic designer, and a major Nikola (Nicholas) Zammit philosopher. His area of specialisation in philosophy was chiefly ethics.[1] Throughout his philosophical career he did not adhere to just one intellectual position. Roughly two-thirds into his life, Zammit passed from a liberal way of thinking to a conservative one.[2] This does not mean that there are no carry-overs, developments, or continuations between the two phases, or that Zammit himself acknowledged such a division. Notwithstanding, the development suggests that an analysis of Zammit's works will reveal different attitudes, dispositions, emphasis, and conclusions of the two periods.
