Din kienet l-ewwel Konvenzjoni li saret wara li għadda l-Att XX tal-2011 b’kunsens sħiħ miż-żewġ naħat tal-Parlament, u l-ewwel Konvenzjoni li saret wara l-ħatra tal-ewwel Kunsill b’Segretarja u d-Direttur u d-Direttorat għall-Maltin li Jgħixu Barra minn Malta mwaqqaf u mħaddmin kif kien maħsub fil-Liġi. Imma din kienet ukoll l-ewwel Konvenzjoni li fiha l-Kunsilliera kienu fil-qalba tal-ippjanar, tat-tmexxijia tas-sezzjonijiet u workshops, kif ukoll ħadu sehem bis-sħiħ f’kull aspett ta’ dan l-avveniment. Għalhekk kienet l-ewwel Konvenzjoni li fiha l-Gvern kien hemm biex jisma’ lill-parteċipanti u jixtarr dak kollu li kien qiegħed jingħad, aktar milli jiddetta jew jimponi dak li jidhirlu huwa. Il-Konvenzjoni ta’ din is-sena kienet ukoll l-ewwel Konvenzjoni li fiha rajna lid- Dijaspora Maltija tinbidel, u tinfirex aktar, bil-Maltin iwwaqfu komunitajiet ‘l hinn mill-pajjiżi tradizzjonali tal-emigrazzjoni, kif konna nafuhom sa ftit ilu. F’din il- Konvenzjoni rajna jieħdu sehem Maltin minn 11-il pajjiż. Bixra ġdida u mportanti f’din il-Konvenzjoni kienet il-preżenza u l-parteċipazzjoni taż-żgħażagħ. Din kienet qawwija u attiva ħafna.

Eat, drink, dance and celebrate, join the street processions and enjoy the friendly jubilant Easter atmosphere. Malta loves to celebrate and generally does it in a colourful and joyous fashion. Holy Week Easter in Malta and Gozo is not just a weekend event, it is a celebrated for whole week leading and building up to Easter weekend. Starting on the Friday prior to Good Friday, the Statue of Our Lady of Sorrows is carried in a procession through the streets of Valletta and many other small towns and villages. This starts off the celebrations for the Easter week. Maundy Thursday Maundy Thursday – the eve of Good Friday. This is when the ‘seven visits’ takes place, traditionally people visit seven different alters in seven different churches to pay homage to the Alter’s of Repose. Good Friday Good Friday is a day of mourning and can be a sombre day. Churches take down the ornamental decorations and no bells are rung and then procession run through the streets of all towns and villages. Malta does have some special and spectacular processions particularly Zebbug which is renowned for its extravagance, use of horses and involves hundreds of cast members making this a big tourist attraction. In Gozo the most notable procession can be seen in Xaghra. Easter Sunday While Saturday remains a slightly sombre moment, Easter Sunday is a real celebration day with Church bells ringing out and more spectacular processions where people line the streets carrying statues of the Risen Christ with bands playing festive tunes.

And that three Maltese authors, Immanuel Mifsud, Pierre J. Mejlak, and Walid Nabhan recently won the European Prize for Literature? The language they write in, of course, is Maltese, which is derived from an Arabic dialect that was spoken in Sicily and Spain during the Middle Ages. It sounds like Arabic with a smattering of Italian and English thrown in, and it is written in Latin script, making it the only Semitic language to be inscribed this way. It's the day to reflect on what we have achieved and what we can be proud of in our great nation. It's the day for us to re-commit to making Australia an even better place for the future. Australia Day, 26 January, is the anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet of 11 convict ships from Great Britain, and the raising of the Union Jack at Sydney Cove by its commander Captain Arthur Phillip, in 1788. Though 26 January marks this specific event, today Australia Day celebrations reflect contemporary Australia: our diverse society and landscape, our remarkable achievements and our bright future. It also is an opportunity to reflect on our nation's history, and to consider how we can make Australia an even better place in future. On Australia Day, over half of the nation’s population of 21 million attend either an organised community event, or get together with family and friends with the intention of celebrating our national day. Many more spend the public holiday relaxing with family and friends. Yet Australia Day is much more than barbeques and fireworks. It is more than another public holiday. It is more than the pride and excitement of new citizens who call themselves Australian for the first time on 26 January after being conferred citizenship.

    Maltese Newsletter 82 May 2015 Map of the European Union www.ozmalta.page4.me Page 1 Maltese Newsletter 82 May 2015 Walking in my grandparents footsteps in Malta People recognized me as Maltese…most said it was my eyes and complexion that gave it away. My “I LOVE MALTA” t- shirt was a hit with the locals (and I think a bit of a turn off at times), although it did point out to everyone that I was definitely a tourist. The locals all took time to ask about where my family was from and were so proud of their heritage and happy to share recipes and suggestions of places to visit. We spent a lot of our time in Malta with these locals, yesterday’s strangers. I took pride in telling them the family surnames: Cassar, Briffa, Fenech and Sultana. The Cassar name is everywhere there. There is Cassar Street (named after the architect Gerolimo Cassar), Cassar and Cooper Real Estate, Cassar names on the mail boxes and even on dumpsters. When we visited Mgarr it was the start of holy week (the Friday before Good Friday). The city felt deserted, there were no tourists there and this is what we wanted. This was a typical Maltese village and we were here for a nice quiet dinner. What we didn’t realize was that we were about to meet the whole town. At exactly 5.45pm all the ‘villagers’ gathered at the church for mass and for the procession around the town to mark the start of Holy Week.

Yet, the work of literary translators still lacks visibility and the process behind the emergence of literary translations remains largely unexplored. In Translation Studies, literary translation was mostly examined from a product perspective and most process studies involved short non- literary texts. In view of this, the present study aims to contribute to Translation Studies by investigating in- depth how a literary translation comes into being, and how an experienced translator, Toni Aquilina, approached the task. It is particularly concerned with the decisions the translator makes during the process, the factors influencing these and their impact on the final translation. This project places the translator under the spotlight, centring upon his work and the process leading to it while at the same time exploring a scantily researched language pair: French to Maltese.
