There was a great article in Motor Trend, July 2011 Issue. The article was titled “the nostalgia trap.” The writer noted that nostalgia is a seductive thing. If you view today’s world through the prism of the past, and it seems less certain and more confronational. It is comfortable, cozy and emotional. He loves classic cars (and that is why we have our Studebakers and yes, we love them). But he likes the quote from Will Rogers: “Things ain’t what they used to be and probably never was.” Page 6—October 2011 THE WESTERN OUTLOOK

Amazing Little-Known Studebaker History by Prof. Gustav Gehrluze Studebaker’s Depression-era “La Parsimony” 3-wWheeler Failed to Attract Buyers. The Great Depression devastated car sales, especially upscale and luxury brands. Firms scrambled to come up with cheaper models appropriate for a time of austerity. At Studebaker, the R&D department conceived the idea of a plain-jane, back-to-basics conveyance that could sell at an unbeatable price. It would be called ― La Parsimony‖ be- cause the name suggested both elegance and frugality. The new model arrived for 1932. Everything was done to cut costs. Instead of purchas- ing new dies and tooling, fixtures that hadn’t been used in decades were pulled out of storage and again put to use. A Few car shoppers in 1932 liked the retro look‖. simple tiller re-placed the steering wheel. Old-fashioned lighting allowed a simpler wiring harness and smaller bat- tery. CONESTOGA CHAPTER MEMBERS SUNDAY, OCTOBER 30—POTLUCK MEETING I have made arrangements to have one of our more inter- esting airplanes available for short flights around the airport traffic pattern during the October 30 meeting. The airplane is a Citabria. It is a fabric covered "tail dragger with tandem seating for 2 people. This is a modern air- plane that retains the style and design of an earlier type. It is also certified as aerobatic. The owner will give anyone who wants one a 10-15 minute flight for $30. All the pro- ceeds go to the owner, with none going to Aspen Flying Club, just to let you know I am not trying to profit from the meeting. Larry Ramsdell, Conestoga member

Conestoga - IDYSD 9-10-11 This was the result of some last minute planning! With the help from one of our newest club members, John Murphy, we put together a small invasion at Rosie’s Diner in Aurora, CO. While most of the Avanti owners in the club headed for the hills, some of us headed to the plains! I met up with the Zaner’s and we headed east on I-70. We got a lot of attention! The thumbs up and picture taking was business as usual! 9 club mem- bers brought cars and trucks and we have potential new members that brought out their Pro-Street Bullet Nose! There were about 120 cars at the show. 10 were Studes! Car owners were allowed to vote for their 8 favorite cars. Our club drove off with 2 top 10 plaques! On "Drive Your Studebaker Day" I took Barbara to Arden & Gloria Exner got one for their Avanti and Breakfast at Perkins in Fort Collins driving "Old (thanks to the club members!) my Hawk got the other Ugly" (The Jersey Bounce). one! Afterward, I drove home to pick up Peggy and went out to get ice cream at the local Sonic. A lot of Glenn Shull, Conestoga Chapter nice cars were there including Shirley Zaner’s 57! When I parked our car in the garage, I noticed the odometer. 40,004.2 miles! The neat thing about that is the 42... Our car is number 42!!! With the October issue of Turning Wheels Magazine, we (I) made a bad mistake. It was the International Meet issue, and my focus was on making sure I got all the car photos correct, and the report as complete as possible, while keeping the issue looking good. I think I (we) succeeded as far as that goes, judging by the good comments we have heard. However, even though Carl Thomason had sent me his "First Call for Nominations" article in plenty of time, and Tom Curtis sent us a nice new "elections" map showing the zones..... I completely missed including it, and only realized my error AFTER the issue was being printed, but BE- FORE it was finished printing, before it was mailed. I contacted Sheridan and we arranged for the "First Call" to be printed on the reverse of the mailing label (carrier page). But, unfortunately, most people throw that page away without looking at it. Bob Shaw also posted the information on the website, but not that many SDC members look at the website regularly. We are including a huge apology and explanation in the November issue, along with the Nominations information, but a lot of people (Canadians especially), don't receive their issue until after the middle of the month, and with the nominations deadline being November 20, many will not receive their November issue in time. I put together a vertical format page with all the info that was on the original page. (Editor’s Note: See page 11). Art is checking with Carl, and is wondering if it would be possible to extend that deadline beyond November 20. He's talking with Carl later today. Please let me know. AND I am really sorry about the error. And trying to make it right. Thanks. Ann Turning Wheels Editor Ann Turner - Art Unger DIRECTIONS TO MERV MUNDORF’S HOME AT 13345 TRAIL BOSS CT., PEYTON.
