The article was titled “the nostalgia trap.” The writer noted that nostalgia is a seductive thing. If you view today’s world through the prism of the past, and it seems less certain and more confronational. It is comfortable, cozy and emotional. He loves classic cars (and that is why we have our Studebakers and yes, we love them). But he likes the quote from Will Rogers: “Things ain’t what they used to be and probably never was.” Page 6—October 2011 THE WESTERN OUTLOOK Amazing Little-Known Studebaker History by Prof. Gustav Gehrluze Studebaker’s Depression-era “La Parsimony” 3-wWheeler Failed to Attract Buyers. The Great Depression devastated car sales, especially upscale and luxury brands. Firms scrambled to come up with cheaper models appropriate for a time of austerity. At Studebaker, the R&D department conceived the idea of a plain-jane, back-to-basics conveyance that could sell at an unbeatable price. It would be called ― La Parsimony‖ be- cause the name suggested both elegance and frugality. The new model arrived for 1932. Everything was done to cut costs. Instead of purchas- ing new dies and tooling, fixtures that hadn’t been used in decades were pulled out of storage and again put to use. A Few car shoppers in 1932 liked the retro look‖. simple tiller re-placed the steering wheel.

F L Y I N G H u b c a p s A Publication of the Central Florida Chapter The Studebaker Drivers Club, Inc. MAY 2015 LETTER FROM THE EDITOR WOW! TAX DAY IS BEHIND US. TIME TO ENJOY SPRING! May is a great time of the year, especially for those of us who live here in Florida. Most of us were smart enough to move here from the cold country, while a few of us were lucky enough to be born here. I frequently receive Studebaker newsletters from Chapters in places like Syracuse, New York and Eau Claire, Wisconsin. I love getting their newsletters and frequently I get something that I think you folks will enjoy. For instance, the April Badger Bullet-N featured their Joke of the Month that I’m sure they won’t mind my sharing it with you. It goes like this---Fifty-one years ago, Herman James, a North Carolina mountain man, was drafted by the Army. On his first day in basic training, the Army issued him a comb. That afternoon the Army barber sheared off all his hair. On his second day, the Army issued Herman a toothbrush. That after- noon the Army dentist yanked seven of his teeth. On the third day, the Army issued him a jock strap. The Army has been looking for Herman for 51 years. After you finish laughing at that one, get on out there and work on your Studebaker, or find one of our fellow members who still has a Studebaker, or more, like several of our members who own multiple Studebakers.

  • Introduction to R&C Database Compilation & Index
Introduction to R&C Database Compilation & Index I have a long history and fondness for Rod & Custom magazine. This is the first magazine I purchased at age 10, and I’ve been hooked ever since. I often refer back to my collection, but find it hard to quickly lay my hands on a given article. This is for fellow HAMB members who share a love for this little magazine. This Index covers Rod & Custom Magazine from May 1953 through May 1974. I stopped at 1974 since R&C went out of print then. R&C was restarted in December 1988 and lasted until October 2014. This index is created for general reference, technical reference, research, tracing automobile histories, and genealogy. I have attempted to use a consistent categorization or article grouping scheme across all 20+ years, even though editors or previous compilations may not have used this convention. This index contains the following specific information: Title of each article along with a descriptive supplement such as club affiliation, noted customizers, past owners, professions, etc. The author’s and/or photographer’s name where space allowed. Featured vehicle year, make, model, & engine and/or engine displacement where available or where space allowed. Vehicle owner name, city and state. Where the country is other than the United States, I listed the country Product manufacturer name, city and state. Address may be included if space allowed. The month and page number of each feature article or photograph. The index is sorted by year, and a title at the top of each page indicates which year.

Whether it be photos or stories, local contributions make this magazine so much more interesting for our members. Please keep your contributions coming; the whole membership is grateful for your efforts. I have finally got to the bottom all of my MGB gremlins. It’s been a tale of two steps forward and one back with the root cause being a failing ‘hot’ coil. The other poor running and wavering rev counter issues were caused because my “hot” electronic ignition, (when running with a standard coil) needed its positive feed to come from a ‘clean’ source and not the coil. It’s quite complicated but now resolved and if you have 8 hours to spare I’ll tell you about it someday. The MG passed its WoF during the week but the garage, who I’ve learned to trust, pointed out that the engine and gearbox rubber mounts are starting to break down. I’ll put the car up on our new ramp soon and have a good look myself, but having read some horror stories about these things, I think this might be a job for a specialist MG garage. Finally another plus for our National VCC Discussion Group. We now have around 1600 members in the group and the photographs and stories that are being published are just amazing.
