The article was titled “the nostalgia trap.” The writer noted that nostalgia is a seductive thing. If you view today’s world through the prism of the past, and it seems less certain and more confronational. It is comfortable, cozy and emotional. He loves classic cars (and that is why we have our Studebakers and yes, we love them). But he likes the quote from Will Rogers: “Things ain’t what they used to be and probably never was.” Page 6—October 2011 THE WESTERN OUTLOOK Amazing Little-Known Studebaker History by Prof. Gustav Gehrluze Studebaker’s Depression-era “La Parsimony” 3-wWheeler Failed to Attract Buyers. The Great Depression devastated car sales, especially upscale and luxury brands. Firms scrambled to come up with cheaper models appropriate for a time of austerity. At Studebaker, the R&D department conceived the idea of a plain-jane, back-to-basics conveyance that could sell at an unbeatable price. It would be called ― La Parsimony‖ be- cause the name suggested both elegance and frugality. The new model arrived for 1932. Everything was done to cut costs. Instead of purchas- ing new dies and tooling, fixtures that hadn’t been used in decades were pulled out of storage and again put to use.
