  • The Effects of Aerobics and Greek Traditional Dances on Cardio-Respiratory Responses in Adult Women
EXERCISE AND QUALITY OF LIFE Research article Volume 2, No. 1, 2010, 29-36 UDC 796.015.68:796.035-055.2 796.015.68:793.31(=14)-055.2 THE EFFECTS OF AEROBICS AND GREEK TRADITIONAL DANCES ON CARDIO-RESPIRATORY RESPONSES IN ADULT WOMEN Maria Genti*, Dimitrios Goulimaris and Georgia Ioannidou Department of Physical Education and Sport Sciences, Democritus University of Thrace, Greece Abstract The aim of the study was to compare the cardio-respiratory responses of adult women, which participated in aerobics exercising and traditional dancing programs. A total of 30 women, ±9,82 yrs, were participated in the study and divided in four groups according to their aged 45 involvement in the intervention programs. The cardio respiratory endurance of the participants was evaluated by the use of 20m shuttle-run multistage fitness test (Tokmakidis,1992) and the heart rate was recorded by the use of a portable heart rate tester (Polar Electron Sport tester 810). The analysis of the data showed that there were no statistically significant differences concerning the type of exercise (p>.05), but there were statistically significant differences between initial and final measurements both in Greek traditional dancing and in aerobics program for both experimental groups (p<.05). The above results shows that the participation in Greek traditional dancing programs causes cardio respiratory responses similar to an aerobics program and it can be used as an alternative type of exercise. Keywords: Greek traditional dancing, aerobics, aerobic capacity Introduction Occupying with physical activity and exercise considerably contributes in various ways to ’s an individual (Wood, Reyes-Alvarez, Maraj, Metoyer & Welsch, 1997) fitness as well as to his mental health, since with aerobics training the decrease of the brain tissue is kept under control, a ’s condition which already begins at the third decade of one life (Colombe, Ericson, Raz, Webb, Cohen et al., 2002).

NOSTALGIA, EMOTIONALITY, AND ETHNO-REGIONALISM IN PONTIC PARAKATHI SINGING BY IOANNIS TSEKOURAS DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Musicology in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2016 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Donna A. Buchanan, Chair Professor Emeritus Thomas Turino Professor Gabriel Solis Professor Maria Todorova ABSTRACT This dissertation explores the multilayered connections between music, emotionality, social and cultural belonging, collective memory, and identity discourse. The ethnographic case study for the examination of all these relations and aspects is the Pontic muhabeti or parakathi. Parakathi refers to a practice of socialization and music making that is designated insider Pontic Greek. It concerns primarily Pontic Greeks or Pontians, the descendants of the 1922 refugees from Black Sea Turkey (Gr. Pontos), and their identity discourse of ethno-regionalism. Parakathi references nightlong sessions of friendly socialization, social drinking, and dialogical participatory singing that take place informally in coffee houses, taverns, and households. Parakathi performances are reputed for their strong Pontic aesthetics, traditional character, rich and aesthetically refined repertoire, and intense emotionality. Singing in parakathi performances emerges spontaneously from verbal socialization and emotional saturation. Singing is described as a confessional expression of deeply personal feelings

American Journal of Humanities and Social Science (AJHSS) Volume 14, 2021 Dance, symbolism and Pythagorean philosophy: The ritual of "Kanilitsa" in the Greek community of NeaVyssa Filippidou Eleni, Postdoctoral researcher, School of Physical Education and Sports Science, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece Koutsouba Maria, Professor, School of Physical Education and Sports Science, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece Tyrovola Vasiliki, Emeritus Professor, School of Physical Education and Sports Science, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece Abstract Klidonas is one of the most known Greek dancing rituals, which is also celebrated in the Thracian community of NeaVyssa under the name Kanilitsa. Though symbolism and dance have been examined in various ways, yet their relationship through the Pythagorean philosophy does not appear in the dance literature. This relationship constitutes the aim of this paper. In particular, the aim of the paper is to study dance and symbolism in Kanilitsa through the dimension of Pythagorean philosophy, and particularly, its dance forms in relation to the musical and dancing tradition of NeaVyssa, as well as their symbolic function within the ritual. Data was gathered through ethnographic method as this is applied to the study of dance, while its elaboration with the comparative method. The dances of Kanilitsa ritual was recorded and analyzed using the Laban notation system and the morphological method. Finally, the symbolic function of the Kanilitsa dances was interpreted on the basis of the Pythagorean philosophical tradition. From the data analysis was found that the dances of the ritual do share common characteristics both in their form and in their way of performance, and function in a symbolic way within the ritual that ratifies the magic-religious ritual process.

Syllabus of Dance Descriptions STOCKTON FOLK DANCE CAMP – 2019 – FINAL 10/2019 In Memoriam Nelda Drury – 1918-2019 Nelda Drury nurtured the folk dance community in Texas, but her influence in the international folk dance community was felt throughout the United States. She was a dance specialist, her area of expertise being the dances of Mexico, and Central and South America. At the age of five, Nelda gave her first dance performance during a celebration in a small town in Texas. She grew up learning a wide variety of Mexican dances and later studied at the University of Mexico in Mexico City under the late Alura Flores de Angeles. Nelda did extensive research in Mexican, Central American, and South American dance. Her teaching took her throughout the United States, Mexico, the Orient, and Europe, presenting her seminars and Nelda Drury, circa 2014. displaying her dance form. She had a wealth of dance costumes that she collected on her round-the-world travels. She devoted her life to bringing folk dances from around the world to San Antonio specifically, and to Texas in general. She taught at folk dance camps and workshops all over the United States and, in turn, invited teachers she met doing so to teach at the yearly San Antonio Folk Dance Festival that she founded. Nelda taught at Stockton Folk Dance Camp in 1974. Ruth Levin Duree – 1942-2019 Ruth and her husband Richard Duree attended Stockton Folk Dance Camp for many years, most recently in 2014. Ruth met Richard in a Hungarian dance class he was teaching at Coastline College in 1989.
