It is about the size of California but has a population of less than 7 million. The country is known for its rather homogenous culture—a mix of Latin and Guarani influences, with 90% of the population speaking Guarani, a pre-Columbian language, in addition to Spanish. The Paraguayan economy is one of the most agriculturally dependent in the hemisphere and is largely shaped by the country’s production of cattle, soybeans, and other crops. In 2016, Paraguay grew by 4.1%; it is projected to sustain about 4.3% growth in 2017. Since his election in 2013, President Horacio Cartes of the long-dominant Colorado Party (also known as the Asociación Nacional Republicana [ANC]), has moved the country toward a more open economy, deepening private investment and increasing public-private partnerships to promote growth. Despite steady growth, Paraguay has a high degree of inequality and, although poverty levels have declined, rural poverty is severe and widespread. Following Paraguay’s 35-year military dictatorship in the 20th century (1954-1989), many citizens remain cautious about the nation’s democracy and fearful of a return of patronage and corruption. In March 2016, a legislative initiative to allow a referendum to reelect President Cartes (reelection is forbidden by the 1992 constitution) sparked large protests. Paraguayans rioted, and the parliament building in the capital city of Asunción was partially burned. -

This research study aims to empirically address the political dynamics reflected on Paraguay’s print press during the 2013 elections campaign. Method. This empirical study is based on the social network analysis of the name references included in a sample of news articles. Results. The results of the study include several graphical representations of the coverage of political actors during the 2013 elections campaign, which was strongly conditioned by the previous impeachment and removal of former President Fernando Lugo. Conclusions. This study of name references confirms the continuity of the traditional parties in Paraguay as institutions with political and media power, and the secondary and peripheral role of the actors that emerged in the political landscape when Fernando Lugo won the presidency of Paraguay. -

CORE UA 537 Spring 2014 CULTURES AND CONTEXTS: MODERN ISRAEL Prof. David Engel This course will explore the cultural values and expressions through which residents of the modern State of Israel, established in 1948, have tried to come to grips with the manifold challenges their country has faced since its inception. The term “culture” in the course is taken to designate the set of ideas, practices, and objects through which human beings adapt to their physical and social environment. The founders of the State of Israel envisioned that the country would initiate extensive changes in the way its citizens interacted with their environment: they anticipated major modifications in their economic and political behavior, their family life, their attitudes toward their bodies, their relations with their neighbors, their religious outlook, and their view of their place in the world. They expected further that these changes would find concrete expression in literature, art, music, architecture, and intellectual life, all of which would promote their vision of how the State's population should behave. However, for all that they looked forward to cultural change, Israel's founders did not imagine that the environment to which the new culture was supposed to help Israel's citizens adapt would itself change profoundly. In the sixty-five years of its existence Israel has had to confront many challenges, brought about, among other things, by rapid mass immigration, periodic wars, shifting geopolitical alignments, transformation of the global economy, and sweeping technological innovations. The course will analyze these farreaching changes in the context in which the new Israeli culture has functioned and investigate how that culture has responded to them. -

Paraguay (from Wikipedia) Paraguay (/ˈpærəɡwaɪ/; Spanish pronunciation: [paɾaˈɣwaj]; Guarani: Paraguái, [paɾaˈɰwaj]), officially the Republic of Paraguay (Spanish: República del Paraguay; Guarani: Tetã Paraguái), is a landlocked country in central South America, bordered by Argentina to the south and southwest, Brazil to the east and northeast, and Bolivia to the northwest. Paraguay lies on both banks of the Paraguay River, which runs through the center of the country from north to south. Due to its central location in South America, it is sometimes referred to as Corazón de Sudamérica ("Heart of South America").[9] Paraguay is one of the two landlocked countries (the other is Bolivia) outside Afro-Eurasia, and is the smallest[10] landlocked country in the Americas. The indigenous Guaraní had been living in eastern Paraguay for at least a millennium before the Spanish arrived in the 16th century. Western Paraguay, the Gran Chaco, was inhabited by nomads of whom the Guaycuru peoples were the most prominent. In the 17th century, Jesuit missions introduced Christianity and Spanish culture to the region. Paraguay was a peripheral colony of the Spanish Empire, with few urban centers and settlers. Following independence from Spain in 1811, Paraguay was ruled by a series of dictators who generally implemented isolationist and protectionist policies. Following the disastrous Paraguayan War (1864–1870), the country lost 60 to 70 percent of its population through war and disease, and about 140,000 square kilometers (54,000 sq mi), one quarter of its territory, to Argentina and Brazil. Through the 20th century, Paraguay continued to endure a succession of authoritarian governments, culminating in the regime of Alfredo Stroessner, who led South America's longest- lived military dictatorship from 1954 to 1989. -

Though the modern state of Israel was born in 1948, for years Jews were cut off from the Old City of Jerusalem and the Kotel, the Western Wall - the heart of the Jewish people, the axis of our collective national and historical identity, the center of our faith, and the focus of the history of the Jewish people for generations. Throughout Israel and around the world, on the 28th of the Hebrew month of Iyar, we celebrate being reunited with the city of Zion, Yerushalayim Shel Zahav, our only Jerusalem. History shows that it was the Jews who have made Jerusalem important to the world. In 1004 BCE, King David established Jerusalem as the capital of the Kingdom of Israel (2 Samuel 5:6). Following the first exile, he proclaimed: "If I forget you Jerusalem, let my right hand lose its strength. Let my tongue cling to my palate if I fail to recall you, if I fail to elevate Jerusalem above my highest joy." Three times a day, or even just twice a year, for thousands of years, Jews turn their faces towards Jerusalem and the Temple Mount and pray for a return to Jerusalem and to Tzion. -

1 Israel Studies, 8:1, Spring 2003 INTERVIEW WITH ABBA EBAN, 11 MARCH 1976 Avi Shlaim INTRODUCTION Abba Eban was often referred to as the voice of Israel. He was one of Israel’s most brilliant, eloquent, and skillful representatives abroad in the struggle for independence and in the first 25 years of statehood. He was less effective in the rough and tumble of Israeli domestic politics because he lacked the common touch and, more importantly, because he lacked a power base of his own. Nevertheless, he played a major role in the formulation and conduct of Israel’s foreign policy during a crucial period in the country’s history. Born in South Africa, on 2 February 1915, Eban grew up in London and gained a degree in Oriental languages from Cambridge University. During the Second World War he served with British military intelligence in Cairo and Jerusalem and reached the rank of major. After the war he joined the political department of the Jewish Agency. In 1949 he became head of the Israeli delegation to the United Nations. The following year he was appointed ambassador to the United States and he continued to serve in both posts until 1959. On his return to Israel, Eban was elected to the Knesset on the Mapai list and kept his seat until 1988. He joined the government in 1960 as minister without portfolio and later became minister of education and culture. Three years later he was promoted to the post of deputy by Prime Minister Levi Eshkol. In 1966 Eban became foreign minister and he retained this post after Golda Meir succeeded Levi Eshkol in 1969. -

Israel Debates No. 13 13 December 2012 Oslo, 20 Years Later: Is the Two-State Solution Dead? The Middle East Peace Process is in a deadlock and has seized up. Ever since Benjamin Netanyahu and his right-wing government came to power in the spring of 2009, there have been no meaningful negotiations with his counterpart, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict factually disappeared from Israel’s foreign policy agenda, which was dominated by the threat of Iran’s nuclear ambitions and the upheavals in the Arab world which were equally perceived as threats, in particular the rise of Islamic political forces and the electoral victory of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt. And yet, two consecutive events promptly placed the Israeli-Palestinian conflict back at the top of the political agenda, not only in Israel but internationally too. These were the eight-day military escalation between Israel and Hamas and other radical movements in Gaza (14 to 21 November 2012) on the one hand, and the recognition of Palestine as an observer state by 138 out of 193 UN member states in New York on 29 November 2012. The renewed fighting ended with the establishment of a ceasefire negotiated by Egypt’s President Mursi and US President Obama. Nevertheless, it cannot be overlooked that while Hamas suffered many losses, the movement emerged from this conflict politically strengthened. Armed conflict has marked every decade of Israel’s existence. Despite its unstable regional environment, Israel has developed a vibrant parliamentary democracy, albeit with relatively fragile governments. Early national elections were held on February 10, 2009. Although the Kadima Party placed first, parties holding 65 seats in the 120- seat Knesset supported opposition Likud party leader Benjamin “Bibi” Netanyahu, who was designated to form a government. Netanyahu put together a coalition comprising his own Likud, Yisrael Beiteinu (Israel Our Home), Shas, Labor, Habayet Hayehudi (Jewish Home), and the United Torah Judaism (UTJ) parties which controls 74 Knesset seats. Israel has an advanced industrial, market economy with a large government role. Israel’s foreign policy is focused largely on its region, Europe, and the United States. Israel’s foreign policy agenda begins with Iran, which it views as an existential threat due to Tehran’s nuclear ambitions and support for anti-Israel terrorists. Achieving peace with its neighbors is next. Israel concluded peace treaties with Egypt in 1979 and Jordan in 1994, but not with Syria and Lebanon. Israel unilaterally withdrew from southern Lebanon in 2000. Hezbollah, which then took over the south, sparked a 34-day war when it kidnapped two Israeli soldiers on July 12, 2006. -

Camp David’s Shadow: The United States, Israel, and the Palestinian Question, 1977-1993 Seth Anziska Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2015 © 2015 Seth Anziska All rights reserved ABSTRACT Camp David’s Shadow: The United States, Israel, and the Palestinian Question, 1977-1993 Seth Anziska This dissertation examines the emergence of the 1978 Camp David Accords and the consequences for Israel, the Palestinians, and the wider Middle East. Utilizing archival sources and oral history interviews from across Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, the United States, and the United Kingdom, Camp David’s Shadow recasts the early history of the peace process. It explains how a comprehensive settlement to the Arab-Israeli conflict with provisions for a resolution of the Palestinian question gave way to the facilitation of bilateral peace between Egypt and Israel. As recently declassified sources reveal, the completion of the Camp David Accords—via intensive American efforts— actually enabled Israeli expansion across the Green Line, undermining the possibility of Palestinian sovereignty in the occupied territories. By examining how both the concept and diplomatic practice of autonomy were utilized to address the Palestinian question, and the implications of the subsequent Israeli and U.S. military intervention in Lebanon, the dissertation explains how and why the Camp David process and its aftermath adversely shaped the prospects of a negotiated settlement between Israelis and Palestinians in the 1990s. In linking the developments of the late 1970s and 1980s with the Madrid Conference and Oslo Accords in the decade that followed, the dissertation charts the role played by American, Middle Eastern, international, and domestic actors in curtailing the possibility of Palestinian self-determination. -
