www.BishopSpencerPlace.org 2 “GARDENS ON ISLANDS” PRESENTED BY BSP RESIDENT BARBARA LEE

Our “Garden Time” contributor and Garden Committee Co-Chair, Barbara Lee, will be sharing a lovely program with us she is calling “Gardens on Islands”. Here is some information that Barbara shared with us as a teaser!

“The Swedish Bernadette family owns Mainau, an island in the German part of Lake Constance. It is both flat and hilly and has an extensive dahlia bed. One of the Channel Islands, Sark, is a feudal manor; the seigneury has a walled garden. Also in the English Channel is Saint Michael’s Mount, close to shore near Penzance. The garden is on a steep, rocky hillside with plants carefully selected to fit a difficult habitat. In contrast, Tresco is lush and green; it is one of the Scilly Islands southwest of Land’s End. Kauai, Hawaii, is know as the Garden Isle. Part of the National Tropical Botanical Garden is located on the south shore. Kiahuna Plantation Resort has both cacti and orchids”.

Escape from the chill of winter and enjoy this warm presentation at 3:00 on Friday, March 20, in the Westport Room!

GARY JENKINS PRESENTS “GANGLAND WIRE’ Gary Jenkins will come to BSP with a short version of his documentary, “Gangland Wire”, focusing on the Kansas City portion. In Gangland Wire, filmmaker and ex-cop Gary Jenkins tells the story in a way only an insider could. Gary obtained hours of actual wiretap audio obtained during the Las Vegas casino skimming investigation of the 1970s. This is the back story behind 's “Casino”. Gary captures the tragicomic aspects of this true crime tale, told by the players themselves through excerpts of the wiretaps and interviews of law enforcement and other eyewitnesses to the events.

Mark the date and time on your calendar to attend this screening. Jenkins will discuss his work and take questions. See you at 3:00 on Monday, March 30, in the Westport Room.

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER

If March comes in like a lion this year we may not notice much of a difference. After all, February has been no slouch when it comes to bitter cold! In response, we mostly tend to complain – and quite right, too – but I have also noticed an uptick in devotional expression. As in, “Thank God we don’t live in Boston!”

That has made me think about bitter weather as a sweet opportunity to give thanks for the warmth that surrounds us. For our home and grounds, and for those who clean and maintain them and see to our safety. For our food, and for those who prepare and serve it. For medical and therapeutic care, and for those who provide it. For entertainment and transportation and stylish hairdos and … and… and…

Who or what would you add to the list? Think about it and give thanks. The ones who care for us and the ones who care about us are, literally, God’s gifts making even wintry days seem brighter and warmer! — Chaplain Kathy Hall

CHAPLAIN ANNOUNCEMENTS Father Bob Hagan, from Guardian Angels Parish, will celebrate Mass for our Roman Catholic residents on Wednesday, March 4, at 9:30 a.m. in The Chapel of the Epiphany. Mass will be followed by the Rosary.

THE HISTORY OF STEPTOE PRESENTED BY JOE LOUIS MATTOX In order to unravel the mystery of the Steptoe neighborhood in Westport, you'd have to go back about 140 years to the times of the Civil War when Missouri's fate as a free state versus a slave state hung in the balance.

Joe Louis Mattox takes us back for an in-depth look into the neighborhood's history. Mr. Mattox's commitment to preservation includes serving two terms on the historic Kansas City Foundation Board. He has served four terms on the Kansas City Landmarks Commission and has been an historian and independent scholar at the Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Heritage Center and State museum. Joe was also awarded the Jane Fifield Flynn Lifetime Achievement in Preservation.

Mr. Mattox has had numerous articles written about Kansas City history in the Kansas City Star, The Jackson County Historical Society Journal, Historic Kansas City Foundation Gazette and other publications.

Come hear about this historical time in our neighborhood at 3:00 on Monday, March 9, in the Westport Room!

LYRIC OPERA PRESENTS “OPERA TO GO” The Lyric Opera is back at Bishop Spencer Place with an “Opera to Go” performance by two apprentices, Ashley Wheat and Clark Weyrauch, for a wonderful afternoon of opera sponsored by Country Club Bank.

Ashley’s recent roles include her debut at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory as Fiordiligi in Cosi Fan Tutte. She will return to the stage at UMKC in March 2015 as Beth in Little Women. She made her mainstage soloist debut at the Lyric Opera of Kansas City this fall as Annina in La Traviata.

Clark is now a Masters student at the University of Kansas, where his roles include the male chorus in Britten’s Rape of Lucretia and the defendant in Trial by Jury. His recent roles for the Lyric include Gastone in La Traviata, and the German sentry in Silent Night.

Please join us at 3:00 on Monday, March 2, in the Madison Living Room!

MOVIE CLASSIC WITH FILM CRITIC ROBERT BUTLER We love when Robert Butler, former film critic for the Kansas City Star, comes to BSP — this time he’ll screen the 1963 classic, “To Kill A Mockingbird”, based on the book.

In this three-time Oscar winning movie directed by Robert Mulligan, Mr. Peck stars as Atticus Finch with narration from his daughter, Jean Louise “Scout” Finch. The drama unfolds in a racially-divided town in Alabama during the Depression. Butler will introduce the film, describing how the situation in the movie reflected problems during this time of prejudice and injustice. And If we’re lucky, Mr. Butler might discuss the upcoming Harper Lee novel to be released in July 2015!

Butler has been reviewing films for more than 40 years, first at the Star and most recently on his website ButlersCinemaScene.com. Join us for this classic screening at 2:00 on Friday, March 6, in the Westport Room.

www.BishopSpencerPlace.org 10 GARDEN TIME On a cold, snowy February afternoon, the view outside my window was filled with a flock of starlings and robins — ROBINS, harbingers of spring! — feasting on juniper berries and crabapples. But robins live here all winter, and the harbinger of spring I am really looking for is a snowdrop.

The snowdrop is a small plant only a few inches high with pure, white blossoms that drop over toward the ground. Look for it early in March in the southeast corner of the bed around the font in the Bishop’s Garden. — Article written by Barbara Lee
