Everyone sees the actor at work, but very few people see the hours of research, the intrinsic skills, the gut instinct that the Casting Director puts into finding just the right person for just the right role. It’s a mix of routine and inspiration which brings the characters we come to love, and sometimes to hate, to the big screen. The Casting Director’s delicate work as liaison between director, actors, their agent/manager and the studio/network figures prominently in decisions which can make or break a project. It’s a job that can't garner an Oscar, but its mighty importance is always felt behind the scenes. He emigrated to the United States in 1913. OF MICE AND MEN (1939), LES MISERABLES (1952), and MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY (1962) are among his film credits. Milestone received Academy Awards for directing ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT (1930) and TWO ARABIAN KNIGHTS (1927), and was nominated for directing THE FRONT PAGE (1931). A PROPÓSITO DE LA FILOSOFÍA DEL CINE COMO EDUCACIÓN DE ADULTOS: LA LÓGICA DEL MATRIMONIO FRENTE AL ABSURDO EN LA FILMOGRAFÍA DE GREGORY LA CAVA HASTA 1933 José Alfredo Peris Cancioa Fechas de recepción y aceptación: 2 de junio de 2015, 8 de julio de 2015 Resumen: Desde una concepción de la filosofía del cine como educación de adultos, se puede proponer que la aportación más genuina de la filmografía de La Cava a la expresión de la interrelación entre matrimonio y crisis económica se encuentra en la figura de los antihéroes. Con estos personajes, La Cava plantea tanto la necesidad que experimenta el ser humano de las sociedades industriales de remediar la angustia que le produce su propia debilidad y vulnerabilidad, como la necesidad de entablar relaciones de ayuda. Desde su participación en el cine de animación, así como en sus películas de cine mudo y en sus películas habladas, los protagonistas superan sus propias limitaciones gracias a relaciones de confianza con los demás, de las que el matrimonio igualitario y de mutua ayuda entre el varón y la mujer es el modelo más pleno. Palabras clave: matrimonio, confianza, antihéroes, vulnerabilidad, igualdad y com- plementariedad entre varón y mujer, ayuda, filosofía del cine, educación de adultos. Abstract: From a conception of philosophy of films education of grownups, it can be proposed that the most genuine contribution of the films of La Cava to the expression of the interrelation between marriage and economic crisis is found in the figure of the anti-heroes. As screenwriters, our work has the capability to reach millions, if not billions - and sometimes what we do actually shifts public opinion, shapes the decision-making of powerful leaders, perpetuates destructive myths, or unexpectedly enlightens the culture. It isn’t always “just entertainment.” Sometimes it’s history. Leo Szilard was irritated. Reading the newspaper in a London hotel on September 12, 1933, the great Hungarian physicist came across an article about a science conference he had not been invited to. Even more irritating was a section about Lord Ernest Rutherford – who famously fathered the “solar system” model of the atom – and his speech where he self-assuredly pronounced: “Anyone who expects a source of power from the transformation of these atoms is talking moonshine.” Stewing over the upper-class British arrogance, Szilard set o on a walk and set his mind to how Rutherford could be proven wrong – how energy might usefully be extracted from the atom. Film scores demand an extraordinary degree of both musicianship and dramatic understanding on the part of their composers. Film music demands the highest standards of its composers, the insight to 'see' what is needed and come up with something new and original. With my series and the other content across the BBC’s Sound of Cinema season I hope that people will hear more in their movies than they ever thought possible.” Part 1: The Big Score In the first episode of a new series celebrating film music for BBC Four as part of a wider Sound of Cinema Season on the BBC, Neil Brand explores how the classic orchestral film score emerged and why it’s still going strong today. Frankenheimer on Location in Canada By Gerald Pratley Fall 1999 Issue of KINEMA THE DISTINGUISHED American filmmaker, John Frankenheimer, has returned to Canada and is making his fourth motion picture there called Reindeer Games presently filming in Vancouver, British Columbia, for Miramax. The main players are Gary Sinese, Charlize Theron, Ben Affleck and Clarence Williams III. Frankenheimer is working from a script by Ehren Kruger, the writer’s second screenplay following Arlington Way, released this summer. Frankenheimer first came to British Columbia twenty years ago tofilm Prophecy, a horror story rooted in the pollution of the environment by the logging industries. He returned ten years later to Calgary, Drumheller and High River, to film Dead Bang, a brilliant piece of work based on the true story of a vicious white supremacy movement. He was back a year later, to Bragg Creek, Canmore and Calgary, to make The Fourth War, set on the snowbound Czech-West German frontier during the Cold War and relating a thoughtful moral tale of two generals, one American the other Russian, and their conflicting ideological beliefs. Now he is snowbound once again high in the Cypress Bowl mountains of West Vancouver shooting all-night scenes in freezing-cold weather with the unit bathed in the eerie light of Musko location lamps raised high in the dark sky. Affleck plays a newly released prisoner who assumes another man’s identity and findshimself involved in a casino robbery at Christmas time. The script appealed to Frankenheimer as a thoughtfully written story concerning men who were born evil and have become a violent sore to plague a complaisant society. -
