The cinema, that “dream factory” takes over and employs countless mythical motifs – the fight between hero and monster, initiatory combats and ordeals, paradigmatic figures and images (the maiden, the hero, the paradisiacal landscape, hell and do on). Even reading includes a mythological function, only because it replaces the recitation of myths in archaic societies and the oral literature that still lives in the rural communities of Europe, but particularly because, through reading, the modern man succeeds in obtaining an ‘escape from time’ comparable to the ‘emergence from time’ effected by myths.

  • Serbia in 2001 Under the Spotlight
1 Human Rights in Transition – Serbia 2001 Introduction The situation of human rights in Serbia was largely influenced by the foregoing circumstances. Although the severe repression characteristic especially of the last two years of Milosevic’s rule was gone, there were no conditions in place for dealing with the problems accumulated during the previous decade. All the mechanisms necessary to ensure the exercise of human rights - from the judiciary to the police, remained unchanged. However, the major concern of citizens is the mere existential survival and personal security. Furthermore, the general atmosphere in the society was just as xenophobic and intolerant as before. The identity crisis of the Serb people and of all minorities living in Serbia continued. If anything, it deepened and the relationship between the state and its citizens became seriously jeopardized by the problem of Serbia’s undefined borders. The crisis was manifest with regard to certain minorities such as Vlachs who were believed to have been successfully assimilated. This false belief was partly due to the fact that neighbouring Romania had been in a far worse situation than Yugoslavia during the past fifty years. In considerably changed situation in Romania and Serbia Vlachs are now undergoing the process of self identification though still unclear whether they would choose to call themselves Vlachs or Romanians-Vlachs. Considering that the international factor has become the main generator of change in Serbia, the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Serbia believes that an accurate picture of the situation in Serbia is absolutely necessary. It is essential to establish the differences between Belgrade and the rest of Serbia, taking into account its internal diversities.

  • Digitisation of Complete Works of Radoje Domanović (1873-1908)
Преглед НЦД 36 (2020), 48–58 Vladimir Živanović Mei Ta Europe, Barič DIGITISATION OF COMPLETE WORKS OF RADOJE DOMANOVIĆ (1873–1908) – FIRST EIGHT YEARS OF THE PROJECT Abstract. This article presents a review of the first eight years (2013–2020) of the activities and effects of the “Radoje Domanović” Project – project dedicated to digitisation and promotion of the collected works of Radoje Domanović. 1. Introduction The “Radoje Domanović” Project was initiated by the author of this article, who is also the sole editor of the Project, in October 2013. The initial goal of the Project was to digitise the collected works of Radoje Domanović, and make them accessible to readers accross the globe. In the beginning, this activity was generically titled “Project for digitisation of collected works of Radoje Domanović”, but since it grew into a more comprehensive site, as will be shown in this paper, the editor settled for naming it simply the “Radoje Domanović” Project. Initially, the Project was published on the free domanovic.wordpress.com domain, until domanovic.org domain was purchased in October 2018. After the first three years, the status and activities of the Project were presented by the editor at the XIV Conference for Digitization of Cultural Heritage in September 2016. 2. Biography and Bibliography of Radoje Domanović Radoje Domanović (1873–1908) is the most famous Serbian satirist, and the first Serbian writer whose main genre was satire. Domanović initially started writing realist stories from village life during his studies and tenure as high school teacher in the south of Serbia in the 1890s.

Hrvoje Tutek University of Zagreb The Institutional Framework of Post-Socialist Literary Production: Literature as Creative Writing ven though the main sources of the drama (or tragedy, to be more precise) of the Ecapitalist restoration in former Yugoslavia (or “transition,” as it is usually called) are its most visible socio-economic consequences such as deindustrialization, ethnic wars, forced population movements, or skyrocketing social inequality, the changes oc- curring to the seemingly less dramatic constituents of the system, such as cultural pro- duction, should by no means be disregarded.1 They should, however, be studied with a sharper critical and comparative focus on their systemic—institutional, political-eco- nomic—aspects, which are determined by pressures stemming from the realities of the social organization of production as a whole. This is necessary not only because such analyses are prerequisites for an informed understanding of specific cultural artifacts in their historical context but perhaps more importantly because they can shed light on the new types of hegemonic demands and limitations that are imposed on cultural activity, as well as ideological compromises that producers of culture are obliged to either internalize or at least consider and relate to in a necessarily political manner in order to have their work disseminated and understood in the public sphere. As things stand at the moment, the existence of these ideological and institutional demands and limitations in the field of culture is visible only with difficulty, or when discussed, it is most often explained away as a consequence of temporary institutional disorder emerging from the chaos of transition and entirely corrigible by better poli- cies.
