REETH AND DISTRICT GAZETTE LTD ISSUE NO. 249 MARCH 2017 Your local news magazine for the Two Dales. PRICELESS REETH AND DISTRICT GAZETTE LTD First Thoughts . Reeth, park up, go for a walk and go home. Not to mention on Fridays when What shall we complain about today? I people drive past the market in Reeth know - cyclists. They’re an easy target. to go to a market elsewhere . oops, What about that bike/running event locals again. they had around Reeth last month. Perhaps we could charge people to What a mess they made of the green! come into Reeth? Just like the Hold on though, this morning I walked bookseller in Hawes who charges 50p across the green and there was some for people who come into his shop and real damage, caused by a large vehicle just browse. He’s popular isn’t he? needlessly driving right across it. These cyclists are a drain on the Locals I suspect - so that’s all right NHS though - especially when they then. come off their bikes and are airlifted These cyclists though, they come to hospital. Never happens to car into Reeth and don’t spend a penny in drivers that. Mind you, I suppose at any of the local businesses. It’s a bit least the cyclists are in the great like on Scott Trial day when there are outdoors, taking exercise and keeping plenty of motor bikes riders coming fit - unlike the thousands of couch through Reeth and not stopping to potatoes who are contributing to a patronise the local businesses; or even diabetes epidemic which threatens to on a weekend when people come into bankrupt the NHS. -

How good was it to get the leg back over the bike and ride a competition? I have been hanging out to ride a section ever since the start of this COVID situation. Firstly, I would like to say well done to the Southern team for setting the trials spot on. It was on the easy side but that was fantastic for the first trials back and especially for the amount of new riders we had. The sections were a good length and had very good diversity. Those loose hills off the track were something else. Looking at the scores its safe to say they were set spot on for what the objective of that trials was. Reviewing the scores, it was safe to say who has been practising and who the old school style riders were. Some of those turns were the old back to basics style of riding. I thoroughly enjoy the property that property for an event, especially when we landed the weather that we did. It was a good turnout for the event after the break. All the old members looked like they enjoyed being back. -

When Did Enduro Competitions First Start? Motorcycles Specifically
When did Enduro competitions first start? Motorcycles specifically intended for enduro competition first appeared at the International Six Day Trial (ISDT) now called the International Six Days Enduro (ISDE). The ISDE was first held in 1913 at Carlisle, England. The ISDE requires an enduro motorcycle to withstand over six days and upwards of 1250 km (777 miles) of competition; repairs are limited to those performed by the rider with limited parts. The ISDE has occurred annually, apart from interruptions due to World War I and World War II, at various locations throughout the world. The early events were a test of rider skill and motorcycle reliability. The earliest ISDE courses used the dirt roads common in that era. Today, most of the routes are off-road. In 1980, the ISDT was renamed the International Six Day Enduro (ISDE). Scottish Six Days Trial The Scottish Six Days (Open Reliability) Trial is an internationally recognized motorcycle competition, which has been running since 1909 (with breaks for the two world wars) making it the oldest motorcycle trials event in the world. Motorcycle riders from all over the world compete in this extreme sport, covering as much as 100 miles a day on road and off-road routes around Lochaber on each of the six days. The event is a trial of the skill, consistency and endurance of the riders, as well as a test of the specialized motorcycles used. Photos above were taken at Scottish 6 days trial 1955 Section A Scottish 6 Day Trial 1955 When was the first Dirtbike Invented? The first motorcycles were produced by companies like Indian, Harley, BSA, and Norton. -

Swaledale Museum Newsletter 27 Spring 2019 Draft
Newsletter No.27 Spring 2019 A message from the Curator This year marks the bicentenary of the birth of John Ruskin (1819-1900). Although his prose now reads rather heavily, his ideas are still inspirational. In February I visited the wonderful exhibition on Ruskin at 2 Temple Place in London, and I was struck by how his delight in the ‘Alpine’ air of the countryside of the north-east may perhaps have influenced others. Remember how Marie Hartley and Ella Pontefract describe the ‘Alpine’ views of Swaledale, in their first book published in 1934? Ruskin created a museum in Sheffield, the Guild of St George, in 1870 for the industrial workers of the city. At the same time Swaledale was still very much an Spring has returned to the Museum garden….it must be industrial landscape. Now Ruskin had very clear thoughts on nearly opening time! what a museum should be; a place of learning, interaction and social engagement. In this age of government austerity, which has made such an impact on the funding of culture, perfect shape into which they are fashioned for the infrastructure and education, museums have an even greater function they were meant to follow, and the time taken role to play. even on the most humble object to enhance its aesthetic appeal through decoration. Thinking about the work of 2019 also marks six hundred years since the death of John Ruskin and Leonardo da Vinci makes me look at Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519). It might seem incongruous the our collection in a new and inspiring way, I hope that to connect Ruskin and Leonardo, but both valued the power it will for you also. -
