May 2015 As I write, our president Brendan Smith is still in Europe enjoying the sights following his competing in the Scottish Six Days Trial. It seems that the SSDT was even tougher than usual this year, especially in the early part of the week, with Tuesday’s circuit being rated by many as being the toughest day in living memory. A combination of a very long circuit (around 100 miles), tough sections, terrible weather and a tight time allowance resulted in substantial time penalties for many riders. Unfortunately for Brendan, after surviving the day, a mechanical failure put him out on the Wednesday morning, but his Victorian riding companion Tim Lewis made it to the finish. Congratulations to both riders for their great efforts. I am sure that the SSDT bug will have bitten them and they will both be back for another attempt in the future. -

Good Practice Guidance for Event Organisers & Land Managers, the current version of which may be found on the LARA website at https://laragborg.wordpress.com/publications/ This paper is a brief overview of the subject, and good advice is to be found in the various Refer- ence Documents listed below, which explain why some sites succeed while others fail. 1. ‘Off-road driving sites’ largely fall into three categories: • Motor sport event sites – which include permanent race tracks like Brands Hatch and the wide range of permanent sites at which organised events take place. The bottom end of this category would be something like a moto-cross track on a farm, where the track itself is a permanent feature, although the land is grazed between events. Motor sport events sites might be owned by commercial enterprises, by motor sport clubs (comparatively uncommon) or by, typically, farmers, who allow access by licence or lease. In general, there is no ‘public access’ to the use of these sites. Control rests with the site owners and event-organising clubs. • Motor sport practice tracks. Bar a few such sites owned by clubs, these sites are op- erated by the small business sector. -

MODERN ENDURO ary Enman, a 15-year-old hare scrambles racer from Bangor, Pa., admits that he wasn’t sure what to expect when he started enduro racing. “For the most part, I didn’t have any idea what I was doing when I lined up for my first enduro,” says Gary, who decided to try the national enduros when he was just 13 years old. “My younger brother, Neil, and I were looking for something different. Our dad used to ride traditional time-keeping enduros, so we decided to give enduros a try. It wasn’t that hard to transition into.” The Enman brothers say their parents are their pit crew, but their dad hopes to ride with them next year. On occasion, the boys get to ride on the same row, and that adds to the camaraderie-building experience. “The enduros have a great community vibe,” Neil says. “It’s like being part of a huge family. Someone is always there to One Of help when you need it.” While racing is the main focus of the weekend, the Enman Motorcycling’s brothers say they enjoy camping, hanging out with their race friends and checking out the terrain. What role does a physio play in a prestigious international motocross event? Jessica Smith reveals all here… Physiotherapist, Jessica Smith from our Rosebud clinic, recently returned from France where she undertook the role of Physiotherapist for the Australian Enduro Motocross Team. Here, she gives us some insight into the role that a Physiotherapist plays in an intensive event like motocross. I recently had the absolute privilege of being the physiotherapist for the Australian Enduro Motocross Team who competed at the 2017 FIM International Six Days Enduro (ISDE), held in Brive-la-Gaillarde, France from 28 August to 2 September. Ten riders made up three Trophy Teams, who competed against 32 rival nations, representing Australia at the highest level in Enduro and Off-Road racing. I can not thank Jon, Simon and the whole AORC/MA team for giving me this opportunity, of which I am still absolutely buzzing from. Firstly a huge congratulations to the now 5x world champion Aussie Women’s team finishing 1st. The Aussie senior male team finished second, putting in huge efforts throughout the week. I have such admiration for the riders and what they put their bodies through over the six day event. My role during the week was assisting the 10 riders in getting their bodies ready for the six day event, including advice and education regarding stretches, nuero-muscular enhancing exercises and providing manual therapy techniques most commonly to their thoracic spine and hips. Once the event begun I was also assisting the riders with basic first aid and managing any injuries sustained during the day. -

This work was part of the ISA project, which developed ISA systems for passenger cars, motorcycles, and trucks, and tested the car and truck systems in real- world field trials. The objectives of the work reported here were: • To define a functional specification for an ISA appropriate for a motorcycle • To identify the additional safety hazards associated with an ISA when being used by motorcyclists • To select an appropriate example motorcycle and to define an ISA architecture suitable to be installed on the selected motorcycle as a proof of concept • To assess ISA functionality and performance as well as user acceptance A suitable vehicle was acquired and a number of design alternatives considered. -
