2 3 Harley-Davidson was born in a wooden shed in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1903. Five years later, our first police motorcycle was delivered. Our unwavering commitment has kept us at the front of the motorcade ever since. Today, the vast majority of motor units in the United States ride Harley-Davidson® Police motorcycles. We consider it an honor to serve people who make enormous contributions—and sometimes sacrifices—to keep the rest of us safe and free. WE ANSWERED THE CALL IN 1908. AND WE STILL HEAR IT TODAy. To a motor officer, the call of duty is so powerful. It can echo across generations. Around the country, there are countless examples of motor officers who have passed the torch to their children, who sometimes pass it on to yet another generation, creating a family legacy of duty, honor, and service. We approach our work with the same kind of passion they do, a passion that elevates our job into a calling too. 4 5 That first order for police motorcycles in 1908 went to the Detroit Police Department. The DPD Motor Unit is steeped in traditions, at least two of which carry on to this day. One of them is that the uniform of a motor officer includes a leather bow tie. The other is that the uniform of a motor officer also includes a Harley-Davidson® motorcycle. THE ONLy POLICE MOTORCyCLE OF HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE. By the late 1920s, Harley-Davidson® motorcycles were a familiar sight in America, performing important work for more than 3,000 police departments and government agencies. -

MODERN ENDURO ary Enman, a 15-year-old hare scrambles racer from Bangor, Pa., admits that he wasn’t sure what to expect when he started enduro racing. “For the most part, I didn’t have any idea what I was doing when I lined up for my first enduro,” says Gary, who decided to try the national enduros when he was just 13 years old. “My younger brother, Neil, and I were looking for something different. Our dad used to ride traditional time-keeping enduros, so we decided to give enduros a try. It wasn’t that hard to transition into.” The Enman brothers say their parents are their pit crew, but their dad hopes to ride with them next year. On occasion, the boys get to ride on the same row, and that adds to the camaraderie-building experience. “The enduros have a great community vibe,” Neil says. “It’s like being part of a huge family. Someone is always there to One Of help when you need it.” While racing is the main focus of the weekend, the Enman Motorcycling’s brothers say they enjoy camping, hanging out with their race friends and checking out the terrain. Analyses of hospital admission data (Victorian Inpatient Minimum Dataset - VlMD) showed that Police-reported data account for only 80.4% for 18-20 year old motorcyclists involved in on-road crashes and only 37.4% for under 18 year olds in on-road crashes. On- and off-road crashes were each responsible for a total of more than 4000 hospital bed-days in Victoria in 1991. This comprised 2822 and 1282 hospital bed-days for on- and off-road injuries, respectively. From information derived from the Victorian Injury Surveillance System (VlSS) and the VlMD, it is estimated that motorcycle injuries to riders and passengers aged under 21 result in 1868 presentations to Emergency Departments in Victorian hospitals per year. -

Yet motorcyclists face the highest levels of collision risk on our roads – a situation we are determined to improve. London has a long history of successful initiatives to increase the safety of motorcyclists. Since 2000 the number of motorcyclists killed in the Capital has been halved. In 2013 the Mayor and Transport for London (TfL) published Safe Streets for London: an ambitious and comprehensive plan to reduce further the number of people killed or seriously injured in London by 40 per cent by 2020. To achieve this target, and work towards the ambition of a future with roads free from death and serious injury, this Motorcycle Safety Action Plan, a first for London, sets out 29 actions. These cover many areas, including an ambitious programme of engineering, education and enforcement, together with increased investment in road safety. Collaborative working will be critical to success. We have already put this at the centre of our approach with the establishment of the Road Safety Steering Group for London, as well as a Motorcycle Safety Working Group to ensure that we are working with partners across the Capital to make motorcycling safer. -

What role does a physio play in a prestigious international motocross event? Jessica Smith reveals all here… Physiotherapist, Jessica Smith from our Rosebud clinic, recently returned from France where she undertook the role of Physiotherapist for the Australian Enduro Motocross Team. Here, she gives us some insight into the role that a Physiotherapist plays in an intensive event like motocross. I recently had the absolute privilege of being the physiotherapist for the Australian Enduro Motocross Team who competed at the 2017 FIM International Six Days Enduro (ISDE), held in Brive-la-Gaillarde, France from 28 August to 2 September. Ten riders made up three Trophy Teams, who competed against 32 rival nations, representing Australia at the highest level in Enduro and Off-Road racing. I can not thank Jon, Simon and the whole AORC/MA team for giving me this opportunity, of which I am still absolutely buzzing from. Firstly a huge congratulations to the now 5x world champion Aussie Women’s team finishing 1st. The Aussie senior male team finished second, putting in huge efforts throughout the week. I have such admiration for the riders and what they put their bodies through over the six day event. My role during the week was assisting the 10 riders in getting their bodies ready for the six day event, including advice and education regarding stretches, nuero-muscular enhancing exercises and providing manual therapy techniques most commonly to their thoracic spine and hips. Once the event begun I was also assisting the riders with basic first aid and managing any injuries sustained during the day. -
