From the driving original classic Cray “You Move Me” with its scorching guitar leads, to the melodic 60’s sway of “Fine Yesterday” featuring Cray’s trademark soul drenched vocals, In My Soul draws listeners in very quickly. Recorded at Santa Barbara Sound and engineered by Niko Bolas, In My Soul features the Otis Redding cover “Nobody’s Fault But My Own” that finds Cray trading vocals with drummer Les Falconer and features a punchy horn ensemble and catchy guitar verse. The moving Cray penned “What Would You Say” pierced with his unique guitars licks, has Cray dreaming about a better world and in traditional Cray fashion asking listeners, “What would you say if we quit waging war, children felt safe to sleep. One of these days we may all learn to talk over a table with something to eat. What would you say? Can we do that, What would you say?” Longtime bandmate Richard Cousins co-wrote the Booker T homage, an instrumental entitled “Hip Tight Onions” as well as the poignant 70’s tinged “Hold On” that talks about relationship perseverance during difcult times. Cries of lost love are told in both “Pillow”, the haunting bonus track co-written by Cray and Jerry Friedman as well as “I Guess I’ll Never Know” the funky hard driven tune co-written by Falconer. The album also features a version of “Deep In My Soul” a staple in the set list of the great soul and blues singer Bobby Blue Bland as well as a version of the Isaac Hayes / David Porter cover “Your Good Thing (Is About to End)” first recorded by Motown’s Mable John in 1966 and then became a hit single for Lou Rawls in 1969. New Yorker Magazine (Sept 2013) calls Cray “One of the most reliable pleasures of soul and blues for over three decades now… “and Rolling Stone Magazine (4/2012) credited Cray’s Strong Persuader album to having reinvented the blues with his “distinct razor sharp guitar playing” that “introduced a new generation of mainstream rock fans to the language and form of the blues.” Robert Cray has written or performed with everyone from Eric Clapton to Stevie Ray Vaughan, from Bonnie Raitt to John Lee Hooker. Inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame at the age of 57, he is one of the youngest living legends to receive the prestigious honor.     Michael Downs Trying to Find My Li’l All ’n All (Sitting on Top of the World) campground in Mississippi, a cold December dawn: I climbed from a A sleeping bag, befuddled by the clarity of morning. Blinking into sun-glare off the steady surfaces of ponds. Stumbling across frozen, heaved ground that had been mud the night before. Coffee could have helped, but I didn’t have any. My old dog nosed through dry leaves for the best place to piss. For two weeks she and I had traveled, a road-trip start to my fiftieth year. I’ d envisioned back roads from Baltimore to Austin, campgrounds and books, barbecue, reunion with loved ones—my parents, especially, given Mom’s flagging health and chronic pain. Kaimin would gain canine prestige by marking territory at the Clinton Library in Little Rock and Faulkner’s Rowan Oak in Oxford. That had been the plan, and much of it had come to pass. But this day involved a different agenda. Today I’ d see a man about a song—and not just any song, but one that for more than two decades had held me with an inex- plicable grip. On its face, “Sitting on Top of the World” is just an old blues tune, first recorded in 1930 by the Mississippi Sheiks. But it’s a shapeshifter, too, having been performed or recorded hundreds of times in everything from jazz to bluegrass to Texas swing, folk, and rock. Ray Charles, Jack White, the Carter Family, the Carolina Chocolate Drops, Bill Frisell, The Grateful Dead—even the “Bye, bye, Miss American Pie” guy: they’ve all done it.

    “Smokestack Lightning”--Howlin’ Wolf (1956) Added to the National Registry: 2009 Essay by James Segrest and Mark Hoffman (guest post)* Howlin’ Wolf Original release label “Smokestack Lightning” is the perfect distillation of what made Howlin’ Wolf such a powerfully unique artist. Built on a driving, hypnotic, one-chord vamp that subtly accelerates like a steam locomotive, Howlin’ Wolf sings an intense field holler vocal, interspersed with falsetto howls and blasts of raw country blues harmonica. The lyrics, a pastiche of traditional blues lines pared to the bone, are dark and cryptic conveying a mood of metaphysical agony. The musicians, accompanying Wolf with great skill on the recording, are Willie Johnson and Hubert Sumlin on guitar, Willie Dixon on bass, Earl Phillips on drums and Hosea Lee Kennard on piano. A small hit at the time, “Smokestack Lightning” has since become a classic of Chicago blues and an indelible part of the American canon of song. Howlin’ Wolf was born Chester Arthur Burnett on June 10, 1910 in White Station, Mississippi, a tiny railroad stop near West Point in the northeastern part of the state. His parents Leon “Dock” Burnett and Gertrude Young separated when Chester was very young and he was raised by his abusive uncle, Will Young. At thirteen, Wolf fled his uncle’s home, hopping a train to the Mississippi Delta where he reunited with his father and had a loving home at last. At the age of eighteen, Wolf learned to play guitar from Charley Patton the Delta’s first great blues star. A small man in stature and build, Patton was the best guitarist in the Delta, playing with a percussive aggressiveness that was astounding.

Common Ground on the Hill is a multifaceted year-round program, including two separate Traditions Weeks of summer classes, concerts and activities, held on the campus of McDaniel College, two separate Music and Arts festivals held at the Carroll County Farm Museum, two seven-event Monthly Concert Series held in Westminster and Baltimore, and a new program this summer at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, Common Ground on Seminary Ridge.

His landmark recordings in 1936 and 1937, display a combination of singing, guitar skills, and songwriting talent that has influenced later generations of musicians. Johnson's shadowy, poorly documented life and death at age 27 have given rise to much legend, including the Faustian myth that he sold his soul at a crossroads to achieve success. As an itinerant performer who played mostly on street corners, in juke joints, and at Saturday night dances, Johnson had little commercial success or public recognition in his lifetime. It was only after the reissue of his recordings in 1961, on the LP King of the Delta Blues Singers that his work reached a wider audience. Johnson is now recognized as a master of the blues, particularly of the Mississippi Delta blues style. He is credited by many rock musicians as an important influence; Eric Clapton has called Johnson "the most important blues singer that ever lived." Johnson was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as an early Influence in their first induction ceremony in 1986. In 2010, David Fricke ranked Johnson fifth in Rolling Stone′s list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.
