Having played the instru- ment for, then, almost two decades, I thought that a novelist would not, could not, feature specialty instruments such as the C-melody sax if he did not play the horn himself. Once the saxophone had caught my attention, I noticed all sorts of uncommon references that seemed to confirm my hunch that Thomas Pynchon himself played the instrument: McClintic Sphere’s 4½ reed, the contra- bass sax of Against the Day, Gravity’s Rainbow’s Charlie Parker passage.

  • Michael Downs Trying to Find My Li'l All 'N All (Sitting on Top of the World)
Michael Downs Trying to Find My Li’l All ’n All (Sitting on Top of the World) campground in Mississippi, a cold December dawn: I climbed from a A sleeping bag, befuddled by the clarity of morning. Blinking into sun-glare off the steady surfaces of ponds. Stumbling across frozen, heaved ground that had been mud the night before. Coffee could have helped, but I didn’t have any. My old dog nosed through dry leaves for the best place to piss. For two weeks she and I had traveled, a road-trip start to my fiftieth year. I’ d envisioned back roads from Baltimore to Austin, campgrounds and books, barbecue, reunion with loved ones—my parents, especially, given Mom’s flagging health and chronic pain. Kaimin would gain canine prestige by marking territory at the Clinton Library in Little Rock and Faulkner’s Rowan Oak in Oxford. That had been the plan, and much of it had come to pass. But this day involved a different agenda. Today I’ d see a man about a song—and not just any song, but one that for more than two decades had held me with an inex- plicable grip. On its face, “Sitting on Top of the World” is just an old blues tune, first recorded in 1930 by the Mississippi Sheiks. But it’s a shapeshifter, too, having been performed or recorded hundreds of times in everything from jazz to bluegrass to Texas swing, folk, and rock. Ray Charles, Jack White, the Carter Family, the Carolina Chocolate Drops, Bill Frisell, The Grateful Dead—even the “Bye, bye, Miss American Pie” guy: they’ve all done it.

  • Robert Cray Band
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DECEMBER 23, 2008 RIVER ROCK CASINO RESORT PRESENTS THE ROBERT CRAY BAND LIVE AT THE RIVER ROCK SHOW THEATRE FRIDAY, APRIL 3 Robert Cray is one of the few blues artists who managed to cultivate a mainstream following in the 80’s and 90’s. In the course of a long-running career that began in 1974, he uniquely blended elements of rhythm and blues, pop, and traditional blues to win fans to a more contemporary blues sound. While laying down track after track of good- time, uptown, low-down blues, he’s inspired critics to praise his soulful vocal and instrumental artistry. Born in Columbus, Georgia, Cray's middle-class childhood as an "Army brat" stood in stark contrast to the impoverished Southern beginnings and Northern ghetto lifestyles of many blues greats. Cray had a number of musical influences gleaned from his father's voluminous record collection which included gospel, rhythm and blues, jazz and traditional blues. He practiced diligently and joined a band while in high school in Newport News, Virginia before he and his family picked up and moved to Tacoma, Washington. In 1969 at the age of sixteen, Cray found a kindred spirit in Richard Cousins, a local musician. The two of them embarked on a study of the blues while playing together in Tacoma bars. Their findings influenced the development of their own music and they travelled to Eugene, Oregon in the hopes of finding success in the progressive college town. The Robert Cray Band hit the bar circuit with Tom Murphy on drums and Cray as frontman on vocals and guitars.

As everyone is aware by now, it is business most unusual these days, and that affects Charlotte Blues Society as well as the businesses we support with live music. CBS has been taking the cues from City, State and Federal officials regarding our events and gatherings throughout the novel coronavirus / COVID-91 pandemic. The Stay at Home order by the County has indeed affected upcoming events, and we hope every one of our members and fellow music lovers will take this advice to heart and follow it, in order that this virus be allowed to run its course with the least transmission and loss of life. We love each of you and want you to take care of your health, and stay safe: “Stay Home” This is serious stuff friends. This is a moment in time that we must take action, or perhaps ,more clearly: non- action.
