  • Michael Downs Trying to Find My Li'l All 'N All (Sitting on Top of the World)
Michael Downs Trying to Find My Li’l All ’n All (Sitting on Top of the World) campground in Mississippi, a cold December dawn: I climbed from a A sleeping bag, befuddled by the clarity of morning. Blinking into sun-glare off the steady surfaces of ponds. Stumbling across frozen, heaved ground that had been mud the night before. Coffee could have helped, but I didn’t have any. My old dog nosed through dry leaves for the best place to piss. For two weeks she and I had traveled, a road-trip start to my fiftieth year. I’ d envisioned back roads from Baltimore to Austin, campgrounds and books, barbecue, reunion with loved ones—my parents, especially, given Mom’s flagging health and chronic pain. Kaimin would gain canine prestige by marking territory at the Clinton Library in Little Rock and Faulkner’s Rowan Oak in Oxford. That had been the plan, and much of it had come to pass. But this day involved a different agenda. Today I’ d see a man about a song—and not just any song, but one that for more than two decades had held me with an inex- plicable grip. On its face, “Sitting on Top of the World” is just an old blues tune, first recorded in 1930 by the Mississippi Sheiks. But it’s a shapeshifter, too, having been performed or recorded hundreds of times in everything from jazz to bluegrass to Texas swing, folk, and rock. Ray Charles, Jack White, the Carter Family, the Carolina Chocolate Drops, Bill Frisell, The Grateful Dead—even the “Bye, bye, Miss American Pie” guy: they’ve all done it.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DECEMBER 23, 2008 RIVER ROCK CASINO RESORT PRESENTS THE ROBERT CRAY BAND LIVE AT THE RIVER ROCK SHOW THEATRE FRIDAY, APRIL 3 Robert Cray is one of the few blues artists who managed to cultivate a mainstream following in the 80’s and 90’s. In the course of a long-running career that began in 1974, he uniquely blended elements of rhythm and blues, pop, and traditional blues to win fans to a more contemporary blues sound. While laying down track after track of good- time, uptown, low-down blues, he’s inspired critics to praise his soulful vocal and instrumental artistry. Born in Columbus, Georgia, Cray's middle-class childhood as an "Army brat" stood in stark contrast to the impoverished Southern beginnings and Northern ghetto lifestyles of many blues greats. Cray had a number of musical influences gleaned from his father's voluminous record collection which included gospel, rhythm and blues, jazz and traditional blues. He practiced diligently and joined a band while in high school in Newport News, Virginia before he and his family picked up and moved to Tacoma, Washington. In 1969 at the age of sixteen, Cray found a kindred spirit in Richard Cousins, a local musician. The two of them embarked on a study of the blues while playing together in Tacoma bars. Their findings influenced the development of their own music and they travelled to Eugene, Oregon in the hopes of finding success in the progressive college town. The Robert Cray Band hit the bar circuit with Tom Murphy on drums and Cray as frontman on vocals and guitars.

As everyone is aware by now, it is business most unusual these days, and that affects Charlotte Blues Society as well as the businesses we support with live music. CBS has been taking the cues from City, State and Federal officials regarding our events and gatherings throughout the novel coronavirus / COVID-91 pandemic. The Stay at Home order by the County has indeed affected upcoming events, and we hope every one of our members and fellow music lovers will take this advice to heart and follow it, in order that this virus be allowed to run its course with the least transmission and loss of life. We love each of you and want you to take care of your health, and stay safe: “Stay Home” This is serious stuff friends. Robert Cray Bio 2014 With 5 Grammy Awards, 15 nominations, millions of record sales worldwide, and thousands of sold out performances, rock blues icon Robert Cray is considered “one of the greatest guitarists of his generation.” Rolling Stone Magazine in their April 2011 issue credits Cray with reinventing the blues with his “distinct razor sharp guitar playing” that “introduced a new generation of mainstream rock fans to the language and form of the blues” with the release of his Strong Persuader album in 1986. Since then, Cray has gone on to record fifteen Billboard charting studio albums and has written or performed with everyone from Eric Clapton to Stevie Ray Vaughan, from Bonnie Raitt to John Lee Hooker. Recently inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame at the age of 57, he is one of the youngest living legends to receive the prestigious honor. And while he can look back over an astonishing three-decade career punctuated by his trademark sound and distinct playing style, Robert Cray is too busy moving forward on an amazing journey that has him releasing his sixteenth studio album and embarking on yet another world tour. Nothin But Love will be released on August 28, 2012 and will be both his first collaboration with the Provogue record label and super-producer Kevin Shirley (Aerosmith, The Black Crowes, Journey). This ten-song stand includes material from all four Robert Cray Band members; Cray (vocals/guitar), Jim Pugh (keyboards), Richard Cousins (bass) and Tony Braunagel (drums) that blends blues, rock, soul and jazz with a lyric-sheet that examines the triumphs, fallouts and follies of life and love.

July 27, 2007 AMD Returns to the Crossroads With Eric Clapton -- Rhino Entertainment Brings AMD Opteron(TM) Processors Back to Record Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival 2007; Expect to Mix and Master on 'Barcelona' Workstations -- CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- AMD (NYSE:AMD) announced today that it will again chronicle Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival this year as it did in 2004, this time using multi-core AMD Opteron(TM) processor-based digital audio workstations (DAWs) and adding notebook PCs into the mix for smaller stages. The Crossroads Guitar Festival 2007 will be recorded on July 28, 2007 at Toyota Park in Chicago and will feature live performances by legendary guitar players including Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Jeff Beck, Willie Nelson, Vince Gill, Buddy Guy, Robert Randolph, Doyle Bramhall II, John Mayer, Jimmie Vaughan, Johnny Winter, Robert Cray, Sheryl Crow and many more artists. AMD Opteron processor-based DAWs were used by Clapton's team on his latest world tour to capture every live show in HD audio format. The mission-critical demands put on a computer by the particularly heavy load of recording live performances require flawless system performance. The AMD Direct Connect Architecture with HyperTransport helps insure that no system bottlenecks cause loss of performance data. Rhino Entertainment expects to mix and master a live concert 5.1 surround sound DVD of the Festival using systems based on the upcoming quad-core AMD Opteron processor codenamed "Barcelona." "As a live sound engineer, I cannot afford to worry about recording while I'm mixing live audio," said Robert Collins, live sound engineer for Eric Clapton's 2007 World Tour.

Blues musician, Albert Collins then recruited the band to play with him on his Pacific Northwest tour. During this time, Cray met John Belushi who gave him a small role in the 1978 film, National Lampoon’s Animal House. He may have in fact given the Saturday Night Live actor some inspiration in return since Belushi formed his Blues Brother act shortly thereafter. Cray and the band released their first album, Who's Been Talkin' in 1980 followed by Bad Influence in 1983 which shot to #1 on the UK Indie charts while Eric Clapton paid tribute to his colleague by covering the title song.
