In The Eye Of The Selector: Ancient-Style Prose Anthologies In Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) China Abstract The rapid growth of woodblock printing in sixteenth-century China not only transformed wenzhang (“literature”) as a category of knowledge, it also transformed the communities in which knowledge of wenzhang circulated. Twentieth-century scholarship described this event as an expansion of the non-elite reading public coinciding with the ascent of vernacular fiction and performance literature over stagnant classical forms. Because this narrative was designed to serve as a native genealogy for the New Literature Movement, it overlooked the crucial role of guwen (“ancient-style prose,” a term which denoted the everyday style of classical prose used in both preparing for the civil service examinations as well as the social exchange of letters, gravestone inscriptions, and other occasional prose forms among the literati) in early modern literary culture. This dissertation revises that narrative by showing how a diverse range of social actors used anthologies of ancient-style prose to build new forms of literary knowledge and shape new literary publics. -

Kaigai Shinwa/ New Stories from Overseas New Stories from Overseas Fūkō Mineta Translator’s Note When working on this English translation, I drew from two source texts: the original text from 1849 and Okuda Hisashi’s rendering into modern Japanese, published in 2009. I produced the first draft based on the modern Japanese version, and then went back over the original to make sure that the details and the feel were consistent. My overall guiding principle was to reproduce the tone of Japanese medieval epic war narratives like Taiheiki and Gempei jōsuiki that Mineta cites as his stylistic models in the preface. Kaigai Shinwa is a semi-historical text, based on actual events but leavened with embellishments and fabrications that Mineta hoped would appeal to a broad audience. Some of these flourishes must have been original, included for narrative effect, while others may have been reproductions of details from his Chinese source texts. Given that the historical interest of Kaigai Shinwa derives from it being an outsider’s view of a far-off war, of course I followed Mineta where he deviates from other accounts. There were, however, some cases where I felt it necessary to render mistaken names correctly or obscure names in a more familiar form (Mineta himself makes a similar editorial note, regarding incorrect dates in his sources that he adjusted; whether or not the dates he provides are in fact correct is a different matter). These instances are annotated at the end of the translation. It is also worth mentioning Mineta’s distinction between “Qing” and “China.” He tends to use Qing in reference to political and military entities, while China is used in a more essential way, designating race, culture, values, and a certain constant spirit of the commoners that is differentiated from the impermanent dynasties of the ruling class. -

Sieber Advisor East Asian Languages and Literatures ABSTRACT This dissertation is a historical ethnographic study on the act of reading in late imperial China. Focusing on the practice and representation of reading, I present a mosaic of how reading was conceptualized, perceived, conducted, and transmitted from the tenth to the eighteenth centuries. My central argument is that reading, or dushu, was an indispensable component in the tapestry of cultural life and occupied a unique position in the landscape of social history in late imperial China. Reading is not merely a psychological act of individuals, but also a set of complicated social practices determined and conditioned by social conventions. The dissertation consists of six chapters. Chapter 1 discusses motivation, scope, methodology, and sources of the study. I introduce a dozen different Chinese terms related to the act of reading. Chapter 2 examines theories and practices of how children were taught to read. Focusing on four main pedagogical procedures, namely memorization, vocalization, punctuation, and explication, I argue that the loud chanting of texts and the constant anxiety of reciting were two of the most prominent themes that ran through both the descriptive and prescriptive discourses on the history of reading in late imperial ii China. -
The Taizhou Movement
The Taizhou Movement Being Mindful in Sixteenth Century China Johanna Lidén Academic dissertation for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History of Religion at Stockholm University to be publicly defended on Saturday 8 December 2018 at 10.00 in hörsal 7, Universitetsvägen 10 D. Abstract The aim of this thesis is to define and analyze the religious ideas, praxis and organizations of the Taizhou movement using the earliest sources from the Ming dynasty. The Taizhou movement originated with a salt merchant named Wang Gen (1493–1541), who became a disciple of the well-known Neo-Confucian philosopher Wang Yangming (1472–1529). Wang Gen’s thoughts were similar to his, but his ideas about protecting and respecting the self were new. These ideas and the pursuit of making one’s mind calm inspired his followers who, like Wang Gen, tried to put them into practice. The thesis contextualizes Wang Gen and some of his followers who where active in the sixteenth century such as Yan Jun, Luo Rufang and He Xinyin. It contains texts which have not been translated into English before. Contrary to previous research, the thesis proposes that the Taizhou practitioners did not form a “school” in the strict sense of the word but became a “movement”. The reason was that their ideas corresponded to the anxieties and concerns of people from all levels of society and that they engaged in social and religious activities on the local level. Their ideas and praxis are heterogeneous, a result of the free discussions that were held in private academies. The religious praxis of the Taizhou movement included singing, reciting, individual and communal meditation, discussions and ethical commitments. -
