Gruenhagen Graduate Faculty Representative Radhika Gajjala, Committee Co-Chair Jeremy Wallach ii ABSTRACT Kristine Blair and Radhika Gajjala, Committee Co-Chairs Forum-based role-playing games are a rich, yet barely researched subset of text- based digital gaming. They are a form of storytelling where narratives are created through acts of play by multiple people in an online space, combining collaboration and improvisation. This dissertation acts as a pilot study for exploring these games in their full complexity at the intersection of play, narrative, and fandom. Building on theories of interactivity, digital storytelling, and fan fiction studies, it highlights forum games’ most unique features, and proves that they are is in no way liminal or secondary to more popular forms of role-playing. The research is based on data drawn from a large sample of forums of various genres. One hundred sites were explored through close textual analysis in order to outline their most common features. The second phase of the project consisted of nine months of participant observation on select forums, in order to gain a better understanding of how their rules and practices influence the emergent narratives. Participants from various sites contributed their own interpretations of forum gaming through a series of ethnographic interviews. This did not only allow agency to the observed communities to voice their thoughts and explain their practices, but also spoke directly to the key research question of why people are drawn to forum gaming. -

Master Thesis Project Artificial Intelligence Adaptation in Video Games Author: Anastasiia Zhadan Supervisor: Aris Alissandrakis Examiner: Welf Löwe Reader: Narges Khakpour Semester: VT 2018 Course Code: 4DV50E Subject: Computer Science Abstract One of the most important features of a (computer) game that makes it mem- orable is an ability to bring a sense of engagement. This can be achieved in numerous ways, but the most major part is a challenge, often provided by in-game enemies and their ability to adapt towards the human player. How- ever, adaptability is not very common in games. Throughout this thesis work, aspects of the game control systems that can be improved in order to be adapt- able were studied. Based on the results gained from the study of the literature related to artificial intelligence in games, a classification of games was de- veloped for grouping the games by the complexity of the control systems and their ability to adapt different aspects of enemies behavior including individual and group behavior. It appeared that only 33% of the games can not be con- sidered adaptable. This classification was then used to analyze the popularity of games regarding their challenge complexity. Analysis revealed that simple, familiar behavior is more welcomed by players. However, highly adaptable games have got competitively high scores and excellent reviews from game critics and reviewers, proving that adaptability in games deserves further re- search. För att undersöka detta skapades en artefakt som är en modifierad nivå till spelet Torchlight 2 (Runic Games 2012). Denna artefakt består av två versioner där det enda som skiljer dem åt är hur spelaren får välja förmågor: i den ena får spelaren tillgång till all information direkt i början, medan spelaren i den andra får så lite information om varje val som möjligt. Dessa två versioner spelades av 5 deltagare var, som både observerades under genomspelningen och intervjuades om deras spelupplevelse. Resultatet av dessa genomspelningar utvärderades i en jämförande analys som pekade på att det fanns tendenser till att informationsmängden som presenteras kan påverka spelarens flow, men att inga slutsatser om förutsägbarhetens inverkan kunde dras.
