If you look at the shelves of many a monastery bookshop you will however find an increasing number of books written for those who take inspiration from St Benedict without taking the habit or the veil. Authors have shown that the wisdom of St Benedict can be applied anywhere from business management to sport to family life. Oblates are people who go one stage further and actually formalise their regard for St Benedict by forging a permanent spiritual bond with a particular monastery. This approach is not for everyone; there are those who benefit more from a freer approach, taking a dose of Benedictine spirituality now and then as needed, and freely looking elsewhere for spiritual nourishment as well. If one were to describe an Oblate it might be best to say what an oblate is not. Oblates do not take vows or make solemn profession like monks or nuns. For married Oblates the vows made at their wedding take precedence over any Benedictine undertakings; indeed one could say that for every Oblate the obligations of family and of justice and charity in daily life outrank any Benedictine considerations of a spiritual nature. Oblates live out their baptismal vocation like everyone else, but look to the Benedictine tradition for wisdom and support in this undertaking. Oblates don't remove themselves from parish life but bring a Benedictine dimension to their commitments within the local Church. How does this work in practice? It varies from monastery to monastery, but the paragraphs which follow outline something of what happens at Glenstal Abbey.

    Christian Monastic Communities Living in Harmony with the Environment: an Overview of Positive Trends and Best Practices 1

    Christian monastic communities living in harmony with the environment: an overview of positive trends and best practices 1 Abstract This paper explores the relationship between Christian monastic communities and nature and the natural environment, a new field for this journal. After reviewing their historical origins and evolution, and discussing their key doctrinal principles regarding the environment, the paper provides an overview of the best practices developed by these communities of various sizes that live in natural surroundings, and reviews promising new trends. These monastic communities are the oldest self-organised communities in the Old World with a continuous history of land and environmental management, and have generally had a positive impact on nature and landscape conservation. Their experience in adapting to and overcoming environmental and economic crises is highly relevant in modern-day society as a whole and for environmental managers and policy makers in particular. This paper also argues that the efforts made by a number of monastic communities, based on the principles of their spiritual traditions, to become more environmentally coherent should be encouraged and publicized to stimulate more monastic communities to follow their example and thus to recapture the environmental and spiritual coherence of their ancestors. This October, we traveled to Rome with Jesuits from all over the world for the Society of Jesus’ 36th General Congregation (GC36). This historic meeting was the 36th time the global Society has come together since the first General Congregation in 1558, nearly two years after St. Ignatius died. General Congregations are always summoned upon the death or resignation of the Jesuits’ Superior General, and this year we came together to elect a Jesuit to succeed Fr. Adolfo Nicolás, SJ, who has faithfully served as Superior General since 2008. After prayerful consideration, we elected Fr. Arturo Sosa Abascal, SJ, a Jesuit priest from Venezuela. Father Sosa is warm, friendly, and down-to-earth, with a great sense of humor that puts people at ease. He has offered his many gifts to intellectual, educational, and social apostolates at all levels in service to the Gospel and the universal Church. One of his most impressive achievements came during his time as rector of la Universidad Católica del Táchira, where he helped the student body grow from 4,000 to 8,000 students and gave the university a strong social orientation to study border issues in Venezuela. A Glossary ofTerms Used in Ignatian and]esuit Circles." The booklet is published by the Ignatian Programs/Spiritual Development offICe of Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio. The second source, Beoneodicotionoal)', a pamphlet published by the Admissions Office of Benedictine University, was designed to be "a useful reference guide to help parents and students master the language of the college experience at Benedictine University." This booklet is not an alphabetical glossary but a directory to various offices and services.
