Coats Committee Chair Department Chair Dean of the Graduate School May 2018 COPYRIGHT BY John Brigance Christie-Searles 2018 Published by the Graduate School ABSTRACT This research illuminates the partnership of a particular civil society actor, Benedictine monasteries, in achieving developmental goals and delivery outcomes for education and health in Tanzania. Faith based organizations (FBOs) like these Benedictine monasteries quietly persevered with their work. These monasteries without governmental support were able to achieve similar results in areas of Tanzania deprived of infrastructure and consistent governmental administrative attention. Monastic apostolate fervor is similar to the professionalism exhibited by international aid organizations and nongovernmental organizations in their desire to meet the needs of the poor. Motivations are complex and varied from evangelization to political and strategic agendas to economic paradigm promulgation (socialism, capitalism, and communism). The analysis used mixed-methods for the purpose of testing the hypotheses. There are two dependent variables: educational attainment and infant mortality. These two variables are chosen because of linkages to government spending and government activities associated with educational attainment and infant mortality is well documented. Regression analysis was used to test outcomes in health and education based on the independent variables of rural percentage of population, population, Benedictine presence, and per capita income by region. Case studies will focus on four distinct regions within Tanzania, two in the north (Mwanza and Shinyanga) and two in the south (Rukwa and Ruvuma). Benedictine monasteries indeed fill the void of governmental services in Rukwa and Ruvuma regions and support the achievement of higher educational attainment and lower infant mortality rates in those regions. ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The researcher would like to thank the following Benedictine communities, St. Ottillien, Mvimwa Abbey, Hanga Abbey, Ndanda Abbey, Peramiho Abbbey, Benedictine Sisters of Erie, Alliance for International Monasticism, St. Meinrad Abbey, St. Johns Abbey.     6 The Foundations of Feminization EN AND WOMEN, as far as we can tell, participated equally in Christianity until about the thirteenth century. If anything, men were more prominent in the Church not Monly in clerical positions, which were restricted to men, but in religious life, which was open to both men and women. Only around the time of Bernard, Dominic, and Francis did gender differences emerge, and these differences can be seen both in demographics and in the quality of spirituality. Because these changes occurred rapidly and only in the Latin church, innate or quasi- innate differences between the sexes cannot by themselves account for the increase in women’s interest in Christian- ity or the decrease in men’s interest. In fact, the medieval feminization of Christianity followed on three movements in the Church which had just begun at the time: the preaching of a new affective spirituality and bridal mysticism by Bernard of Clairvaux;1 a Frauenbewegung, a kind of women’s movement; and Scholasticism, a school of theology. This concurrence of trends caused the Western church to become a difficult place for men.     65 THE RULE OF ST. BENEDICT AND MODERN LIBERAL AUTHORITY LINDA ZAGZEBSKI University of Oklahoma Abstract. In this paper I examine the sixth century Rule of St. Benedict, and argue that the authority structure of Benedictine communities as described in that document satisfi es well-known principles of authority defended by Joseph Raz. Th is should lead us to doubt the common assumption that pre-modern models of authority violate the modern ideal of the autonomy of the self. I suggest that what distinguishes modern liberal authority from Benedictine authority is not the principles that justify it, but rather the fi rst order beliefs for the sake of which authority is sought by the individual, and the degree of trust between the authority and the subject. I. INTRODUCTION One of the ideas embraced by the West during the Enlightenment was the idea that the only authority that needs no justifi cation is the authority of the self over the self. Any other kind of authority is derivative. Phi- losophers recognized that we cannot live without political authority, so an important project of the early Enlightenment was to show that the au- thority of the state can ultimately be justifi ed by the authority of the self. Other kinds of authority were permitted to disappear, particularly moral and religious authority, both of which are still commonly dismissed as incompatible with personal autonomy. My purpose in this paper is not to critique modern ideas of autonomy or the self. Instead, I want to re- examine the common assumption that pre-modern models of authority violate the modern ideal of the ultimate authority of the self.
