NOVEMBER The Cyclones will take on North Dakota State on Friday evening at 7 p.m., followed by South Dakota State at 4 Harold Nichols Cyclone Open 3 Champs 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. 12 Drexel L, 21-16 2. NDSU and SDSU are Big 12 affi liate members that joined the conference last season. ISU and NDSU have 18 at Lindenwood Open 9 Place-Winners only met on four other occasions, with the Cyclones holding a 3-1 advantage in the series. Iowa State will be looking to avenge a 25-16 loss suff ered in Fargo last season. 26 Rider (Cy Stephens) L, 22-15 3. The Cyclones and Jackrabbits fi rst met in 1952, and since then Iowa State holds the edge in the series, 9-1. DECEMBER SDSU notched their fi rst win over ISU last season, 27-9. 1-2 at Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational 29th 4. Last weekend, Iowa State dropped a pair of duals, falling to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. This broke a four match win streak for the Cyclones, the best since January of 2016. (Las Vegas, Nev.) 5. Ian Parker performed extremely well for the Cyclones in his debut at 141 pounds. He started the weekend 9 Wyoming L, 24-12 with a 4-2 decision against No. 26 Mike Longo and then upended two-time defending national champion No. 4 Dean Heil by 3-1 decision. Parker was named the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week for his eff orts. JANUARY 6. Parker’s win over the national champ makes him the fi rst Cyclone to defeat a reigning champ since David 5 *Northern Colorado L, 22-20 Zabriskie beat Missouri’s Mark Ellis in 2010. Since the weight class change in 1999, only six Iowa State 7 Oregon State W, 24-16 grapplers have accomplished this feat in dual action. 12-13 at Virginia Duals 7. ISU started the year 0-4 in duals, but has since gone on to post a 6-3 mark. Iowa State’s latest triumph came Virginia W, 21-18 at the hands of West Virginia. Arizona State L, 25-13 8. The win over WVU is the fi rst Big 12 victory at home for Iowa State since Feb. 14, 2016, which was also against Old Dominion W, 25-12 West Virginia. Lock Haven W-Forfeit 9. Iowa State’s hot streak started at the Virginia Duals. In Hampton, the Cyclones took down Virginia, Old Fresno State W, 25-16 Dominion, Lock Haven and Fresno State. Their only defeat came at the hands of eventual tournament 21 *West Virginia W, 25-16 champion, Arizona State. 26 *at Oklahoma L, 21-16 10. Iowa State has two wrestlers receiving national rankings. Ian Parker (20, NR, 20) and Jarrett Degen (NR, 18, 19) 28 *at Oklahoma State L, 31-3 are both in this week’s FloWrestling, Intermat and the Trackwrestling polls. 11. Prior to the defeat of Oregon State, the Cyclones hadn’t won a dual since Nov. 26, 2016. ISU also broke a nine- FEBRUARY match home losing streak, which dated back to Feb. 14, 2016. 2 *at North Dakota State 7 p.m. 12. In total, 22 wrestlers have competed for Iowa State in dual competition this season, which is well over half of 4 *at South Dakota State 2 p.m. the roster. The Cyclones have featured a diff erent lineup in all 10 duals this season. 9 *Fresno State 7 p.m. 13. Dresser and his staff have had to manage a very young Iowa State squad this season. Of the 33 Iowa State wrestlers, only 16 of them were on the team last year. The team also consists of 24 underclassmen (freshmen 10 *at Northern Iowa 7 p.m. or sophomores.) 18 %Iowa 2 p.m. 14. In 12 dual competitions, the Cyclones have four wrestlers with seven or more wins. Chase Straw (7), Jarrett Degen (8), Dane Pestano (8) and Marcus Harrington (8) have been anchors in the Iowa State lineup. MARCH 15. Those four, along with Sam Colbray (13), have all tallied 13 or more takedowns in duals this season. Pestano 3-4 #Big 12 Championship All Day (32), Degen (26), Straw (19), Harrington (19) and Colbray (13). (Tulsa, Okla.) 16. Last year, Iowa State wrestled in 13 duals. They recorded 46 individual wins and 124 total takedowns. This 15-17 $NCAA Championships All Day season, the Cyclones have racked up 57 individual wins and 166 takedowns in only 12 competitions. The duo has combined for eight tournament wins and 29 total bonus-point victories. %Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series #Big 12 Championship 18. The Cyclones’ top recruit in the class of 2017 took the mat for the fi rst time at the Willy Myers Open. Austin $ NCAA Championships Gomez went 2-0 to win the 133-pound bracket, knocking off teammate Markus Simmons in sudden victory in the fi nals. He followed this up with a Duhawk Open title. Gomez is now 5-0 with four tech-falls. Chase Straw also gritted out a close match as he picked up a 4-3 victory against Justin Thomas. The Cyclones won the final three matches of the evening, taking 184, 197 and 285 pounds, but it wasn't enough to top Oklahoma. Dane Pestano racked up ISU's only bonus-point victory of the evening, taking down Matthew Waddell by 11-3 major decision. Sam Colbray churned out a 2-1 win in sudden victory over Andrew Dixon and Marcus Harrington finished the dual on a high note for the Cyclones, defeating Connor Small by 7-4 decision. CARDINAL AND GOLD MAKE IT FOUR IN A ROW AGAINST WEST VIRGINIA Iowa State won its last four matches, including a decisive by Marcus Harrington at 285 in the final match, to claim a come-from-behind 25-16 dual victory over West Virginia Sunday afternoon in Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones were down 17-7 with four matches to go until Danny Bush jumpstarted the comeback at 174 pounds with a pin over Parker VonEgidy in a mere 1:07. Bush’s pin spearheaded the Cyclones’ first Big 12 win of the season. After going down 11-0 early, Jarrett Degen and Chase Straw put the Cyclones on the board heading into intermission. Degen won by 18-5 major decision over Kyle Rea and Straw posted a 13-6 victory against Zachary Moore. After Bush’s fall at 174, Dane Pestano cut the Mountaineer lead to 17-16 with a 9-4 decision over Brenden McRill at 184 pounds. Pestano fell down 4-2, but rallied with a pair of takedowns in the final two periods. Sam Colbray then gave the Cyclones a 17-16 lead with a 6-5 sudden victory win against Jacob Smith (197). Smith was called for stalling twice, with his second allowing Colbray to win with 0:38 seconds left in overtime. Harrington then capped off the Cyclone victory at 285 pounds by recording the fall at the 1:04 mark against Brandon Ngati. IOWA STATE GOES 4-1 AT VIRGINIA DUALS, WINS SILVER BRACKET Fresh off their fi rst dual win of the season, the Cyclones kept it rolling in Hampton. The Cardinal and Gold picked up four more victories and won the silver bracket behind a 4-1 performance. The Cyclones defeated Virginia (21-18), Old Domin- ion (25-12), Lock Haven (Forfeit) and Fresno State (25-16). ISU received several solid individual performances. Kanen Storr (4-0) and Jarrett Degen (3-0) both turned in perfect records on the weekend. Rider’s three bonus-point victories proved to be the diff erence in the contest. Redshirt freshmen Kanen Storr and Jarrett Degen won their matches by decision at 141 and 149 pounds, while redshirt senior Dane Pestano, redshirt freshman Sam Colbray and redshirt junior Marcus Harrington were victorious at 184-heavy- weight. The dual was held in Stephens Auditorium, the fi rst of its kind for the Iowa State wrestling team. 1,345 fans packed into the performing arts center to cheer on the Cyclones. Iowa State dropped bonus-point losses at 125 and 133 pounds, which were two big victories in Rider’s winning eff orts. Following the break, redshirt sophomore Chase Straw was pitted against Rider’s No. 8 Archie Colgan. Straw fought tough in this match and appeared would send it into sudden victory. Colgan earned a reversal as time expired in the third period to win the match, 13-11.
