In his initial year at the helm, Jackson coached two NCAA individual Indiana ’10 champions en route to a third-place finish at the 2010 NCAA Championships. Jackson’s efforts with the Cyclone squad in his inaugural campaign didn’t go unnoticed, as he was honored as Amateur Wrestling News magazine’s 2010 Rookie Coach of the Year. Jackson coached the ISU grapplers to a 13-2 overall dual record, Trent Paulson with a perfect 4-0 mark in Big 12 action. In 2010-11, Jackson’s squad finished the year with a 9-10 mark in dual competition. Assistant Coach The year was highlighted by senior Jon Reader, who went 39-0 en route to an individual Third Season at ISU NCAA title at 174 pounds. After a down year in 2011-12, Jackson was able to rally his troops and bounce Iowa State ’07 back strongly in 2012-13. After a 1-3 start, Jackson’s Cyclones won 10 of their last 12 duals, finishing second at the 2013 Big 12 Championships and 11th at the NCAA Championships. Dana Vote A 12th-place team finish at the NCAA Championships kept the Cyclones in the Director of Operations nation’s top-15 in 2014, as Kyven Gadson (4th - 197), Michael Moreno (5th - 165) and Earl Hall, Jr. (8th - 125) each worked their way onto the NCAA podium. Two wrestlers First Season at ISU crowned Big 12 Champions (Gadson and Lelund Weatherspoon), as Jackson coached Buena Vista ’08 Weatherspoon to becoming the Cyclones’ first freshman Big 12 champion since David Zabriske in 2007. Jackson coached the 2014-15 Iowa State wrestling squad to its best regular season performance since 2010. The Cyclones finished with an 11-2 dual record (.846) and finished the season ranked No. 8 in the coaches’ poll. ISU finished runner-up Kyven Gadson champions to Oklahoma State at the 2015 Big 12 Championships, and qualified seven grapplers for the NCAA Championships. Graduate Assistant At the 2015 NCAA Championships, Jackson coached Kyven Gadson to a perfect First Season at ISU 5-0 record, including a fall in the 197-pound finals. Gadson credited Jackson for showing him the move that he used, “The Gadson”, to pin Kyle Snyder in the Championship Iowa State ’14 bout. The Cyclones sent six wrestlers to the 2016 NCAA Championship in New York City. Jackson’s squad put three wrestlers on the podium, with Earl Hall (7th - 133), Lelund Weatherspoon (6th - 174) and Patrick Downey (5th - 197) all earned All-America honors. Weatherspoon was the only unseeded wrestler to reach the semifinals at any weight. Jackson was named the 2016 Cadet World Team head coach, where he led a group of the Nation’s best to a runner-up finish at the 2016 Cadet World Championships. The second-place finish is tied for the best in USA Cadet World team history. Jackson steered the team to three individual gold medals, two silver and three bronze. Under Jackson’s tutelage at Iowa State, ISU has placed at least one wrestler at the top of the podium every year at the conference tournament.

  • Another Olympics Is Over for Wrestling by Olympic Champion John Peterson #42
Another Olympics is over for Wrestling By Olympic Champion John Peterson #42 The excitement is over, another Olympics is history. There were some great matches! Mindorashivili, of Georgia, pinning Russia’s returning World Champion, Georgy Ketoev, at 84kg. in the semi-finals caught my attention. Actually Ketoev is a Georgian, born in Tbilisi. With a war going on back home that had to have been an interesting match up! Athens champion, Taymazov, Uzbekistan became heavy weight champion again! He proved that he is the true champion by defeating Russian 2000 Olympic Champion David Mussulbes, now wrestling for Slovakia in the semi-finals and in the finals Russian Akhmedov, who beat last year’s World Champion to make the Russian Olympic team. They all are from the same area of the Caucuses. And what can you say about Buvaysa Saytiev? He won the World’s as a 19 year old in Atlanta. He joins the all time greats by winning his third Olympic Gold to go with his 6 World titles. That tall thin body proves again that anybody can win on the mat! Thank you Tony Black for helping us navigate through the system to be on the right mat at the right time. For those of us who are “computer challenged”, you made it easier to handle. I proved that I am still a wrestling fanatic by getting up at 3:30 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. to watch some of the wrestle-backs and finals. And how about Henry? Congratulations Henry Cejudo! Welcome to the club of Olympic champions! Thank you Terry Brands for pouring yourself into coaching in the same way you did as an athlete.
