2016-17 SCHEDULE CYCLONE HEADLINES NOVEMBER 1. Iowa State opens the season with a pair of Big 12 duals to start the season. The Cyclones will take on 4 at South Dakota State* 7:00 p.m. South Dakota State on Friday evening at 7 p.m. and will close out the weekend with a matchup against 6 at North Dakota State* 2:00 p.m. the Bison of North Dakota State on Sunday at 2 p.m. 13 Cycloen Open All Day 2. In 2015-16, ISU posted a 10-6 dual mark. The double-digit wins marked the second-consecutive season 26 at Northern Colorado* 3:00p.m. that a -led squad won 10 or more duals in a season. 6 at Wyoming* 3:00 p.m. 3. Five Cyclones begin the year ranked in the national polls. Earl Hall (5, 5, 4), Gabe Moreno (17, 16, 14), Lelund Weatherspoon (7, 6, 7), Patrick Downey (7, 9, 6) and Marcus Harrington (17, 19, 19) all begin the DECEMBER year slotted in the top-20 in FloWrestling, TheOpenMat and Intermat rankings. 2-3 at Cliff Keen Invitational All Day 4. Hall (7), Weatherspoon (6) and Downey (5) are all coming off of All-America finishes in 2015-16. Iowa State’s lineup returns many familiar faces. In total, 15 members of this year’s team saw action as 14 at North Carolina 6:00 p.m. a starter in dual competition in 2015-16. Those 15 wrestlers accounted for 85 percent of Iowa State’s 20 Northern Iowa 7:00 p.m. total dual wins last season. 27 Oklahoma*# 7:00 p.m. 8. Hall and Weatherspoon are both knocking on the door of 100 career wins. Hall has tallied 81 career 29 Oklahoma State* 2:00 p.m. wins, and Weatherspoon has compiled 70 career victories. In 2015-16, Hall compiled 33 total wins, while Weatherspoon racked up 27. FEBRUARY 10 at Pittsburgh 6:00 p.m. 9. After shuffling around his lineup quite often last season, Coach Jackson’s lineup features several weight changes. Moreno will be bumping down to 141 pounds, Dane Pestano will be cutting down to 12 at West Virginia* 1:00 p.m. 165 pounds and Downey is set to wrestle at 184 pounds. 19 Minnesota 2:00 p.m. 10. Iowa State’s dual season is jam-packed with Big 12 matchups. The Cardinal and Gold are slated to face MARCH seven out of the nine other Big 12 and Big 12 affiliate squads. 4-5 Big 12 Championships* All Day 11. In 2017, the Big 12 Championship makes its debut at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Okla. The conference (Tulsa, Okla.) championship will be hosted at the BOK Center in 2017 and 2018. 16-18 NCAA Championships All Day 12. The 2017 NCAA Championship is returning to the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo. Last year, the (St. Louis, Mo.) In his initial year at the helm, Jackson coached two NCAA individual Indiana ’10 champions en route to a third-place finish at the 2010 NCAA Championships. Jackson’s efforts with the Cyclone squad in his inaugural campaign didn’t go unnoticed, as he was honored as News magazine’s 2010 Rookie Coach of the Year. Jackson coached the ISU grapplers to a 13-2 overall dual record, Trent Paulson with a perfect 4-0 mark in Big 12 action. In 2010-11, Jackson’s squad finished the year with a 9-10 mark in dual competition. Assistant Coach The year was highlighted by senior Jon Reader, who went 39-0 en route to an individual Third Season at ISU NCAA title at 174 pounds. After a down year in 2011-12, Jackson was able to rally his troops and bounce Iowa State ’07 back strongly in 2012-13. After a 1-3 start, Jackson’s Cyclones won 10 of their last 12 duals, finishing second at the 2013 Big 12 Championships and 11th at the NCAA Championships. Dana Vote A 12th-place team finish at the NCAA Championships kept the Cyclones in the Director of Operations nation’s top-15 in 2014, as Kyven Gadson (4th - 197), Michael Moreno (5th - 165) and Earl Hall, Jr. (8th - 125) each worked their way onto the NCAA podium. Two wrestlers First Season at ISU crowned Big 12 Champions (Gadson and Lelund Weatherspoon), as Jackson coached Buena Vista ’08 Weatherspoon to becoming the Cyclones’ first freshman Big 12 champion since David Zabriske in 2007. Jackson coached the 2014-15 Iowa State wrestling squad to its best regular season performance since 2010. The Cyclones finished with an 11-2 dual record (.846) and finished the season ranked No. 8 in the coaches’ poll. ISU finished runner-up Kyven Gadson champions to Oklahoma State at the 2015 Big 12 Championships, and qualified seven grapplers for the NCAA Championships. Graduate Assistant At the 2015 NCAA Championships, Jackson coached Kyven Gadson to a perfect First Season at ISU 5-0 record, including a fall in the 197-pound finals. Gadson credited Jackson for showing him the move that he used, “The Gadson”, to in the Championship Iowa State ’14 bout. The Cyclones sent six wrestlers to the 2016 NCAA Championship in . Jackson’s squad put three wrestlers on the podium, with Earl Hall (7th - 133), Lelund Weatherspoon (6th - 174) and Patrick Downey (5th - 197) all earned All-America honors. Weatherspoon was the only unseeded wrestler to reach the semifinals at any weight. Jackson was named the 2016 Cadet World Team head coach, where he led a group of the Nation’s best to a runner-up finish at the 2016 Cadet World Championships. The second-place finish is tied for the best in USA Cadet World team history. Jackson steered the team to three individual gold medals, two silver and three bronze. Under Jackson’s tutelage at Iowa State, ISU has placed at least one wrestler at the top of the podium every year at the conference tournament. In seven seasons, the Lansing, Mich. native, has coached four NCAA champions, 11 All-Americans and seven Big 12 champions. Prior to being hired at Iowa State, Jackson served eight years (2001-08) as the National Freestyle Coach for USA Wrestling. He was the first full-time coach for the organization and took two ’ teams to the Olympics. Two of his athletes – (2004) and (2008) – won gold medals. His 2001 freestyle team won the World Cup, the 2003 team placed second and the 2006 squad finished third at that meet. Before becoming the nation’s head freestyle coach, Jackson was a freestyle resident coach at the Olympic Training Center, head coach for the U.S. Army team at Fort Carson (1998-2001) and head coach of the Sunkist youth development program. During that tenure, he personally trained 2000 Olympic champion Brandon Slay. As a competitive wrestler, Jackson established himself as one of the world’s best in the 1990s, capturing gold medals at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain and at the World Championships in both 1991 (Varna, Bulgaria) and 1995 (Atlanta). He is one of just five wrestlers in U.S. history with three career world-level titles. Adding to an already impressive list of accomplishments competing at the international level, Jackson also won two Pan American Games titles as a U.S. World Team member in 1993 and 1995. He won three U.S. Open titles, placing second five times. In 1998, Jackson became the first American to win the prestigious Takhti IOWA STATE RETURNS THREE ALL-AMERICANS Cup in Tehran, Iran. Jackson’s success earned him a number of major awards, including the 1995 Award as National Freestyle Wrestler of the Year, 1992 Amateur Wrestling At the 2016 NCAA Championship, three Iowa State wrestlers earned All-America News Man of the Year and 1991 USA Wrestling and USOC Wrestler of the Year. As a college wrestler, he attended Louisiana State and earned All-America honors honors. Hall will be in search of becoming the 37th wrestler in school history to notch 100 or more career wins. The last Cyclone to eclipse the century mark was Jon Reader in 2011. Reader tallied 124 career victories, which ranks tied for eighth all-time among Cardinal and Gold grapplers.
