CALIFORNIADREAMIN: Jake Varner wins Olympic gold medal for U.S. By Craig Sesker USA Wrestling

Jake Varner captured an Olympic gold medal on Sunday afternoon. John Sachs photo.LONDON – It was one of the last gold-medal moments for the United States on the final day of the 2012 Olympic Games. And it belonged to American Jake Varner and the U.S. team.Varner realized a lifelong dream when he capped a phenomenal performance by winning an Olympic gold medal at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. on Sunday afternoon before a sellout crowd of 6,500 fans at ExCeL North Arena 2.Varner, a California native, took control early to sweep Ukraine’s Valeri Andriitsev 1-0, 1-0 in the Olympic gold-medal finals.Varner scored early in both periods – on an ankle pick in the first period and on a pushout in the second period – to reach the pinnacle of his sport.“Every time I step on the mat I expect to win,” Varner said. “This is exciting. I came in here with a goal of winning a gold medal and I did my job for our team. I’m just enjoying the moment right now. I will probably have some chocolate milk or a Mountain Dew to celebrate.”Following his gold-medal victory, the normally low-key Varner grabbed an American flag and ran around the mat while pumping his right fist. He then dropped to his knees while taking in his dramatic moment. He walked off the mat and jumped into the arms of his mentor, close friend, coach and training partner, 2004 Olympic gold medalist , as the crowd stood and roared. Varner trains with Sanderson as a member of the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club in State College, Pa.

“It’s awesome to have Cael in my corner,” Varner said. “He’s an Olympic champion and I’m an Olympic champion now. I’m still not sure I’m in his league. I can’t thank him enough for everything. I owe him a lot, that’s for sure.”Jake Varner is an Olympic champion - that’s what he wanted to do since he was a little kid,” Sanderson said. “It’s awesome. I’m really excited for him. He loves to compete. He showed great composure out there, and that’s why he got a gold medal.”Varner earned $250,000 from the Living the Dream Medal Fund, supported mainly by the wrestling community, for his gold-medal victory.“That’s pretty sweet,” Varner said. “You don’t wrestle for the money, you wrestle for the gold medal. The money is icing on the cake. It’s a nice chunk of change and it’s nice to have.”Varner, 26, a two-time NCAA champion for Iowa State University, was competing in his first Olympic Games. He is a native of Bakersfield, Calif.Andriitsev was second in the European Championships this year and is a past Junior World champion. The U.S. captured multiple Olympic freestyle gold medals for the first time since 1996.

Varner joins teammate , who won an Olympic freestyle gold medal for the U.S. on Friday. won an Olympic bronze medal for the U.S. on Saturday. Burroughs was one of the first people to congratulate Varner after his gold-medal win.The U.S. won its 49th Olympic gold medal in freestyle wrestling. The U.S. finished a close third in the unofficial team standings, under FILA scoring. The U.S. finished with 38 points. Russia and Georgia tied for first with 40 points. It’s been a tremendous tournament for us, and what a way to cap it off with Jake’s gold medal,” U.S. Coach said. “We’ve made a lot of progress as a team. We don’t come for third, we come for first, so we’ve still got work to do. But I really like where we’re headed.”In the semifi- nals, Varner scored on a pushout early in the third period to earn a hard-fought 0-2, 1-0, 1-0 win over Georgia’s Georgi Gogshelidze, a past World champion and 2008 Olympic bronze medalist.

Varner scored on two takedowns – on an ankle pick in the first period and a throw-by in the second period – to sweep Canada’s Khetag Pliev 1-0, 1-0 in the quarterfinals.Varner opened by earning a hard-fought 1-0, 0-1, 1-0 win over past World bronze medalist Kurban Kurbanov of Uzbekistan. Varner was the aggressor the whole way and his persistence paid off when he spun behind Kurbanov midway through the period for the eventual winning takedown.American Jared Frayer dropped his opening match to Ali Shabanau of Belarus at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. Frayer won a ball draw after a scoreless second period, but was unable to finish in the leg clinch.“Jared just made a mistake out of the clinch,” U.S. Olympic Coach John Smith said. “He had the leg up and then dropped the leg. We obviously weren’t able to finish and it cost us.”

Shabanau won the match 3-0, 1-0. Frayer was eliminated when Shabanau fell short of making the finals. Frayer told reporters it was the last match of his career.Frayer, 33, an NCAA runner-up for Oklahoma, was wrestling in his first Olympics. He is an assistant coach at Oklahoma.“It’s frustrating because I know how much the coaches put into me and I know how good I was feeling,” Frayer said. “I ran into an unorthodox guy and I didn’t wrestle the way I’m capable of. It’s hard.” Statewide Directors Association Directors Josh Adams San Joaquin Wrestling Paul Bristow Association (SJWA) Coaching Certification 209-765-5203 209-358-5538 California USA Wrestling Inc. State Chairman’s Report: Duane Morgan, State Chairman

Welcome back to another year to another year of wrestling with California USAWrestling the onlyofficial governing bodyof amateur wrestling for clubs and all age groups in California.

Every year seems to have it’sexciting high points and this year was no exception withthe major highlight Be sure to follow us on was Californian Jake Varner winning the Gold medal at the Olympic Games in London. Jake was a product of Bakersfield High School where he was a 2 time state high champion and then won 2 NCAA Championships at Iowa State. Jake participated in California USAWrestling programs at age group levels and anchored the California at the Junior Nationals, and Junior dualsteams multiple times.

California had great success at the Cadet and Junior Nationals Championshipsbringing home 5 national Champions with Zahid Valencia,AnthonyValencia,, and Cadence Lee. They all did a great job and all of themwill be returning this next summer to repeat as champions. Our girls teams went 1st and 2nd place in the Junior Duals and the also won the National Championships in the Cadet and Junior Divisions.

Internationally,California sent 5 girls to the Cadet Fila World Championships withMarina Doi winning her first world championships with her sister, Regina placing 5th and Cadence Lee placing fifth withAlyssa LaFrancis andAnastasia Lobisinger turning in outstanding performances representing the United States.

I know you are as proud of these athletes’ accomplishments as I am. Remember they did not get to these pinnacles by themselves. Their families made sacrifices, the community backed ever one of them, and the wrestling structure provided by California USA Wrestling provided programming to help guide them and provide a venue to hone their skills and prepare to meet their goals.

On that note I would like to thank all of the volunteers, the coaches, the parents of not just these athletes, but for all of the 15,000 wrestlers in the California USAWrestling family, that you provide a workout room, a ride to events and food when they run out of money. This is what we do, no one makes a living doing this, it is the love to provide quality opportunities for young athletes to succeed, which drives these volunteers. I am very proud to be the state chairman of over 2000 coaches, 300 officials and countless other who help our wrestlers enjoy and thrive in the great sport of wrestling.

We have exciting programming set up for all who want to participate from state championships, to over 200 local events, and 450 clubs. Great news is coming out of the town of Woodlake on the home for California USAWrestling-stay tuned it will be very exciting.

As always if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact either myself of Rob Valerio at the emails listed below and we will get back to you as quick as we can. 18 Local Association:Find one near you! Have a great year and see you on the mat.

OlympicAge Group Competition Programprovidestraining, clinics and competitive opportunities for beginner to elite wrestlers from ages 5 to 18.

The OlympicAge Group Competition Program isorganized into 10 different levelsof training or competition. Eachlevel has multiple age groups and opportunities for participation and competition. Competition is carried out at the local, state, regional and national levelsthrough California USA Wrestling, & USAWrestling sanctioned level events. For Levels IX and X, the season culminates at the Cadet/Junior Boys & Cadet/Junior Girls National Championships held in Julyof each year.

The OlympicAge Group Competition Program is organized into the following three areas: A. Basic SkillsAchievement Program (BSAP) The Basic SkillsAchievement Program (BSAP) covers Levels I, II and III and is designed to help advance a wrestlers from the day he, or she enters the room, or until he, or she is prepared to participate in theAge Group Competition Program and the National Team Program. It was conceived as the entry-level of an overall skill and competitive development system. The programincludes manyof the skills fromthe entry-level, preparing the wrestler for theAge Group Competition Program.

B.Age Group Competition Program The Junior OlympicAge Group CompetitionProgram consists of sevenlevels. The first three levels, IV through VI, continue the BSAP’s progressions from simple to more complex skills. The intermediate level, VII, encourages the transition fromcompulsoryto optional skills at an appropriate age. These skills provide logical bridges between the lower and higher level skills. The advanced levels, VIII, IX and X require the wrestler to fulfill most FIG requirements. (A FIG is a cluster of high skills)

C. Junior National Team Program The Junior National Team Programprovides for the identification and selection of our elite junior athletes. The programincludes the Junior Development Teamselected through the Future OlympicAge Group Program, the Junior National Teamand the Junior Elite Team. The programobjectives are to: 1. Simplifythe competitive path for our junior athletes and elevate the importance of successful competition; 2. Create aneducational evaluation systemthat emphasizes international competitiveness; 3. Involve the personal coaches in overall programplanning and organizationas well as individualized athlete planning and; 4. Educate the coaching communityin the basic principles of coachingand the development ofthe elite athlete.

Note:Athletes MUST attend each level clinic in there arena, and pass each level in order to move on.

Why should kids attend?:As kids attend, and achieve each level, the opportunity for scholarship goes up.

Golden Summer

St. John Bosco’s Aaron Pico (132) repeated as Cadet National Greco-Roman Champion. Pico, was dominant throughout the competition, including in the finals at 132 pounds where he registered a shutout victory over Nevada’s Brady O’Keefe, 6-0, 6-0. He showed a varietyof high-level skills in the finals, scoring with takedowns, turns, and throws to overwhelm O’Keefe. Pico, who will be a freshman at St. John Bosco High School, did not give up a point in nine matches, and six of his wins came by technical fall. He was named Outstanding Wrestler in the Cadet National Greco-Roman competition. Lemoore wrestler Isaiah Martinez’salreadyimpres- sive haul for 2012. The two-time Sentinel Wrestler of the Year competed this past Summer at Junior National Championships, winninga national title in the 160 pound junior freestyle division in Fargo, N.D.

Isaiah defeated Nick Wanzek, from Minnesota, 4- 3, 0-6, 3-2 in the finals of the championship final. Two years ago, Martinez won a national title at the same tournament in the Cadet Greco-Roman division at 135s.This year, he finished eighth in that style’sjunior division,earningAll-Americanhonors at 160s.

Earlier in the year, Martinez won his second straight California Interscholastic Federation state title before winninga national title atFloNationalsinPhiladelphia. Photo’s By John Sachs California had the most individual cadet freestyle champions with three. All three wrestle for St. John Bosco. California's three champions:AnthonyValenica, Zahid Valencia, andAaron Pico In addition to Triple Crown winner Pico, California's other champions were the Valencia brothers, Zahid (113) andAnthony (138). The two brothers made California wrestling history earlier this year as the onlytwo freshman brothers ever to win a state championship in the same year.

Zahid Valencia's title on Friday at 113 pounds came over New Jersey's Charles Tucker. Valenica needed onlytwo points in two periods, winning 1-0, 1-0. He scored with lightning- fast attacks and shut down Tucker's offense. Valenica finished this past season ranked No. 1 nationally at 106 pounds.

Anthony Valenica came back from a loss in pool competition to win the title at 138 pounds. His victoryin the finals came over one of the nation's top sophomores, Pat Duggan of Penn- sylvania. Valencia outscored Duggan 6-1 in his two-period victory. California sends 5 girls, and 2 Coach’s to FILA Cadet Worlds Cadence Lee- National Champion in Baku, Azerbaijan, August 21-26

Cadence Lee 108-pound girls’ Cadet title at the 2012 National Freestyle Championships in Fargo, N.D this summer. Lee went 5-0, pinning three opponents in the first period in 49 seconds, 18 seconds and 1:55 to claim the title.

She opened with a decision, pinned two opponents, won her third match by decision (losing her first and only period in the five matches) and then won the crown. Lee also trained at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., followed by participation in the Cadet World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan from Aug. 18-25 along with the Doi Sisters

Marina Doi wins World gold medal in the 38kg/83 pound Regina and Marina Doi represented the U.S. in the Pan American games, in Venezuela .

Then in August they l headed to the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado for two weeks to prepare for the U.S. team in the Cadet World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan. The girl’s had planned on accompanying the California Cadet team to the Junior & Cadet National Tournament in Fargo, N.D.

But there was one glitch: In order for the sisters to compete in the 38 kilometers (84 pounds) and 40 kilometers (88 pounds) in Azerbaijan, someone from the U.S. had to compete in those weight classes at the Pan Am Games.

When USA Wrestling could not find anyone to do that, the Dois said, they were enlisted. “We’re sad,” Regina said. “We wanted to go to Fargo more than Venezuela.”Marina said Fargo would be “more fun” because they would be with their California teammates. Instead, they went Venezuela without their parents, but Dad Gene and Mom Cee did join their daughters in Baku, Azerbaijan in August.

(To raise extra income to fund their trip, Gene Doi, a professional musician and public school music teacher, played a few California gigs as a saxophone player with the Temptations.) Traveling around the world is becoming a Doi summer tradition. Last summer the family was together in Budapest, Hungary as the girls competed in the Worlds there.

“Two different continents in one summer,” Cee Doi marveled at her daughter’s summer plans. “It’s amazing to be this young and have the chance to go to these places.”So much has happened since last summer’s jet travel, including last winter when Marina won a state championship at 98 pounds in the CIF Girls Wrestling Championships in Lemoore.

Regina, who won a state title in 2011, was unable to repeat when she was felled by a heart “episode” during her first match. She has on several occasions experienced supraventricular tachycardia, commonly known as SVT, which causes her heart to race unexpectedly. She is controlling it with medication (a beta blocker), and she said doctors have told her physical exertion would be beneficial for her heart.During the hectic negotiations to change travel plans, the Doi telephone has been ringing off the hook with calls from coaches and USA Wrestling officials — including U.S. Olympics team coach Terry Steiner.

“He has to maintain good relationships, “ Cee Doi said. “He’s banking on these girls for Brazil.”

That would be the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, where the Dois should be prime contenders for the U.S. team. If they grow, that is. Currently they are 4-foot-8 and weigh in at 85 pounds (Marina) and 92 pounds (Regina). The lightest weight for Olympic women’s wrestling is 105.The change in travel plans also means a change in diet for the twins. They said they were trying to “bulk up” for Fargo, where they would be competing heavier than their weight. Now they’ll have to Marina Doi lose weight for the Pan Am Games.“No more eating when I’m bored,” Marina said .Marina won the gold medal in the 38kg/83 pound division at the world championships. Last year she won the silver medal in the 40kg/88 pound division. World Champ . Membership Information Athlete Membership: $35 online plus fees -$45 on site of any local event.
